Times Cited Count:1 Percentile:16.35(Environmental Sciences)Low dose radiation induced "health effects" containing cancer risk for a Japanese radiation worker cohort is epidemiologically evaluated using the personal dose equivalent (Hp(10)). On the other hand, Hp(10) is not recommended for epidemiological evaluation of cancer risks, since the Hp(10) is widely used for radiological protection purposes. In addition, the cancer risk depends on organ doses rather than Hp(10). Thus, we developed a new method for estimating organ doses from Hp(10) of radiation workers. The developed method enables epidemiological analysis against Japanese radiation workers by considering the response characteristics of personal dosimeters, exposure geometry and energy, and body size of radiation workers in Japan. In the future, we will reconstruct organ dose conversion factor and will evaluate the risk of cancer mortality and morbidity using the organ dose in Japan.

We have reviewed the existing flocculation method for decontaminating pool water and established a practical decontamination method by demonstrating the process at several pools in the Fukushima prefecture.

In this study, groundwater flow and particle tracking simulations using hydrogeological models have been carried out in order to evaluate the relationship between understanding of groundwater flow characteristics and the amount of information that is increased by the progress of investigations. The influences of difference of the method for interpretation of hydrogeology have been also evaluated. As a result, uncertainties of the groundwater flow characteristics were decreased by increasing the amount of information. It was also found that the distribution of large-scale discrete features and the heterogeneity of groundwater flow characteristics affect the groundwater flow characteristics. Furthermore, the method to identify the target of further investigation and to make plan for the investigation were proposed.

The site descriptive modeling, which includes modeling of geological characteristics at present and modeling of site evolution, is used for synthesis of investigation results. It is important to evaluate uncertainties in the model, to specify issues regarding the uncertainties, and to prioritize the specified issues, for the planning of site characterization. The aim of this study is to support for the planning of initial surface-based site characterization based on the technical know-how accumulated from the JAEA's Underground Research Laboratory Projects. In this study, comprehensive task flow from pre-existing data acquisition to site characterization planning through the modeling has been specified. Specific task flow and decision-making process to perform the tasks have been specified, and decision points have also been identified.

In this study, groundwater flow simulations on climatic changes suggest the importance to obtain the data for estimation of changes of the recharge rate. Therefore, this study indicates one of estimation methods of the recharge rate in the future. In addition, we surveyed existing information on an evapotranspiration of one of surface hydrological conditions. Relationship between the mean annual temperature and the evapotranspiration suggests that the evapotranspiration is estimated by the temperature. As for the paleo-climate in the study area, central Japan, the temperature of past glacial periods suggests that the information on surface hydraulic conditions of the present northernmost part of Japan is useful for the estimation of recharge rates in glacial periods of the study area.

A hydrogeological conceptual model has been developed based on pressure responses observed at multilevel pressure monitoring zones in seven boreholes and surface tilt data in and around the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory site. Pressure changes caused by some earthquakes, cross-hole hydraulic testing, and shaft excavation activities are considered. Surface tilt has been measured from the half way of the shaft excavation phase. Continuous monitoring with some numerical analysis during the shaft excavation phase show the existence of the flow barrier fault predicted from the surface-based investigation phase and hydraulic parameter around the shafts.

In Phase I of the "Feasibility Study on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle Systems (F/S)", an advanced loop type reactor has been selected as a promising concept of sodium-cooled middle-scale modular reactor, which has a possibility to fulfill the design requirements of the F/S. This report summarizes the results of the design study on the sodium-cooled middle-scale modular reactor performed in JFY2002, which is the second year of Phase 2. The construction cost of the sodium-cooled middle-scale modular reactor, which has been constructed in JFY2002, was almost achieved the economical goal. But its achievability was not sufficient to accept the concept. In order to reduce the construction cost, the plant concept has been re-constructed based on the 50 MWe plant studied in JFY2002. After that, fundamental specifications of main systems and components for the new concept have been set, and critical subjects have been examined and evaluated. In addition, in order to achieve the further cost reduction, the plant with simplified secondary system, the plant with electric magnetic pump in secondary system, and the fuel handling system are examined and evaluated. As a result of this study, the plant concept of the sodium-cooled middle-scale modular reactor has been constructed, which has a prospect to satisfy the economic goal (construction cost: less than 200,000 yens/kWe, etc.) and has a prospect to solve the critical subjects. From now on, reflecting the results of elemental experiments, the preliminary conceptual design of this plant will be preceded toward the selection for narrowingdown candidate concepts at the end of Phase 2.

In Phase 2 of the F/S, it is planed to precede a preliminary conceptual design of a sodium-cooled large-scale reactor based on the design of the advanced loop type reactor. Through the design study, it is intended to construct such a plant concept that can show its attraction and competitiveness as a commercialized reactor. This report summarizes the results of the design study on the sodium-cooled large-scale reactor performed in JFY2002, which is the second year of Phase 2. In the JFY2002 design study, critical subjects related to safety, structural integrity and thermal hydraulics which found in the last fiscal year has been examined and the plant concept has been modified. Furthermore, fundamental specifications of main systems and components have been set and economy has been evaluated. As a result of this study, the plant concept of the sodium-cooled large-scale reactor has been constructed, which has a prospect to satisfy the economic goal (construction cost: less than 200,000yens/kWe, etc.) and has a prospect to solve the critical subjects.

The mechanism of the process of radiation-induced transformation that leads normal mammalian cell to malignant feature is still not clear. However, a drastic development of molecular biological technique in medical biology research field since 1990's have progressively revealed the mechanisms of this process and recent results have been starting to incorporate in the recent radiation risk estimate procedures. This report describes the results of the survey and review of the articles concerned with experimental studies of radiation induced in vitro transformation, since 1993 to 1997.

The Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) had carried out the specially funded project of constructing a database "DRESA (Database for Radiation Exposure and Safety Assessment)" with an electronic text on safety assessment of low dose ionizing radiation. The contents and the database system were arranged and designed to provide the fundamental information/data for scientific and reasonable understanding of radiation health effects, radiation risk assessment and radiation protection. Present report explained the data title and its contents, data file formats and system structure of the database. Potentialities and difficulties in constructing WWW database were also discussed.
