A combination of a pulsed molecular beam, photo-stimulated desorption and resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization techniques was used for probing the change in the rotational states of molecularly chemisorbed H on the surface. Our result shows that fast ortho-para conversion of chemisorbed H occurs. The conversion time was experimentally determined to be about 2 s, which is in good agreement with a previous theoretical calculation. This agreement supports that the ortho-para conversion mechanism of the molecularly chemisorbed H on Pd(210) is the two-step process based on the hyperfine-Coulomb excitation.

As increases from 0 to 0.5, the in-plane component of decreases proportionally with the metamagnetic transition field. In the antiferromagnetic cT phase, is constant and spin fluctuations show an isotropic character in contrast to their behavior in the paramagnetic ucT phase. These results indicate that the in-plane spin fluctuations due to the quasi-two-dimensional crystal structure play a significant role in the metamagnetic transition of this system.

The H12 report demonstrated the feasibility of safe and technically reliable geological disposal in 1999. The Government of Japan re-evaluated the geological disposal program in terms of technical feasibility based on state-of-the-art geosciences and implementation process, because more than 10 years have passed from H12 and the Great Earthquake and nuclear accident have increased public concern regarding nuclear issues and natural hazards to cause accidents at nuclear facilities. Following the re-evaluation, the Government concluded further to promote geological disposal program, and thus the Basic Policy for Final Disposal was revised in 2015 including a new approach to siting process with identification of "Scientifically Preferable Areas". NUMO and relevant research organizations such as JAEA have been carrying out R and D activities to increase technical reliability for geological disposal. NUMO has started to develop a generic safety case.

A concept of a plutonium burner HTGR named as Clean Burn, which has a high nuclear proliferation resistance, had been proposed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency. In addition to the high nuclear proliferation resistance, in order to enhance the safety, we propose to introduce PuO-YSZ TRISO fuel with ZrC coating to the Clean Burn. In this study, we conduct fabrication tests aiming to establish the basic technologies for fabrication of PuO-YSZ TRISO fuel with ZrC coating. Additionally, we conduct a quantitative evaluation of the security for the safety, a design of the fuel and the reactor core, and a safety evaluation for the Clean Burn to confirm the feasibility. This study is conducted by The University of Tokyo, Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Fuji Electric Co., Ltd., and Nuclear Fuel Industries, Ltd. It was started in FY2014 and will be completed in FY2017, and the first year of the implementation was on schedule.

The characteristics of sodium-cooled metal fuel core compared to MOX fuel core are given by its higher heavy metal density and superior neutron economy. By taking advantage of these characteristics and allowing flexibility in metal fuel specification and core design conditions as sodium void reactivity and bundle pressure drop, core design with high burnup, high breeding ratio and low fuel inventory features will be achievable. On ground of the major achievements in metal fuels utilization as driver fuels in sodium fast reactors in U.S., the metal fuel core concept is selected as a possible alternative of MOX fuel core concept in FaCT project. This report describes the following items as a result of the joint study on "Reactor core and fuel design of metal fuel core of sodium-cooled fast reactor" conducted by JAEA and CRIEPI during 4 years from fiscal year 2009 to 2012.

Low pH cementitious (LopHC) materials are expected to be used in the construction of an underground repository for the geological disposal of high level radioactive waste (HLW). A fundamental aspect of the development of LopHC is the accurate and reliable measurement of the pore fluid pH in order to qualify and help quantify mix designs to achieve specific pH targets. The main objective of the current research is the development of an agreed protocol for measuring the pH value of LopHC. There are four different methods described in the literature for characterizing the pore solution of cementitious materials: (1) Pore fluid expression; (2) Leaching methods, including both in-situ and ex-situ techniques); (3) Percolation methods; and (4) Embedded pH sensors. In a first step, different parameters that may affect the measured pH values were evaluated, including the solid/liquid ratio, fineness, carbonation, time, and the results obtained from a pH meter in comparison with an OH titration. Based on the results obtained from the first step, selected protocols were proposed and tested for reproducibility and repeatability in 8 laboratories of 7 countries using the same LopHC sample. The proposed methodologies showed very promising results with low deviation and high reproducibility and have allowed the development of an agreed set of simple protocols for the determination of pH in LopHC.

A metal fuel core has specific features on high heavy metal density, hard neutron spectrum, and efficient neutron utilization. Enlarged applicable design envelops would improve core performances and features: higher breeding ratio, compacted reactor core, and, smaller amount of Pu-fissile inventory. A joint study on "Reactor Core and Fuel Design of Metal Fuel Core of Sodium Cooled Fast Reactor" by Japan Atomic Energy Agency and Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry has been conducted during Japanese fiscal years of 2007 and 2008. This report shows the results on (1) the study on applicable design ranges of metal fuel specifications, (2) the study on conceptual core designs for high breeding ratio, and (3) the safety study on metal fuel core designed in the Fast Reactor Cycle Technology Development (FaCT) Project.

Since the mutation site does not directly bind to IL-13 R2, we carried out NMR relaxation analyses of the wild-type IL-13 and IL-13 R110Q in order to examine whether the R110Q mutation affects the internal motions in IL-13 molecules. The results showed that the internal motion in the micro- to millisecond time scale on helix D, which is suggested to be important for the interaction between IL-13 and IL-13R2, is increased in IL-13-R110Q compared with that in the wild-type IL-13. It therefore appears that the difference in the internal motions on helix D between the wild-type IL-13 and IL-13-R110Q may be involved in their affinity differences with IL-13R2.

We measured the electrical resistivity and AC-specific heat for a canted ferromagnet CePtAl under pressures using a diamond-anvilpressure cell. With increasing pressure, the magnetic ordering temperature increases monotonously, becomes constant above 8 GPa and then starts to decrease steeply in a narrow pressure region from 10.3 to 10.9 GPa, indicating the first-order like phase transition. The similar pressure dependence of was obtained in the AC-specific heat measurement.

The electronic state has been investigated by the de Haas-van Alphen experiment, indicating the similar cylindrical Fermi surfaces as in an antiferromagnet UPtGa. We have also studied the pressure effect by measuring the electrical resistivity. The Nel temperature decreases with increasing pressure and becomes zero at 3.1 GPa. The antiferromagnetic state is changed into the paramagnetic state above 3.1 GPa.
