Measurement of oxygen chemical diffusion in PuO$$_{2-x}$$ and analysis of oxygen diffusion in PuO$$_{2-x}$$ and (Pu,U)O$$_{2-x}$$

It is well known that PuO$$_{2}$$ having fluorite structure is non-stoichimetric compound. Stoichiometry significantly affects physical properties such as lattice parameter, diffusion coefficient and thermal conductivity. In previous work, oxygen potential of PuO$$_{2-x}$$ was determined as functions of O/M ratio and temperature, and the data was analyzed based on defect chemistry. This result shows that the defect cluster of oxygen vacancy is stable in non-stoichiometric PuO$$_{2}$$. In this work, chemical diffusion of the defect was investigated in PuO$$_{2-x}$$. The thermo gravimeter was employed for the measurement. The O/M ratio was estimated from the weight change of the specimen. The time dependence of O/M change was analyzed, and chemical diffusion coefficient was determined as a function of temperature. The measured data was compared with that of MOX which was reported in previous work. The diffusion coefficient decreased with Pu content.
