The accident of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc. occurred due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, Sanriku offshore earthquake, of 9.0 magnitude and the accompanying tsunami. As a result, large amount of radioactive materials was released into the environment. Under these circumstances, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting "Long-term Assessment of Transport of Radioactive Contaminants in the Environment of Fukushima" concerning radioactive materials released in environment, especially migration behavior of radioactive cesium since November 2012. This report is a summary of the research results that have been obtained in environmental dynamics research conducted by JAEA in Fukushima Prefecture.

We have revealed the fundamental mechanism of specific Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption into Prussian blue (PB) in order to develop high-performance PB-based Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorbents in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident. We compared two types of PB nanoparticles with formulae of Fe$$^{III}$$$$_{4}$$[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]3$$cdot$$xH$$_{2}$$O (x = 10-15) (PB-1) and (NH$$_{4}$$)0.70Fe$$^{III}$$1.10[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]$$cdot$$1.7H$$_{2}$$O (PB-2) with respect to the Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption ability. The synthesised PB-1, by a common stoichiometric aqueous reaction between 4Fe$$^{3+}$$ and 3[Fe$$^{II}$$(CN)$$_{6}$$]$$^{4-}$$, showed much more efficient Cs$$^{+}$$ adsorption ability than did the commercially available PB-2.

Positron emitter, $$^{64}$$Cu has been used in medical applications with positron emission tomography (PET). We have developed a novel method in $$^{64}$$Cu production to obtain $$^{64}$$Cu-labelled antibodies as a PET reagent. On the other hand, $$^{64}$$Cu can be used for in vivo imaging of copper in a living plant by positron emitting tracer imaging system (PETIS). Production of $$^{64}$$Cu was carried out via the $$^{64}$$Ni(p,n)$$^{64}$$Cu nuclear reaction. The produced $$^{64}$$Cu (330 MBq) was purified by an ion-exchange method from the irradiated $$^{64}$$NiO target. The $$^{64}$$Cu was obtained with high yield (89%) and high radionuclidic-purity $$^{64}$$Cu ($$>$$ 99%). The $$^{64}$$NiO was recovered in good yield ($$>$$ 99%). The $$^{64}$$Cu was added to a plant (soybean) for an imaging experiment and the movement of $$^{64}$$Cu was visualized by the PETIS. This result shows that $$^{64}$$Cu can be applied as a useful tracer for not only medical applications and also plant physiological studies.

$$^{137}$$Cs released from the TEPCO's Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident has a long half-life of about 30 years, it is necessary to monitor the distribution and its radioecological impact over the long term. Mountainous forests, which accounts for about 70% of Fukushima prefecture, tend to be a sink of radiocesium contamination rather than a source for the contamination of other ecosystems. An understanding of the environmental dynamics of radiocesium in the forest floor of various conditions is important issue, while progressing to the resident return. In this paper, we report on the results of the field investigation into the $$^{137}$$Cs distribution and the $$^{137}$$Cs outflow in the mountainous forest of Fukushima, where the wildfire broke out in the spring of 2017.
