We performed proof-of-principle experiments to demonstrate the removal capability of metal parts, where we focused on the observation of removal processes from a metallic sample using a 5.5-kW continuous wave fiber laser combined with continuous and pulsed water jets.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) adopts melting process for the waste processing and packaging method of radioactive miscellaneous solid waste in NSRI because melting process is effective in radioactivity evaluation, volume reduction, and stabilization treatment. Metal melting processing facilities, Incinerator, and Nonmetal melting processing facilities (hereinafter referred to as melting process facilities) have taken lots of safety measures, including measures for preventing the recurrence of the fire accidents. To exchange opinions and discuss the validity of these measures and so on with internal personnel and external experts, "Discussions on Melting Process Facilities" was held. As a document collection, this paper summarizes presentation materials of discussion meetings. Presentation materials describe "Outline of AVRF", "Safety measures in the melting facilities in WVRF", "Operation management of the melting facilities in WVRF", "Comparison of the past accident cases between facilities in and outside Japan and WVRF", and "Introduction of past accident cases and safety measures in other facilities from each committee".

In decommissioning of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, a retrieval process of fuel debris in the Primary Containment Vessel by a remote operation is one of the key issues. In this process, prevention of spreading radioactive materials is one of the important considerations. Furthermore, an applicable technique to the process requires keeping of reasonable processing-efficiency. We propose to use the combined technique including a laser light and a water jet as a retrieval technique of the fuel debris. The laser processing technique combined with a repetitive pulsed water jet could perform an efficient retrieval processing. Our experimental result encourages us to promote further development of the technique towards a real application at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Increase of the scintillator array from 44 to 88 and expanse of the distance between the two layers contributed to the improvements of detection efficiency and angular resolution, respectively. Measurements were performed over the riverbed of the Ukedo river of Namie town in Fukushima Prefecture. By programming of flight path and speed, the areas of 65 m 60 m and 65 m 180 m were measured during about 20 and 30 minutes, respectively. By the analysis the air dose rate maps at 1 m height were obtained precisely with the angular resolution corresponding to the position resolution of about 10 m from 10 m height. Hovering flights were executed over the hot spot areas for 10-20 minutes at 5-20 m height. By using the reconstruction software the -ray images including the hot spots were obtained with the angular resolution same as that evaluated in the laboratory (about 10).

As one of effective applications of the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR), JAEA has a plan to produce Mo by (n,) method ((n,)Mo production), a parent nuclide of Tc. In this study, preliminary irradiation test was carried out with the high-density molybdenum trioxide (MoO) pellets in the hydraulic conveyer (HYD) of the Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR) and the Tc solution extracted from Mo was evaluated. After the irradiation test of the high-density MoO pellets in the KUR, Tc was extracted from the Mo solution and the recovery rate of Tc achieved the target values. The Tc solution also got the value that satisfied the standard value for Tc radiopharmaceutical products by the solvent extraction method.

It has been irradiated in the concrete cell, the microscope lead cell, the lead cell for materials examinations and the iron cell and, in the JMTR Hot Laboratory Facilities, examines it after the irradiation such as fuel and nuclear reactor structure materials. I install a monitoring board for a concrete cell, a microscope lead cell, a lead cell for materials examinations and iron cells in the control room I watch concentration such as the minus number pressure in these each cell, the air absorption dose rate in the cell, the cover door opening and shutting indication and to control it. As for these monitoring boards, about 30 through 40 or more passed after an in-service start, and high aging decided to update it in consideration of the driving of approximately 20 years after JMTR re-operation because trouble by becoming it and outbreak of the malfunction were concerned about.

Following FY2011, JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, the tree diagram of methodology of groundwater travel time has been extended for crystalline rock, in addition, tree diagram for sedimentary rock newly has been organized. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the existing approach has been improved in terms of a practical task, and applied and tested for near field focusing on the buffer. In addition, the uncertainty of some important processes and its impact on safety functions are discussed though analysis. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, the approaches for parameter setting have been developed for sorption for rocks and solubility, and applied and tested through parameter setting exercises for key radionuclides.

The Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) is expected to contribute to the expansion of industrial utilization, such as the domestic production of Mo for the medical diagnosis medicine Tc. Production by the (n, ) method is proposed as domestic Mo production in JMTR because of the low amount of radioactive wastes and the easy Mo/Tc production process. Molybdenum oxide (MoO) pellets, poly zirconium compounds (PZC) and poly titanium compounds (PTC) are used as the irradiation target and generator for the production of Mo/Tc by the (n, ) method. However, it is necessary to use the enriched MoO, which is very expensive, to increase the specific activity of Mo. Additionally, a large amount of used PZC and PTC is generated after the decay of Mo. Therefore, this recycling technology of used PZC/PTC has been developed to recover molybdenum (Mo) as an effective use of resources and a reduction of radioactive wastes. The total Mo recovery rate of this process was 95.8%. From the results of the hot experiments, we could demonstrate that the recovery of MoO and the recycling of PZC are possible. In the future, the equipment of recovering Mo will be installed in JMTR-Hot Cell, and this recycling process will be able to contribute to the reduction of production costs of Tc and the reduction of radioactive wastes.

JMTR focus on the activation method. By carrying out the preliminary tests using irradiation facilities existing, and verification tests using the irradiation facility that has developed in the cutting-edge research and development strategic strengthening business, as irradiation tests towards the production of Mo, we have been conducting research and development that can contribute to supply about 25% for Mo demand in Japan and the stable supply of radiopharmaceutical. This report describes a summary of the status of the preliminary tests for the production of Mo: Maintenance of test equipment in the facility in JMTR Hot Laboratory in preparation for research and development for the production of Mo in JMTR and using MoO pellet irradiated at Kyoto University Research Reactor Institute (KUR).

(4) Study on ensuring quality of knowledge: framework for ensuring quality of knowledge has been studied and examined aimed at the likely disposal facility condition.

Times Cited Count:9 Percentile:49.6(Physics, Nuclear)Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

As a part of maintenance technology of a large-sized glove box for handling of TRU nuclides, we developed replacement technology for front acrylic panels using the bag-in/bag-out method and applied this technology to replace the deteriorated front acrylic panels at Waste Safety Testing Facility (WASTEF) in Nuclear Science Research Institute of Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). As a consequence, we could safely replace the front acrylic panels under the condition of continuous negative pressure only with partial decontamination of the glove box. We also demonstrated that the present technology is highly effective in points of safety, workability and cost as compared to the usual replacement technology for front acrylic panels of a glove box, where workers in an air-line suit replace directly the front acrylic panels in a green house.

The condition of facilities and machinery used continuously were investigated before the renewal work of JMTR on FY 2007. The subjects of investigation were reactor building, primary cooling system tanks, secondary cooling system piping and tower, emergency generator and so on. As the result, it was confirmed that some facilities and machinery were necessary to repair and others were used continuously for long term by maintaining on the long-term maintenance plan. JMTR is planed to renew by the result of this investigation.

For this purpose, the ICRP has given the dose coefficients and the retention and excretion rates for various radionuclides. However, these dosimetric quantities are calculated only in typical conditions, therefore, are not necessarily covered enough in the case of dose assessment in which specific information on the incident or/and individual biokinetic characteristics should be taken into account retrospectively. This paper describes a developed PC-based package of software REIDAC to meet the needs in retrospective dose assessment. REIDAC was verified by comparisons with dosimetric quantities given on the ICRP publications and several examples of practical use were also shown.

A high-temperature ultrasonic measuring system had been designed and installed in a glovebox (711-DGB) to study a mechanical property of nuclear fuel containing trans-uranium (TRU) elements. A figuration apparatus for the cylinder-type sample preparation had also been modified and installed in an established glovebox (142-D). The system consists of an ultrasonic probe, a heating furnace, cooling water-circulating system, a cooling air compressor, vacuum system, gas supplying system and control system. An A/D converter board and an pulsar/Receiver board for the measurement of wave velocity were installed in a personal computer. The apparatus was modified to install into the glovebox. Some safety functions were supplied to the control system. The shape and size of the sample was revised to minimize the amount of TRU elements for the use of the measurement. The maximum sample temperature is 1500 C. The performance of the installed apparatuses and the glovebox were confirmed through a series of tests.
