Rabi-oscillation spectroscopy of the hyperfine structure of muonium atoms

As a method to determine the resonance frequency, Rabi-oscillation spectroscopy has been developed. In contrast to conventional spectroscopy which draws the resonance curve, Rabi-oscillation spectroscopy fits the time evolution of the Rabi oscillation. By selecting the optimized frequency, it is shown that the precision is twice as good as conventional spectroscopy with a frequency sweep. Furthermore, the data under different conditions can be treated in a unified manner, allowing more efficient measurements for systems consisting of a limited number of short-lived particles produced by accelerators such as muons. We have developed a fitting function that takes into account the spatial distribution of muonium and the spatial distribution of the microwave intensity to apply this method to ground-state muonium hyperfine structure measurements at zero field. It was applied to the actual measurement data, and the resonance frequencies were determined under various conditions. The result of our analysis gives $$nu_{rm HFS}$$ = 4 463 301.61 $$pm$$ 0.71 kHz.

The two-dimensional quadratic lattice magnet, bis(glycolato)cobalt(II) ([Co(HOCH$$_{2}$$CO$$_{2}$$)$$_{2}$$]), showed anti-ferromagnetic ordering at 15.0 K and an abrupt increase in magnetisation at H = 22 600 Oe and 2 K, thereby acting as a metamagnet. Neutron diffraction studies suggested that the magnetic moment vectors of the Co(II) ions had an amplitude of 3.59 mB and were not aligned in a fully antiparallel fashion to those of their neighbours, which caused canting between the magnetic moment vectors in the sheet. The canting angle was determined to be 7.1deg. Canting induced net magnetisation in the sheet, but this magnetisation was cancelled between sheets. The magnetisations in the sheets were oriented parallel to the magnetic field at the critical magnetic field.

2017年6月30日22時21分から26分(世界時)にかけて、昭和基地にあるPANSYレーダーによってオーロラ爆発時の中間圏における過渡電離が観測された。通常、中間圏における過渡電離は100keV以上の高エネルギー電子が中間圏まで到達することにより引き起こされるが、同時間帯においてあらせ衛星が観測した100keV以上の電子フラックスは有意な上昇を示していなかった。このことから、本イベントは、10keV以下の低エネルギー電子が大量に熱圏に降り注ぐことにより発生したX線による電離であるとの仮説を立てた。この仮説の妥当性を検証するため、粒子・重イオン挙動解析コードPHITSを用いて様々なエネルギースペクトルを持つ電子が大気上空に進入した場合の電離分布を計算した。その結果、10keV以下の電子でも中間圏において十分な電離を引き起こすことが可能であることが分かり、仮説の妥当性が証明された。

Unique helical magnetic order and field-induced phase in trillium lattice antiferromagnet EuPtSi

Magnetic transitions in chiral antiferromagnet EuPtSi were investigated by means of single crystal neutron diffraction. In the ground state, magnetic peaks emerge at positions represented by $$q_{1}$$=$$(0.2, 0.3, 0)$$. Upon heating, an additional magnetic peak splitting around 2.5 K was uncovered, indicating a presence of a first-order transition with $$q^*_{1}$$=$$(0.2, 0.3, {delta})$$. An half-polarized neutron scattering for polarization parallel to Q reveled that polarization antiparallel to Q has stronger intensity in both magnetic phases. This feature clarifies single chiral character of helical structure with moments normal to the ordering vector in both ordered states. Under vertical magnetic field along [1,1,1] in the $$A$$ phase, magnetic peaks form hexagonal patterns in the equatorial scattering plane around nuclear. An ordering vector $$q_{A}$$ of the $$A$$-phase has the similar size in the periodicity to $$q_{1}$$, and could be a hallmark of a formation of skyrmion lattice in EuPtSi.

MuSEUM is an international collaboration aiming at a new precise measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure at J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex). Utilizing its intense pulsed muon beam, we expect a ten-fold improvement for both measurements at high magnetic field and zero magnetic field. We have developed a sophisticated monitoring system, including a beam profile monitor to measure the 3D distribution of muonium atoms to suppress the systematic uncertainty.

