Determination of fusion barrier distributions from quasielastic scattering cross sections towards superheavy nuclei synthesis

Excitation functions of quasielastic scattering cross sections for the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{208}$$Pb, $$^{50}$$Ti + $$^{208}$$Pb, and $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm reactions were successfully measured by using the gas-filled recoil-ion separator GARIS. Fusion barrier distributions were extracted from these data, and compared with the coupled-channels calculations. It was found that the peak energies of the barrier distributions for the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{208}$$Pb and $$^{50}$$Ti + $$^{208}$$Pb systems coincide with those of the 2n evaporation channel cross sections for the systems, while that of the $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm is located slightly below the 4n evaporation ones. This results provide us helpful information to predict the optimum beam energy to synthesize superheavy nuclei.

The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

The fusion reaction of $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm $$rightarrow$$ $$^{296}$$Lv$$^{ast}$$ was studied using the gas-filled recoil-ion separator GARIS at RIKEN. A total of seven $$alpha$$ and spontaneous-fission decay chains were observed, which would originate from the reaction products of the element 116, $$^{292}$$Lv and $$^{293}$$Lv. Decay properties observed in the chains are in good agreement with the previously published ones. However, one of the chains showed a discrepancy, indicating the new spontaneous-fission branch in $$^{285}$$Cn or the production of the new isotope $$^{294}$$Lv.

Microfission chambers (MFCs) will provide total neutron source strength in ITER. The MFC is a pencil-sized gas counter containing the fissile material, $$^{235}$$U. The MFCs will be installed behind blanket modules in the vacuum vessel (VV). Double coaxial mineral insulated (MI) cables will carry signals from the MFCs to the upper port. Though the MI cables will be installed at a factory of the vacuum vessel or ITER assembly hall, detectors with $$^{235}$$U will be installed to the vacuum vessel at the tokamak pit. Then, the MI cable should be connected in the vacuum vessel. In this work, the connection of the MI cable with the MFC was conceptually designed. The MI cable should be also installed with small curvature radius (R) of 100 $$sim$$ 200 mm to avoid the VV structure and other diagnostics. So, the vending test of the MI cable was conducted. As a result, damages leak, electrical disconnection and the change in insulation resistance have not been observed at R = 100 mm.

We have initiated a research on the coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical-Chemical (THMC) processes and are trying to carry out numerical experiments on the coupled THMC processes in order to predict the near-field long-term evolution. This paper describes the modified THMC model to add on the function of de-gases and gases diffusion, accumulation and dilution phenomena for mass transport analysis, and of ionic exchange, surface reaction and kinetic reaction for geochemical analysis. And also the results of demonstration study with THMC code are shown.
