高速炉燃料用SUS316相当鋼の高温強度及び照射特性評価

SUS316相当鋼を用いた高速炉燃料設計の高信頼性化に向けて、SUS316相当鋼被覆管及びラッパ管の高温強度及び照射データを材料学的及び統計学的な観点で評価・解析することで、高温強度及び高照射量までの照射特性に係る設計用強度式を導出した。異常な過渡変化の上限温度を超える900$$^{circ}$$CまでのSUS316相当鋼被覆管及びラッパ管(非照射材)の高温引張試験データ及び高温クリープ試験データを拡充し、0.2%耐力、引張強さ、クリープ破断強度の最適近似式と下限式並びに熱クリープひずみの最適近似式と上下限式を導出した。また、高速実験炉「常陽」、仏国・高速原型炉Phenix及び米国・FFTFで高照射量まで中性子照射したSUS316相当鋼被覆管及びラッパ管の照射後引張試験データ及びSUS316相当鋼被覆管の炉内クリープ破断試験データを解析することで、炉内Na中照射による引張強度及びクリープ強度の低下を表す強度補正係数を導出した。導出した式を実測値と比較することで、その妥当性を確認した。

Martensitic transformation-governed Luders deformation enables large ductility and late-stage strain hardening in ultrafine-grained austenitic stainless steel at low temperatures

Using a hybrid method of in situ neutron diffraction and digital image correlation, we found that ultrafine-grained 304 stainless steel exhibits Luders deformation after yielding, in which the deformation behavior changes from a cooperation mechanism involving dislocation slip and martensitic transformation to one primarily governed by martensitic transformation, as the temperature decreases from 295 K to 77 K. Such martensitic transformation-governed Luders deformation delays the activation of plastic deformation in both the austenite parent and martensite product, resulting in delayed strain hardening. This preserves the strain-hardening capability for the later stage of deformation, thereby maintaining a remarkable elongation of 29% while achieving a high tensile strength of 1.87 GPa at 77 K.

酸化物分散強化型鋼鋼のナノメートルサイズの酸化物粒子はクリープ強度の向上に対して重要な役割を持つ。以前の研究では旧粉末境界という焼結前に機械的合金粉末の表面であった組織因子に注目した。その結果、より小さなサイズの粉末で製作され微細な旧粉末境界を持つ酸化物分散強化型鋼は、より大きなサイズの粉末で製作され粗大な旧粉末境界を持つ酸化物分散強化型鋼よりも、短いクリープ寿命を示すことを確かめた。これより、機械的合金粉末の大きさがクリープ強度特性に影響を及ぼすことを明らかとなった。本研究では非球状である機械的合金粉末の形状がクリープ強度特性に及ぼす影響に注目した。このような形状がクリープ強度特性に異方性を生じさせる可能性が考えられたからである。ここでは異なった切り出し方位を持つ試験片に対してスモールパンチクリープ試験を実施することで異方性に注目した。これより、クリープ寿命は試験片の切り出し方位によって変化することを確かめて、形状がクリープ強度特性に及ぼす影響を明らかとした。

Thermal stability of retained austenite with heterogeneous composition and size in austempered Fe-2Mn-1.5Si-0.4C alloy

The mechanical properties of TRIP steels depend on heterogeneities of chemical composition and grain size in the retained $$gamma$$ structure, although these heterogeneities have not been characterized in detail. Therefore, in this study, we quantitatively investigate the inhomogeneous carbon concentration and grain size distribution, and its effects on the thermal stability of the retained $$gamma$$ in Fe-2Mn-1.5Si-0.4C (mass%) TRIP steel using FE-EPMA, EBSD, M$"o$ssbauer spectroscopy, and in-situ neutron diffraction during bainitic transformation at 673 K. In-situ neutron diffraction experiments detects high-carbon $$gamma$$ evolving during bainite transformation, in addition to the original $$gamma$$, and the time variation of the volume fraction of highcarbon $$gamma$$ agrees well with the fraction of $$gamma$$ retained at room temperature. Williamson-Hall analysis based on peak width suggests that heterogeneity of carbon content exists even within the high-carbon $$gamma$$. Compositional analysis using FE-EPMA and three-dimensional atom probe directly revealed that fine filmy $$gamma$$ was highly enriched with carbon compared to larger blocky $$gamma$$, and the carbon content in blocky $$gamma$$ decreases with increasing blocky $$gamma$$ size. DICTRA simulation qualitatively reproduces the size dependency of carbon enrichment into $$gamma$$. It was also found that $$gamma$$ tends to be retained at higher carbon content and smaller $$gamma$$ grain size since the smaller grain size directly improves thermal stability and the smaller $$gamma$$ size further contributes to the thermal stability via enhanced carbon enrichment.