The $$^{8}$$Li($$alpha$$,n)$$^{11}$$B reaction is regarded as the key reaction in the inhomogeneous big bang and in type-II supernova nucleosynthesis. Recently, the importance of this reaction to solving the $$^{7}$$Li problem, i.e., the inconsistency between the predicted and the observed primordial $$^{7}$$Li abundances, has also been noted. The most recent cross-section data published by our collaboration group in 2006 [H. Ishiyama et al., Phys. Lett. B 640, 82 (2006)] cover the 0.7- to 2.6-MeV energy region in the center-of-mass system. Here, we present additional data spanning the 0.45- to 1.80-MeV energy region. Thus, the predominant energy region for the big bang nucleosynthesis, corresponding to T$$_{9}$$ = 1 (where T$$_{9}$$ is a temperature unit equivalent to 109 K), is almost completely spanned by the previous [H. Ishiyama et al., Phys. Lett. B 640, 82 (2006)] and present results together.

At the Muon Science Facility (MUSE) of J-PARC (Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex), the MuSEUM collaboration is planning new measurements of the ground state hyperfine structure (HFS) of muonium both at zero field and at high magnetic field. The previous measurements were performed both at LAMPF (Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility) with experimental uncertainties mostly dominated by statistical errors. The new high intensity muon beam that will soon be available at MUSE H-Line will provide an opportunity to improve the precision of these measurements by one order of magnitude. An overview of the different aspects of these new muonium HFS measurements, the current status of the preparation, and the results of a first commissioning test experiment at zero field are presented.

Radiation response of silicon carbide metal-oxide-semiconductor transistors in high dose region

In this study, we report the effects of $$gamma$$-ray irradiation and subsequent annealing on the electrical characteristics of vertical structure power 4H Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) with the blocking voltage of 1200 V. The MOSFETs were irradiated with $$gamma$$-rays up to 1.2 MGy in a N$$_{2}$$ atmosphere at room temperature (RT). During the irradiation, no bias was applied to each electrode of the MOSFETs. After the irradiation, the MOSFETs were kept at RT for 240 h to investigate the stability of their degraded characteristics. Then, the irradiated MOSFETs were annealed up to 360 $$^{circ}$$C in the atmosphere. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the MOSFETs were measured at RT. By 1.2 MGy irradiation, the shift of threshold voltage (V$$_{T}$$) for the MOSFETs was -3.39 V. After RT preservation for 240 h, MOSFETs showed no significant recovery in V$$_{T}$$. By annealing up to 360 $$^{circ}$$C, the MOSFETs showed remarkable recovery, and the values of V$$_{T}$$ become 91 % of the initial values. Those results indicate that the degraded characteristics of SiC MOSFETs can be recovered by thermal annealing at 360 $$^{circ}$$C.

In order to develop semiconductor devices with MGy radiation resistivity, we are developing power metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect-transistors (MOSFETs) based on silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors. The $$gamma$$-ray irradiation responses of power SiC-MOSFETs were studied under various irradiation temperatures and humidity with various gate-bias conditions. Making comparisons between these responses, the optimum device operating condition and a better device structure were derived and MGy resistivity was achieved. Besides, $$gamma$$-ray irradiation tests for a motor-driver circuits consisting of SiC-MOSFETs were carried out, and as a result, their continuous operation up to 2 MGy was confirmed.

Effect of humidity and temperature on the radiation response of SiC MOSFETs

Influence of $$gamma$$-ray irradiation under high temperature and high humidity circumstance on the electrical characteristics of Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) was investigated. The drain current (I$$_{D}$$)-gate voltage (V$$_{G}$$) curves shifted to the negative voltage side and no significant further shift was observed with increasing the dose above 10 kGy. Suppression of the negative shift of threshold voltage (V$$_{th}$$) means that positive charges generated by irradiation were thermally annealed by elevated temperature during irradiation. The leakage current slightly increased at 5 and 10 kGy, however, those values recovered to be approximately the initial value above 40 kGy. Humidity circumstance attributed to remarkable suppression of the leakage current in comparison with dry circumstance.

