Pressure effect on isotope fractionation factor

Sano, Asami; Ito, Shoichi*; Suzumura, Akimasa*; Ueno, Yuichiro*; Yagi, Hikaru*; Inoue, Toru*; Kawazoe, Takaaki*

Koatsuryoku No Kagaku To Gijutsu, 30(2), p.85 - 94, 2020/10

Minerals and rocks exhibit various isotope compositions depending on their origins and histories. In interpreting their isotopic variations, the equilibrium isotope fractionation factor is a key because it depends on the environment parameters such as temperature. Recent studies have shown that the effect of pressure on the isotope fractionation, which was considered negligible compared to temperature, is significant under the conditions of the Earth's interior. In this article we review recent advances in experimental studies to determine the isotope fractionation of iron and hydrogen at high pressure over several GPa, discussing their issues and future perspectives.

Synchronized gravitational slope deformation and active faulting; A Case study on and around the Neodani fault, central Japan

On the basis of pit excavations and sediment cores at an off-fault deep-seated gravitational slope deformation (DGSD) site and a trench excavation across the active Neodani fault at a nearby site, we examined the records of DGSD and surface-rupturing paleoearthquakes of the Neodani fault. We found the four most recent DGSD events and the four most recent surface-rupturing earthquakes, respectively and conclude that the ages of events are overlapped each other. We infer that static crustal strain from repeated seismogenic faulting plays an important role in the occurrence of DGSD events, at least in the immediate vicinity of active faults, although coseismic severe shaking would have at least some effect on them. Our case study suggests that off-fault DGSDs can be used to reconstruct or refine the paleoseismic history of a nearby active fault.

The structure of hydrous amorphous SiO$$_{2}$$ is fundamental to investigate the effects of water on the physicochemical properties of oxide glasses and magma. The hydrous SiO$$_{2}$$ glass with 13 wt.% D$$_{2}$$O was synthesized under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions and its structure was investigated by small angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction, and neutron diffraction experiments at pressures of up to 10 GPa and room temperature. This hydrous glass is separated into a SiO$$_{2}$$ rich major phase and a D$$_{2}$$O rich minor phase. Medium-range order of the hydrous glass shrinks compared to the anhydrous SiO$$_{2}$$ glass due to disruption of SiO$$_{4}$$ linkage by formation of Si-OD deuterioxyl, while the pressure response is similar. Most of D$$_{2}$$O molecules are in the small domains and hardly penetrate into SiO$$_{2}$$ major phase.

Effects of zirconium oxides and oxidation products of zircaloy-4 on water radiolysis were investigated to predict the hydrogen generation from the water-immersed debris after a severe accident of a nuclear power plant. Observed yields of hydrogen in water containing the oxides were measured as a function of their weight fractions. Assuming that energies of Co-60 $$gamma$$-ray deposited to water and the oxides brought about the water radiolysis to generate hydrogen independently, the radiolysis showed an additional term of hydrogen generation due to the energy deposition to the oxides. This term seemed to be dependent on the specific surface area or particle size of oxides, but not on the crystal structure of oxides in our experimental results. The oxides in distilled water gave the strong enhancement of term. The enhancement tended to saturate with increasing the weight fraction of oxides and was not apparent in the seawater.

PLANET is a time-of-flight (ToF) neutron beamline dedicated to high-pressure and high-temperature experiments. The large six-axis multi-anvil high-pressure press designed for ToF neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators to eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell assembly. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ($$Delta$$ $$d$$/$$d$$ $$sim$$ 0.6%) and the accessible $$d$$-spacing range (0.2-8.4 ${AA}$) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

Consideration of radiolytic behavior in diluted and concentrated systems of seawater for computational simulation of hydrogen generation

Nagaishi, Ryuji; Inoue, Masao; Hino, Ryutaro; Ogawa, Toru

Proceedings of 2014 Nuclear Plant Chemistry Conference (NPC 2014) (USB Flash Drive), 9 Pages, 2014/10

Since seawater has been used as a coolant for reactors and spent fuel pools in broken reactor buildings at Fukushima Daiichi NPS accident, radioactive contaminated water emitted following the accident has contained salt content of seawater at high concentrations, different from that at TMI-2 accident. Radiolysis of seawater leading to hydrogen generation and corrosion has been simulated and reported by several groups. However, the proposed radiolysis models cannot be always applied to water radiolysis at the wide range of salt concentrations present in the NPS, mainly because primary yields of radiolysis products of water and radiation-induced reactions are dependent on the salt concentration. In this study, the radiolytic behavior in diluted and concentrated systems of seawater was considered on the basis of results in steady state and pulse radiolysis experiments, in which the above salt effects were demonstrated from the obtained results.

We demonstrate a large enhancement of critical current density ($$J$$$$_{rm c}$$) up to 1.0 $$times$$ 10$$^{7}$$ A/cm$$^{2}$$ at 5 K under self-field in (Ba,K)Fe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$ single crystals by irradiating 320 MeV Au ions. With the very promising potential of this material in mind, we have fabricated a (Ba,K)Fe$$_{2}$$As$$_{2}$$ superconducting wire through a powder-in-tube method combined with the hot isostatic pressing technique, whose effectiveness has been proven in industrial Bi2223 tapes. The Jc in the wire at 4.2 K has reached 37 kA/cm$$^{2}$$ under self-field and 3.0 kA/cm$$^{2}$$ at 90 kOe. Magneto-optical imaging of the wire confirmed the large intergranular Jc in the wire core.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Investigating 3S synergies to support infrastructure development and risk-informed methodologies for 3S by design

Suzuki, Mitsutoshi; Izumi, Yoshinori; Kimoto, Toru; Naoi, Yosuke; Inoue, Takeshi; Hoffheins, B.

IAEA-CN-184/64 (Internet), 8 Pages, 2010/11

In support of the 3S initiative, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been conducting detailed analyses of the R&D programs and cultures of each of the S areas to identify overlaps where synergism and efficiencies might be realized, to determine where there are gaps in the development of a mature 3S culture, and to coordinate efforts with other Japanese and international organizations. Lessons learned in these activities can be applied to developing more efficient and effective 3S infrastructures for incorporating into Safeguards by Design methodologies. In this presentation, a risk-informed approach regarding integration of 3S will be introduced. An initial examination of incident probability and postulated consequence analyses, which are tools familiar to the nuclear safety culture, will be applied to predict and evaluate inherent uncertainties of proliferation and security risks.