Effects of loading direction on the anisotropic tensile properties of duplex stainless steels based on phase strains obtained by in situ neutron diffraction experiments

This study investigated the anisotropy of the tensile properties in a duplex stainless steel of 24Cr-5Ni-0.18N based on in situ neutron diffraction experiments. The 24Cr-5Ni-0.18N steel showed a better balance of tensile strength (TS) and uniform elongation (U.El) compared with 329J4L and 329J1 steels. The Lankford value ($$r$$-value) of the 24Cr-5Ni-0.18N steel was comparable to other duplex stainless steels while showing a larger TS. Regarding the anisotropy of the mechanical properties, the results for a test specimen oriented at 45$$^{circ}$$ showed a low yield strength (YS) and TS, but a better U.El and $$r$$-value. The neutron diffraction results are discussed to explain the mechanical properties.

Thinning behavior of solid boron carbide immersed in molten stainless steel for core disruptive accident of sodium-cooled fast reactor

Boron carbide (B$$_4$$C)- stainless steel (SS) eutectic reaction behavior is one of the most important issues in the core disruptive accidents (CDAs) of sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs). In this study, the immersion experiments using B$$_4$$C pellets with molten SS were conducted to evaluate the CDA sequences such as contact event of solid B$$_4$$C with degraded core materials including SS at very high temperature. The immersion experiment aims at understanding the kinetic behavior of solid B$$_4$$C-liquid SS reaction based on the reduced thickness of B$$_4$$C pellet after the experiment in the temperature ranges from 1763 to 1943 K, which is higher than the temperature of solid B$$_4$$C-solid SS reaction. Based on the kinetic consideration of the reaction rate constants for solid B$$_4$$C-liquid SS reaction, it was found that similar temperature dependency was identified between solid B$$_4$$C-liquid SS and solid B$$_4$$C-solid SS. Besides, the reaction rate constants of solid B$$_4$$C-liquid SS were smaller than those of solid B$$_4$$C-solid SS extrapolated in higher temperature region by two or more orders of magnitude due to two different evaluation method for B$$_4$$C side/SS side. It was confirmed that this difference was reasonable through the consideration of previous reaction tests in solid-solid contact for B$$_4$$C side/SS side.

Proposal of negative stress ratio R for fatigue crack growth rates of austenitic stainless steels in air for ASME Code Section XI based on trend in experimental data

Fatigue crack growth rates da/dN for stainless steels in air environment are provided by the ASME Code Section XI. The fatigue crack growth rates are given by da/dN = C$$_{F}$$($$Delta$$K)$$^{n}$$, where C$$_{F}$$ is the fatigue crack growth rate coefficient, n is the fatigue crack growth rate exponent and $$Delta$$K is the stress intensity factor range. The coefficient C$$_{F}$$ contains a temperature parameter S$$_{T}$$, and a scaling parameter, S$$_{R}$$, which is a function of the stress ratio R. When the stress ratio R is positive from 0 to 1, the parameter S$$_{R}$$ increases with increasing the ratio R, and da/dN increases with increasing stress ratio R. When R is less than 0, the parameter is given by S$$_{R}$$ = 1.0. Accordingly, fatigue crack growth rates under negative stress ratio are always constant, independent of stress ratios. This means that a cyclic stress state with a minimum that is compressive is considered to cause the same degree of crack growth as one with the same range but a zero minimum. However, from the results of literature survey, experimental data reveal that the fatigue crack growth rates decrease with decreasing R ratios below zero, i.e. negative stress ratios. The objective of this paper is to assess fatigue crack growth rates under such negative stress ratios for stainless steels in air environment. An equation determined from trends in experimental data is proposed for negative R ratios for calculating the parameter S$$_{R}$$ for the ASME Code Section XI, Appendix Y, based on the literature surveyed in this study.