立方晶ペロブスカイトPbCrO$$_{3}$$が常温常圧において、鉛の価数に関する電荷ガラス状態であり、その結果、鉛の位置にランダムネスのある構造をとっていることを明らかにした。鉛の価数は2価と4価に価数分離しており、鉛の位置は、A-site中心からのシフトが3倍周期の縦波型変調を持つ2つの副格子で表される短距離秩序を持つことを明らかにした。加圧すると鉛-クロム間の電荷移動が生じ、それにより電荷ガラスが解消され、絶縁体-金属相転移が起こることも明らかにした。この圧力誘起の電荷ガラス融解が、PbCrO$$_{3}$$で知られていた大きな体積収縮を伴った立方晶-立方晶の同型構造相転移の起源であることが分かった。

Influence of electron doping on magnetic order in CeRu$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$

The effect of electron doping by the substitution of Rh for Ru on unconventional magnetic order in CeRu$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$ was investigated via neutron powder diffraction. In Ce(Ru$$_{1-x}$$Rh$$_x$$)$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$ with $$x$$ = 0.05, 0.12, 0.2, reorientation of the ordered moment from the $$c$$- to the $$a$$-axis takes place in all samples, while the ordering vector $$q$$ = (0 1 0) remains unchanged within this concentration range. The moment reorientation is accompanied by an enhancement in its size by a factor of 2.4, from $${mu}$$=0.43 $${mu}_B$$ at $$x$$ = 0 to $${mu}$$=1.06, 1.04, and 1.02 $${mu}_B$$ for $$x$$ = 0.05, 0.12 and 0.2, respectively. The continuous decrease in N$'e$el temperature $$T_0$$($$T_N$$), despite an abrupt increase in $${mu}$$, underlines the strong anisotropy in the exchange interaction in CeRu$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$, and the fact that this anisotropy is easily suppressed by electron doping.

Online full two-dimensional imaging of pulsed muon beams at J-PARC MUSE using a gated image intensifier

A new muon beam profile monitor (MBPM) was developed to diagnose pulsed muon beams in J-PARC MUSE, mainly composed of a scintillation screen, a gated image intensifier (II), and a cooled CCD camera. The MBPM was designed to be compact so that it could be inserted into the bore of the $$mu$$SR spectrometer in the D1 area and used concurrently. The spatial resolution of the MBPM was evaluated to be in the range from one to two line-pair/mm, depending on II gain. Such high-resolution muon beam profiles were obtained online for a positive muon beam with a kinetic energy of $$sim$$ 4 MeV. The contribution from decay positrons was significantly reduced owing to II gating. The linearity of the MBPM was evaluated on the bases of the number of decay positrons monitored by the $$mu$$SR spectrometer. A linear response within five percent deviations was confirmed over more than two orders of magnitude. In addition, 3D imaging capability, use in vacuum, and immunity against moderate magnetic fields were demonstrated.

フェルミ国立加速器施設のNuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector)は、ニュートリノ混合・振動事象を調査するため大強度のニュートリノを生成しており、崩壊領域の末端には加速陽子や二次粒子のビームダンプとしてハドロンアブソーバーが設置されている。ビームダンプの遮蔽性能を評価するため、放射化検出器による反応率測定をアブソーバーの背面で実施した。検出器の誘導放射能は、ゲルマニウム検出器を用いたスペクトル解析により測定した。反応率の2次元分布には2種類のピークが確認され、1つは両側に強いピーク、もう1つは上方に弱いピークであった。これらのピークは、アブソーバーの隙間を通ってきたストリーミングによるものであった。

Shallow donor level associated with hydrogen impurities in undoped BaTiO$$_3$$

The influence of hydrogen impurities on electronic properties of undoped BaTiO$$_3$$ was studied from a microscopic point of view using the muon spin rotation and relaxation technique. Electron localization around an implanted positive muon, by analogy an hydrogen impurity, was observed below $$sim$$80 K. The effective electron binding energy was estimated to be $$sim10^{-2}$$ eV, indicating that the hydrogen-induced defect forms a shallow donor level. At room temperature, the weakly bound electron is excited into a conduction band and behaves as a free carrier, which causes insulation degradation undesirable for capacitor application.

