To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

In this paper, we studied the crystal structure and phonon dynamics of tetrahedrites (Cu,Zn)(Sb,As)S. The results revealed that the Cu atoms in a planar coordination are rattling, which effectively scatter phonons. These findings provide a new strategy for the development of highly efficient thermoelectric materials with planar coordination.

Dispersionless flat phonon branches that are mainly associated with a large vibration of Bi atoms are observed at a relatively low energy of = 6 - 6.7 meV. The phonon energy softens upon Se doping owing to its heavier atomic mass than S atom and the expansion of lattice constant. Simultaneously, the lattice thermal conductivity lowered upon Se doping as the same manner of the phonon softening. These suggest that despite the lack of an oversized cage in LaOBiSSe, rattling motions of Bi atoms can scatter phonon like rattling in cage compounds, contributing to enhance the thermoelectric property.

By the precise imaging optics and double time fiducial system having been installed, the lateral resolution on the sample surface and the precision of the temporal synchronization between the SXRL and Ti:Sapphire laser pulses were improved to be 700 nm and 2 ps, respectively. By using this system, the initial stage (before 200 ps) of the ablation process of the Pt surface pumped by 80 fs Ti:Sapphire laser pulse was observed by the comparison between the soft X-ray reflective image and interferogram. We have succeeded in the direct observation of the unique ablation process around the ablation threshold such as the rapid increase of the surface roughness and surface vibration.

We have succeeded in simultaneous observation of the ablation front and the expansion front with thin filmy structure in the femto-second laser ablation process of a gold target by using the 13.9 nm soft X-ray probe (incident angle to the sample 70 deg) with soft X-ray interferometer. The dependence on the laser local fluence and materials was obtained by the comparison between gold and tungsten.

The major problems of the JENDL-3.2 data were solved by the new library: overestimation of criticality values for thermal fission reactors was improved by the modifications of fission cross sections and fission neutron spectra for U; incorrect energy distributions of secondary neutrons from important heavy nuclides were replaced with statistical model calculations; the inconsistency between elemental and isotopic evaluations was removed for medium-heavy nuclides. Moreover, covariance data were provided for 20 nuclides. The reliability of JENDL-3.3 was investigated by the benchmark analyses on reactor and shielding performances. The results of the analyses indicate that JENDL-3.3 predicts various reactor and shielding characteristics better than JENDL-3.2.

The lowtemperature electronic specific heat coefficient has the anomalous large value, =1.1J/Kmol, which is the largest among the heavy fermion uranium compounds. It also becomes the superconductor below T=0.85K. Therefore, UBe is an important material as a strongly correlated electron system, and it is necessary to study from both sides of the theory and the experiment. The measurement suggests that the Fermi surface of UBe may consist of small sheets. The energy band structure and the Fermi surface for UBe are calculated by the relativistic linear APW method.

We have investigated the initial oxidation process on an Si(110)-162 surface by real time synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-XPS). As a result, a rapid initial oxidation regime was found to exist on this surface, which is not present on other crystal orientations. Analyses of the O1s spectra suggest insertion of oxygen atoms at the Si-Si bonds as the predominant process during initial oxidation. The rapid initial oxidation is accompanied by decrease of the Si2p subpeak that is related to Si(110)-162 reconstruction, indicating the preferential oxidation at the pentagon pair.

In this study, we have investigated adsorption of oxygen molecules on Si(110)-162 clean surface at room temperature by synchrotron radiation photoemission spectros (SR-PES). The SR-PES experiments were conducted at the surface chemistry end-station of BL23SU in the SPring-8. The photon energy was 334 eV. Samples were B-doped p-type Si(110) wafers, and were flash-annealed in an UHV ambient prior to the exposure to oxygen gas at room temperature at the gas pressure of 6.710 Pa. By observing a structural change after a mild annealing, we have confirmed presence of a metastable state of oxidation on this RT-oxidized Si(110) surface.

We have investigated that initial oxidation processes of Si(110) surfaces at room temperature and thermal stability of the oxide layer via synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-PES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We found in the SR-PES experiments that metastable oxygen-condensed local structures were formed in the early stage of Si(110) oxidation at room temperature. After thermal annealing of 15 min at 573 K, highly-oxidized components of Si2p spectrum, Si and Si, were enhanced whereas Si was decreased. This is due to structural relaxation of the strained metastable oxidation structures on the surface and following change to stable highly-oxidized structures. Furthermore, the structural change from the metastable structure in the surface oxidized at room temperature to the stable cluster structure was directly observed via STM.

Initial oxidation process of Si(110)-162 clean surface has been investigated with synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy. We found that the intensity of the alpha peak, one of the surface core level shifts in the Si 2p photoemission spectra, decreased in the just early stage of oxidation. And it was possible to relate this component with the rapid initial oxidation, which was unique to Si(110) surface. According to recent studies, this component was attributed to the 1st and the 2nd Si layer. We also found that there were significant amount of Si component just after introducing the oxygen gas, which was contrast to the oxidation of Si(001) surface.
