Development of heavy-ion microbeam systems for biological and medical research

医学生物学研究のための重イオンマイクロビーム装置の開発

原子力機構では、高崎量子応用研究所TIARAにおいて、生物試料照射用マイクロビーム装置の開発を行ってきた。当該装置は、5$$mu$$m径の重イオンビームで細胞を一つ一つ照準して照射することができる。このマイクロビーム装置を利用して、動植物の培養細胞を始め、カイコ初期胚・幼虫,シロイヌナズナ根組織,線虫などのさまざまな生物材料に対する照射実験が行われ、放射線生物学領域のみならず、生理学,発生生物学,神経生物学など、幅広い領域の研究に貢献してきた。

We had developed the heavy-ion microbeam system at TIARA of the JAEA-Takasaki, and utilized for analyzing heavy-ion induced biological effects. The collimating heavy-ion microbeam system at JAEA-Takasaki has provided target irradiation of heavy charged particles to biological material at atmospheric pressure using a minimum beam size 5 $$mu$$m in diameter. A variety of biological material has been irradiated using this microbeam system including cultured mammalian and higher plant cells, isolated fibers of mouse skeletal muscle, silk-worm (${it Bombyx mori}$) embryos and larvae, ${it Arabidopsis thaliana}$ roots, and the nematode ${it Caenorhabditis elegans}$. The system has been applied and contributed to the investigation of mechanisms within biological organisms not only in the context of radiation biology, but also in the fields of general biology such as physiology, developmental biology and neurobiology.