Fitting method for spectrum deduction in high-energy neutron field induced by GeV-protons using experimental reaction-rate data

JASMINと名付けられた共同研究プロジェクトのもとで、フェルミ国立研究所の反陽子ターゲットステーションを遮蔽集合体として使用した遮蔽実験を行っている。実験では、箔放射化法を用いた測定を行い、新たに開発したフィッティング法によって、遮蔽体中の高エネルギー中性子スペクトル(1-100MeV)を決定した。この手法では、中性子スペクトルの形を、簡単な関数で表した。得られた結果を、アンフォールディング法及び理論計算から導出した中性子スペクトルと比較することにより、この手法の妥当性を確認した。最後に、仮定したスペクトル関数中のフィッティング変数が放射化法で得られた反応率に対して、簡単な関係を持つことを示した。これにより、複雑な計算を行わずに、反応率データから簡単に高エネルギー中性子スペクトルを導出できることがわかった。

重イオン輸送計算コードは、宇宙船の遮へい効果を評価するために不可欠なツールである。そこで、われわれは、200GeVまでの粒子・重イオンの3次元空間における挙動を模擬できるシミュレーションコードPHITSを開発している。このPHITSを用いて、国際宇宙ステーション・ロシアサービスモジュール内における放射線環境を評価した。その結果、宇宙飛行士の寝室外壁に設置した水タオルは、線量を効果的に減衰することが明らかとなった。発表では、この評価結果も含め、PHITSの宇宙開発への適用例を紹介する。

遮蔽設計において、中性子のスペクトル形状及びその強度を推定することは大変重要である。フェルミ国立加速器研究所の反陽子生成ターゲットステーションで得られた遮蔽実験データから、フィッティング及びアンフォールディング法の2つの方法で高エネルギー中性子のスペクトル形状の推定を行った。フィッティング法では、中性子スペクトルが容易に得られ、かつ遮蔽材料の核データと比較しても妥当であった。アンフォールディング法で得られたスペクトル形状は、核データとは整合のとれない結果となった。2つの方法で推定した中性子スペクトルの形状に対して、PHITSコードによる計算結果で検証を行った。

Detailed characterization of U-Co binary compounds

For U-Co binary systems, at least 6 stable phases were reported previously. These systems show a variety of physical properties. U$$_6$$Co and UCo exhibit superconductivity. Furthermore, the possible crystal structural model without inversion symmetry was proposed by analyses of X-ray powder diffractions. Recently, single crystals of UCo are succeeded to grow by the Czochralski pulling method. For comparison, polycrystalline sample was also prepared by arc melting. Below 2 K, the both samples showed zero resistivity as reported earlier. We also checked the composition of these crystals by electron probe micro analyzer (EPMA) and took the pictures of scanning SEM image. We confirmed the existence of a small amount of uranium-rich 2nd phase in these crystals. Considering these results, it can be suggested that the uranium-rich 2nd phase corresponds to U$$_6$$Co.

Single crystal growth and physical properties of ternary uranium compounds U$${M_2}$$Al$$_{10}$$ ($$M$$=Fe, Ru and Os)

We investigated the ternary uranium compounds U$${M_2}$$Al$$_{10}$$ ($$M$$ = Fe, Ru and Os) with the orthorhombic YbFe$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$-type crystal structure. URu$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$ and UOs$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$ are new compounds grown for the first time. These compounds show no ordering despite the Curie-Weiss behavior at high temperatures.
