Research on hydrogen safety technology utilizing the automotive catalyst

Safety management technology of hydrogen gas is extremely important not only for nuclear power generation but also for future society. A brand-new passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) system utilizing the monolithic "intelligent catalyst" has been studied for the long-term storage of high-concentration radioactive materials related to the decommissioning of nuclear reactors. The monolith-type automotive catalyst showed high hydrogen conversion activity from a room temperature in a large scale reactor of REKO-4. It became clear that natural convection by reaction is greatly improved by roughening the cell density of the monolith catalyst especially under static environmental conditions such as in a storage container. Taking advantage of this superior catalytic property, we aim to complete the safety technology for storage containers at an early stage and advance the development of highly active catalyst from further low temperature.


A Consideration on the use of shear waves to improve the sensitivity of an optical ultrasonic sensor for under-sodium viewers

The present work is intended to investigate shear waves induced on stainless steel diaphragms by the incidence of ultrasonic waves, with the main emphasis on the understanding of the generation mechanism of the resultant second wave, in order to explore the possible use of the shear waves for improvement of the sensitivity of an optical ultrasonic sensor used for under-sodium viewers. The response of the diaphragms exposed to ultrasonic waves with different pressure profiles is measured by a heterodyne interferometer to examine the location where the shear waves are excited. The generation of the second wave is interpreted on the basis of interference of these shear waves. The effectiveness of the use of the shear waves is demonstrated by an improved sensitivity of 0.26 nm/kPa for a 3-mm-diameter and 5-$$mu$$m-thick diaphragm. This sensitivity is approximately 7 times as high as the sensitivity achieved with the first wave, which is the displacement of the diaphragm caused by directly incident ultrasonic waves.


Prediction method of improved residual stress distribution by shot peening using large scale analysis method

In this work, an analysis system that can analyze the modification of the residual stress distribution by peening is proposed based on IEFEM. In the proposed analysis system, IEFEM is extended to consider the dynamic effect to analyze the dynamic phenomenon with an impulsive load. The impulsive load due to the collision of shots is modeled as an equivalent load model. The equivalent load model is integrated with IEFEM considering the dynamic effect to calculate spatially and temporally random load in dynamic analyses. Using the proposed analysis system, the residual stress distribution modification by shot peening in a multi-pass welded pipe joint is predicted. The residual stress distributions obtained by the analysis are compared with those measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the effect of the number of shot collisions on the change in residual stress distribution is discussed.

The adherence of sodium on the external surface of steam generator tubes (SGs) of Fast Breeder Reactors (FBR) adds an additional level of complexity in the in-service inspection (ISI) of SGs using eddy current testing (ECT). The paper focusses on research and development (R&D) of novel multi-frequency (MF) algorithms, based on ECT signals, special developed and tuned to enhance the signal from defects located on external SG tube surface and to suppress electromagnetic noise from the conductive sodium and SG support plates. The application of the MF algorithm is investigated using both three-dimensional finite element (FEM) simulations and experimental measurements from SG tubes soaked and then drained of sodium, in a sodium tank mock-up.

Effects of metallic diaphragms on sensitivity characteristics of an optical ultrasonic sensor and reduction of interrogation time based on wavelength division multiplexing for under-sodium visual inspection

We have experimentally examined the effects of the metallic diaphragms on the sensitivity characteristics of an optical ultrasonic sensor and investigated the multiplexed interrogation of the diaphragms based on WDM technique. The experimental results show that the sensitivity can be increased by use of thinner and lighter diaphragms. It has also been found that by taking advantage of the interference of the lamb waves propagating through the diaphragm, the sensitivity can be further enhanced by a factor of approximately 5 to 6 with decreasing diameter. The multiplexed interrogation based on WDM technique has been demonstrated in the case of two wavelengths. From this experimental demonstration, we consider that the interrogation time can be significantly reduced by increasing the number of multiplexed wavelengths.
