Deuteron ordering in ice containing impurities; A Neutron diffraction study

通常の氷であるIce Ihの水素原子は無秩序に配置しているが、低い温度で無限の時間を経過させると、水素原子の配置が秩序化した構造(Ice XI)へ変化すると予測されている。このIce XIの形成過程を調べるために、KOD等の水酸化物を含有させて変化に要する時間を短縮させた氷結晶の中性子回折を測定した。相転移点(76K)以下の特定の温度域(62-70K)において、氷の中性子回折が時間の経過に伴って変化する過程を観測した。また、回折プロファイルのリートベルド解析を行い、Ice XIへの相転移に伴う構造パラメーターの変化を温度と時間の関数として分析した。この分析結果に基づいて、さまざまな条件下(温度や不純物濃度等)におけるIce XIの発生と成長の過程の特徴について発表する。そして、無限の時間経過において、完全に水素原子が秩序化した構造の氷が自然界に存在しうるのかについての洞察を述べる。

We measured neutron diffraction of powdered samples of ice containing impurities (e.g., potassium deuteroxide, sodium deuteroxide) to analyze the formation of ice XI, a deuterium-ordered phase of ice, from ice Ih, a disordered phase. We found that the diffraction profiles changed with time for several days at 62-70 K, which are below the transition temperature = 76 K. From the Rietveld analysis of the diffraction profiles, we determined the change of the structural parameters with the phase transition. The structural analysis provides direct evidence for the existence of deuteron-ordered arrangements in ice containing impurities below . On the basis of the Rietveld analysis, we obtained the mass fraction () of ice XI as functions of time and temperature. We report a structural observation for the nucleation and growth of ice XI under various conditions (such as temperature variations and impurity effects), which leads to understand whether or not f reaches unity at an infinite annealing time.
