A laser-driven strongly nonlinear wake wave near wave breaking can act as a partially reflecting relativistic mirror (the flying mirror). Such a mirror directly converts low-frequency counter-propagating radiation into high-frequency radiation, with a frequency multiplication factor proportional to the $$gamma$$-factor squared. We present results of theoretical and experimental studies of a new coherent high-frequency radiation source based on the light reflection from the relativistic flying mirror. This source promises to generate intense coherent ultrashort XUV and X-ray pulses that inherit their temporal shape and polarization from the original optical-frequency (laser) pulses. Furthermore, the reflected radiation bears important information about the reflecting wake wave itself. We also discuss the non-trivial characteristics of the reflected radiation caused by the relativistic dynamics of the curved flying mirror.