Effects of welding and constraint conditions on the welding residual stress and hardness of Type 316 stainless steel pipe

Flaws due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) were recently detected in welded joints of austenitic stainless steel piping lines in pressurized water reactors. Welding-induced high hardness and tensile residual stress are known as one of the main factors affecting SCC. In this work, thermal-elastic-plastic coupled three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed to investigate the distributions of welding residual stress and hardness in butt-welded joints of Type 316 stainless steel. Different heat inputs were applied to the pipe welds, including normal heat input, high heat input and very high heat input. Two different constraint conditions were considered for the welded joints, i.e., both ends free or clamped, the latter indicating that the welded joint is constrained by the surrounding piping system. Simulation results were compared with experimental data such as welding thermal cycle, axial shrinkage and residual stress for validation. The effects of heat input and constraint condition on the welding residual stress and hardness at different sections of the welded joints including the weld start/end location were discussed in detail.

Microscopic insights of the extraordinary work-hardening due to phase transformation

We report an in situ neutron diffraction study of 316 L that reveals an extraordinary work-hardening rate (WHR) of $$sim$$7 GPa at 15 K. Detailed analyses show that the major contribution to the excellent strength and ductility comes from the transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, introduced by the austenite-to-martensite ($$gamma$$-to-$$alpha$$') phase transition. A dramatic increase in the WHR is observed along with the transformation; the WHR declined when the austenite phase is exhausted. During plastic deformation, the volume-fraction weighted phase stress and stress contribution from the $$alpha$$'-martensite increase significantly. The neutron diffraction data further suggest that the $$gamma$$-to-$$alpha$$' phase transformation was mediated by the $$varepsilon$$-martensite, as evidenced by the concurrent decline of the $$varepsilon$$ phase with the $$gamma$$ phase.

Formulation of high-temperature strength equation of 9Cr-ODS tempered martensitic steels using the Larson-Miller parameter and life-fraction rule for rupture life assessment in steady-state, transient, and accident conditions of fast reactor fuel

This paper discusses the applicability of J.L. Straalsund et al.'s technique for combining the Larson-Miller parameter (LMP) and life-fraction rule to form a single high-temperature strength equation for 9Cr- oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) tempered martensitic steels (TMS). It uses the extensive dataset on creep rupture, tensile, and temperature-transient-to-burst tests of 9Cr-ODS TMS cladding tubes in the $$alpha$$-phase, $$alpha$$/$$gamma$$-duplex, $$gamma$$-phase matrices, which are accumulated by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency so far. The technique is adequately applicable to 9Cr-ODS TMS cladding tubes. A single high-temperature strength equation expressing the mechanical strength in different deformation and rupture modes (creep, tensile, temperature-transient-to-burst) is derived for 9Cr-ODS TMS cladding tubes. This equation can predict the rupture life of the cladding tubes under various stresses and temperatures over time. The applicable range of the high-temperature strength equation is specified in this study and the upper limit temperature for the equation is found to be 1200$$^{circ}$$C. At temperatures higher than 1200$$^{circ}$$C, the coarsening and aggregation of nanosized oxide particles and the $$gamma$$ to $$delta$$ phase transformation are reported in previous studies. The high-temperature strength equation can be well applied to the creep and tensile strength in the $$alpha$$-phase matrix, the creep strength in the $$gamma$$-phase matrix and the temperature-transient-to-burst strength in both phases except for the low equivalent stress (43 MPa) at temperatures exceeding 1050$$^{circ}$$C. The mechanism of the notable consistency between creep and tensile strength in the $$alpha$$-phase matrix is discussed by analyzing the high-temperature deformation data in the light of existing deformation models.

In situ neutron diffraction during tensile deformation was performed for the stainless steels prepared by the additive manufacturing (AM) processes with two strategies: vertically built and horizontally built. The AM steels were further aged without solid solution treatment. As the results, the retained austenite was found to be more stable because the chemical composition became homogeneous by aging, and the onset of deformation induced martensitic transformation was delayed.

