We have dismantled uranium enrichment facilities in Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center since their operation finished in 2001, and the total amount of metallic wastes is estimated to be about 130 thousand tons. Eighty percent of them can be disposed as nonradioactive waste (NR), but there are some steel parts possibly uranium-contaminated. We need removing painted surface of such steels and radiologically surveying to dispose them as NRs. Though painted surfaces have been conventionally removed through hand working with grinders, this manual work requires installation of green house, protective clothing, and full-face mask, in order to prevent dispersion and inhalation of airborne dusts. We desire further developments of surface cleaning techniques to reduce time, cost, workload, and secondary waste generation caused by excessive grinding. Therefore, in this study, we focused on the laser cleaning technology used for the separation and removal of paint films at construction sites. In order to improve the coating separation and removal technology for NR objects, we evaluated the coating separation and removal performance of NR steel surface by laser cleaning system, observed the coating scattering behavior by high-speed camera and investigated the coating recovery method, evaluated the laser separation and removal performance of steel surface powder, and thermodynamically evaluated the uranium compounds on steel surface. We additionally evaluated the feasibility of laser cleaning techniques in our works basing on these results, and discussed future work plans for further developments of laser cleaning techniques.

Times Cited Count:16 Percentile:68.37(Physics, Multidisciplinary)We show that the strongly correlated 4-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra, as we have discovered for YbRhSi and YbCuSi. Theoretical analysis shows us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from a crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4 symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle resolved core-level spectra at a temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measurement temperatures are on the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies.

The three main facilities, (1) the Accelerator Facility, (2) the Target Facility and (3) the Test Facility, are the subject of validation activities that include the construction of either full scale prototypes or smartly devised scaled down facilities that will allow a straightforward extrapolation to IFMIF needs. The installation of a Linac of 1.125 MW (125 mA and 9 MeV) of deuterons started in March 2013 in Rokkasho. The world largest liquid Li test loop is running in Oarai with an ambitious experimental programme for the years ahead. A full scale high flux test module that will house 1000 small specimens developed jointly in Europe and Japan has been constructed in Germany together with its He gas loop. A full scale medium flux test module to carry out on-line creep measurement has been constructed in Switzerland.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Among these analogues, we discovered that a small allyl group would maintain potent enzyme inhibitory activity compared to that of the -methylbenzyl moiety in clinical candidate 1 (KNI-764, also known as JE-2147, AG-1776 or SM-319777). Introduction of an anilinic amino group to 2 (KNI-727) improved water-solubility and anti-HIV-1 activity. X-ray crystallographic analysis of 13k (KNI-1689) with a -methallyl group at P2' position revealed hydrophobic interactions with Ala28, Ile84, and Ile50' similar to that of 1. The presence of an additional methyl group on the allyl group in compound 13k significantly increased anti-HIV activity over 1, while providing a rational drug design for structural minimization and improving membrane permeability.

Future synchrotron light sources based on the energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) are expected to be capable of producing super-brilliant and/or ultra-short pulses of synchrotron radiation. Our Japanese collaboration team is making efforts for realizing an ERL-based hard X-ray source. We report recent progress in our R&D efforts.

The growth process of thermal oxides on Si(110) surface and the development of their interfacial bonding structures have been investigated by using real-time synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy. As a result, it was clarified that the Si component in the Si 2p core-level spectra is always much higher than that of Si for 0-1 mono-layer (ML) oxides on Si(110) surface. Observations on the time-evolution of the O 1s core-level spectrum indicates that the autocatalytic-reaction model proposed for the Si(001) oxidation can be also applicable to the Si(110) oxidation.

Times Cited Count:179 Percentile:94.93(Biology)Experimental evidence has accumulated demonstrating that biological effects of ionizing radiation arise in non-irradiated bystander cells that have received signals from near or distant irradiated cells. This phenomenon has been termed the radiation-induced bystander effect and challenges the long-held tenet that cell nucleus is the quintessential target for radiation damage. Bystander effects encompass a range of endpoints, such as genetic and epigenetic alterations, changes in gene expression, signal transduction pathway activation, and late-arising effects in their descendants. Proposed mechanisms involve gap junctional cell-to-cell communication, transmissible soluble factors, oxidative stress, lipid rafts, and calcium fluxes. In this article, we review proposed mechanisms underpinning the bystander effect and also briefly discuss the potential benefit of bystander effects in cancer radiotherapy.

This research aims to gain an understanding of local socio-environmental characteristics surrounding the Ningyo-Toge Environmental Engineering Center, from the viewpoint of bidirectional information sharing. In order to clarify the relevant issues, we analyzed publicly available information over the past 20 years. We also conducted an internet survey to assess risk perceptions etc. and feelings toward local enterprises, of residents in the surrounding localities and the general public. Expectations for economic benefits of the facilities began to fade in mid 1980s while negative aspects drew increasing attention. Local assemblies disputed over reliability, not technical safety. In Okayama prefecture there found a strong sense of avoidance toward radioactive waste disposal, the background of their refusal of carrying-in of waste rock from Togo-cho, Shimane prefecture. A majority of local residents see nuclear facilities as highly dangerous. National newspapers, NHK, professional researchers were identified as reliable sources of information regarding atomic energy and radioactivity, indicating the effectiveness of information dissemination through them. Though residents in the surrounding localities are aware of economic benefits of nuclear facilities, a majority of them would refuse the siting of a new one. Meanwhile, revitalization of local communities was found to be in need, in which local enterprises were expected to participate.

In the 3rd Stage Crossover Research (1998 to 2003), a project on Development of a dynamic transfer model of radionuclides in the soil ecosphere,is currently being promoted. The following five researches are carried out in this project. 1) Research into the forms of existence of nuclides and their change in the soil (NIRS and JAERI), 2) Research into the transition behavior of radionuclides in plants (IES, RIKEN and NIRS), 3) Research into the relation to the microorganism and on environmental remediation (RIKEN, JAERI and NIRS), 4) Research on the migration of radionuclides from atmosphere to soil and plant (MRI and JAERI), and 5) Database construction on transfer parameters (JAERI, NIRS and MRI). JAERI, MRI and NIRS are working on the development of a dynamic transfer model such as MOGRA for radionuclides on the basis of a gained knowledge about the environmental behavior through cooperation with universities, etc. This model is also capable of the predicting the behavior of materials that are harmful to the environment such as hazardous heavy metals discharged in the soil ecosphere. In this presentation, we will overview the ourcome of the 3rd stage research.

Fugen Nuclear Power Station ("Fugen") is a prototype Advanced Thermal Reactor (ATR), it has been demonstrated the plutonium utilization by loading many Mixed Oxide Fuels (MOX) since the reactor start up March 1979, and no fuel defect had been occurred, The MOX fuel assemblies has the high reliability and has been loaded more than 700 fuel assemblies. This is the largest in the world as a thermal neutron reactor. However, "Fugen" is planning to stop its operation in the year 2003, because the role of the Fugen almost finished. Therefore, we are going to summarize the ATR project including the Plutonium utilization experience. This paper is summarized as part of the experience.