核燃料再処理施設における濃縮運転時の溶液組成及び沸騰の変化を考慮して、オーステナイト系ステンレス鋼R-SUS304ULCの腐食量を評価した。オーステナイト系ステンレス鋼R-SUS304ULCは、日本の使用済燃料再処理施設の高放射性廃液濃縮装置の構造材料であり、濃縮運転時に腐食性の高い硝酸溶液を処理する。本研究の結果、カソード反応活性化によるステンレス鋼の腐食速度を加速する要因として、硝酸濃度、酸化性金属イオン濃度、減圧沸騰に着目する必要があることがわかった。

A Fe-0.15C-5Mn-0.5Si-0.05Nb medium Mn steel annealed at 660$$^{circ}$$C and 685$$^{circ}$$C both exhibited inhomogeneous deformation with Luders deformation and extremely high work hardening rates, but with different Luders strain and work hardening behavior. ${it In-situ}$ neutron diffraction measurements during tensile test were performed to investigate changes in the phase stresses and in the contributed stresses to the strength of the constituent phases, and crystal orientation of austenite. The role of each constituent phase in the deformation and the effect of crystallographic orientation on austenite stability were discussed. Deformation induced martensite showed excellent phase stress and contributed to the strength approximately 1000 MPa, which is close to macroscopic tensile strength.

The local plasticity and associated microstructure evolution in Fe-5Mn-0.1C medium-Mn steel (wt.%) were investigated in this study. Specifically, the micro-deformation mechanism during L$"u$ders banding was characterized based on multi-scale electron backscatter diffraction measurements and electron channeling contrast imaging. Similar to other medium-Mn steels, the Fe-5Mn-0.1C steel showed discontinuous macroscopic deformation, preferential plastic deformation in austenite, and deformation-induced martensitic transformation during L$"u$ders deformation. Hexagonal close-packed martensite was also observed as an intermediate phase. Furthermore, an in-situ neutron diffraction experiment revealed that the pre-existing body- centered cubic phase, which was mainly ferrite, was a minor deformation path, although ferrite was the major constituent phase.

We have investigated the dynamic tensile properties of 4, 5, 6-mass%-Mn-containing low carbon steels with multi-phase microstructures containing retained austenite. The five materials used were classified into two groups. The first group of materials, with around 10% of retained austenite, showed normal strain rete dependence of yield strength (YS) and tensile strength (TS) as in conventional high strength steels. The second group of materials, containing 25-36% of retained austenite, exhibited L$"u$ders elongation showed also normal strain rate dependence in YS and flow stress at L$"u$ders deformation, but TS varied in a complex manner. Among the second group, in the 4 Mn steel, TS was nearly constant at strain rates below 1 s$$^{-1}$$ but increased slightly at higher strain rates. In the 5 and 6 Mn steels, TS once decreased up to the strain rate of 1 or 10 s$$^{-1}$$, and then began to increase at higher strain rates. These behaviors were discussed in terms of temperature rise during plastic deformation causing suppression of martensitic transformation, and thermal stability of retained austenite. In the 4 Mn steel with relatively unstable retained austenite, almost all the austenite transforms regardless of strain rate. In the 5 and 6 Mn steels, where the retained austenite is moderately stable, strain induced transformation of austenite continues up to high plastic strain, providing a good balance of strength and ductility. At high strain rate, TS decreases slightly due to temperature rise, but at higher strain rates than 1 s$$^{-1}$$, the strain rate sensitivity of flow stress in ferrite become prominent and the flow stress increases.

${it In situ}$ deformation experiments with cold-rolled and intercritically annealed Fe-5Mn-0.1C steel were carried out at ambient temperature to characterize the deformation heterogeneity during L$"u$ders band propagation. Deformation band formation, which is a precursor phenomenon of L$"u$ders band propagation, occurred even in the macroscopically elastic deformation stage. The deformation bands in the L$"u$ders front grew from both the side edges to the center of the specimen. After macroscopic yielding, the thin deformation bands grew via band branching, thickening, multiple band initiation, and their coalescence, the behavior of which was heterogeneous. Thick deformation bands formed irregularly in front of the region where the thin deformation bands were densified. The thin deformation bands were not further densified when the spacing of the bands was below $$sim$$ 10 $$mu$$m. Instead, the regions between the deformation bands showed a homogeneous plasticity evolution. The growth of the thin deformation bands was discontinuous, which may be due to the presence of ferrite groups in the propagation path of the deformation bands. Based on these observations, a model for discontinuous L$"u$ders band propagation has been proposed.

Synergistic effect of aluminum lactate and sodium molybdate on freshwater corrosion of carbon steel under irradiation

A novel corrosion inhibitor of carbon steel in fresh water using Al lactate was proposed and its corrosion-inhibition mechanism was investigated. 0.75 mM Al lactate and 0.25 mM sodium molybdate were the most inhibitive to the corrosion of carbon steel in 3 mM NaCl. Al$$^{3+}$$ and MoO$$_{4}$$$$^{2-}$$ in solution formed the metal cation layer on carbon steel with few defects, and the layer did not contain Fe. The metal cation layer on carbon steel inhibited both the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction and anodic iron dissolving reaction and thus enhances the corrosion protection of carbon steel in fresh water.

福島第一原子力発電所の事故で発生した燃料デブリは、溶融した核燃料物質と原子炉の構造材等で構成された酸化物が多くを占めているため、環境温度の変化により岩石のように劣化する可能性が高い。燃料デブリは10年以上水冷されているが、季節や昼夜の温度変化の影響を少なからず受けていることから、燃料デブリの経年変化挙動を評価するためには環境温度の変化を考慮することが不可欠である。仮に燃料デブリの劣化が進んでいる場合、微粉化した放射性物質が冷却水中に溶出して取出し作業に影響を及ぼす可能性がある。本研究では、環境温度の繰り返し変化がクラックの発生に与える影響に着目して、燃料デブリの模擬体を用いた加速試験を実施した。その結果、クラックは温度変化を重ねることで増加することを確認し、燃料デブリの簿擬態は熱膨張と収縮による応力により脆化することが判明した。燃料デブリの物理学的な劣化挙動は岩石や鉱物に類似していることが確認され、模擬燃料デブリと環境のモデルでクラックの増加挙動を予測することが可能となった。

Modeling of hardness and welding residual stress in Type 316 stainless steel components for the assessment of stress corrosion cracking

In this work, a framework was proposed on the comprehensive assessment of hardness and welding residual stress in Type 316 austenitic stainless steel welded joints. Firstly, an 8-pass butt-welded joint made of Type 316 stainless steel was fabricated. Finite element analysis of the welded joint was performed to investigate hardness and welding residual stress distributions. The grain growth model was developed for the hardness prediction. The Chaboche combined isotropic-kinematic strain hardening model and time-temperature dependent annealing model were adopted. The relationships between the Vickers hardness and the uniaxial plastic strain as well as grain size were collected from published literatures. The simulation results of the grain size and accumulated equivalent plastic strain were used for the hardness prediction of the welded joint. The predicted hardness was compared with the experimental data of hardness mapping. The distribution of welding residual stress on the outer surface of the welded pipe was measured by using the X-ray diffraction method and strain gauge method, respectively. The predicted welding residual stresses were compared with the measurements. The results obtained showed that the developed numerical approach can predict the hardness and welding residual stress of Type 316 stainless steel welded joints with satisfactory accuracy. The effects of structural constraint and heat input on the hardness and welding residual stress will be investigated as further works, as described in the proposed framework.

放射光X線と中性子を相補的に用いた小口径突合せ溶接配管の実応力解析

Residual stresses in small-bore butt-welded pipe of austenitic stainless steel have never been measured. It is difficult to obtain a detailed residual stress map of the root welded part, because the gauge volume in neutron diffraction is large. The stress evaluation of the welded part by synchrotron X-rays was also difficult due to the dendritic structure. In this study, a double exposure method (DEM) with high-energy synchrotron X-rays was applied to measuring the details of the residual stress of the welded part, and we succeeded in obtaining the detailed axial and radius stress maps of the root welded part of the plate cut from the welded pipe, though the stress map was under the plane stress condition. The hoop stress map of the butt-welded pipe was obtained using the strain scanning method with neutrons under the triaxial stress state. The axial and radius stress maps under triaxial stress state were made up using the complementary use of the synchrotron X-ray and neutron. As a result, the detailed stress maps of the root welded part of the butt-welded pipe were obtained. The obtained map sufficiently explained the initiation and propagation of SCC.
