Study of the $$N=32$$ and $$N=34$$ shell gap for Ti and V by the first high-precision multireflection time-of-flight mass measurements at BigRIPS-SLOWRI

The atomic masses of $$^{55}$$Sc, $$^{56,58}$$Ti, and $$^{56-59}$$V have been determined using the high-precision multireflection time-of-flight technique. The radioisotopes have been produced at RIKEN's Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) and delivered to the novel designed gas cell and multireflection system, which has been recently commissioned downstream of the ZeroDegree spectrometer following the BigRIPS separator. For $$^{56,58}$$Ti and $$^{56-59}$$V, the mass uncertainties have been reduced down to the order of 10 keV, shedding new light on the $$N=34$$ shell effect in Ti and V isotopes by the first high-precision mass measurements of the critical species $$^{58}$$Ti and $$^{59}$$V. With the new precision achieved, we reveal the nonexistence of the $$N=34$$ empirical two-neutron shell gaps for Ti and V, and the enhanced energy gap above the occupied $$nu$$p$$_{3/2}$$ orbit is identified as a feature unique to Ca. We perform new Monte Carlo shell model calculations including the $$nu$$d$$_{5/2}$$ and $$nu$$g$$_{9/2}$$ orbits and compare the results with conventional shell model calculations, which exclude the $$nu$$g$$_{9/2}$$ and the $$nu$$d$$_{5/2}$$ orbits. The comparison indicates that the shell gap reduction in Ti is related to a partial occupation of the higher orbitals for the outer two valence neutrons at $$N = 34$$.

The $$^{8}$$Li($$alpha$$,n)$$^{11}$$B reaction is regarded as the key reaction in the inhomogeneous big bang and in type-II supernova nucleosynthesis. Recently, the importance of this reaction to solving the $$^{7}$$Li problem, i.e., the inconsistency between the predicted and the observed primordial $$^{7}$$Li abundances, has also been noted. The most recent cross-section data published by our collaboration group in 2006 [H. Ishiyama et al., Phys. Lett. B 640, 82 (2006)] cover the 0.7- to 2.6-MeV energy region in the center-of-mass system. Here, we present additional data spanning the 0.45- to 1.80-MeV energy region. Thus, the predominant energy region for the big bang nucleosynthesis, corresponding to T$$_{9}$$ = 1 (where T$$_{9}$$ is a temperature unit equivalent to 109 K), is almost completely spanned by the previous [H. Ishiyama et al., Phys. Lett. B 640, 82 (2006)] and present results together.

We have developed an in situ and nanoscale Li diffusion measurement method in Li battery materials using an $$alpha$$-emitting radioactive $$^{8}$$Li tracer. In this method, while implanting a low-energy (8 keV) $$^{8}$$Li beam, the $$alpha$$ particles emitted at a small angle (10$$^{circ}$$) relative to the sample surface were detected as a function of time. Measurement for Li diffusion coefficients in a spinel phase LiMn$$_4$$O$$_4$$ (LMO) thin film has been started, which is used as an electrode in a Li ion secondary battery. An obvious Li diffusion effect in LMO was observed at the sample temperature of 623 K, and the further measurement is underway.

We have developed a nanoscale diffusion measurement method using an $$alpha$$-emitting radioactive $$^{8}$$Li tracer. In this method, while implanting a pulsed 8 keV $$^{8}$$Li beam, the $$alpha$$ particles emitted at a small angle (10$$^{circ}$$) relative to the sample surface were detected as a function of time. The method has been successfully applied to measuring lithium diffusion coefficients for an amorphous Li$$_{4}$$SiO$$_{4}$$-Li$$_{3}$$VO$$_{4}$$ (LVSO) thin film with a thickness of several hundred nanometers, demonstrating that the present method is sensitive to diffusion coefficients down on the order of 10$$^{-12}$$cm$$^{2}$$/s, which is more sensitive by about two orders of magnitude than that previously achieved.

The tilted-foil method for producing spin-polarized radioactive isotope beams has been studied for the application to nuclear physics and materials science, using the radioactive nucleus $$^8$$Li produced at the Tokai Radioactive Ion Accelerator Complex (TRIAC). We successfully produced polarization in a $$^8$$Li beam using 15 thin polystyrene foils fabricated especially for this purpose. A systematic study of the nuclear polarization as a function of the number of foils, beam energy, tilt angles and foil material has been performed, confirming the features of the tilted-foil technique experimentally. The contributions made to the nuclear polarization of $$^8$$Li nuclei by the atomic states was investigated.

不安定核ビームを用いた低エネルギー反応の研究に向けて、低圧力のHe/CO$$_{2}$$混合ガスで動作するガス検出器の開発を行った。高入射率に対応するため、400-$$mu$$m厚のgas electron multiplier(THGEM)を比例計数管として使用することし、最大毎秒10$$^{5}$$個の$$^{12}$$Cビームを用いてテストを行った。テスト結果からTHGEMを用いたガス検出器が高入射率に対応できることを確認した。

A novel beam-bunching technique has been implemented at a heavy-ion linear accelerator facility by installing a compact two-gap prebuncher and a multi-layer beam chopper. A pulsed beam of 2 to 4 MHz, having kinetic energy up to 1.1 MeV/u, is realized by bunching 2 keV/u continuous beams just upstream of the linac. Around 40% of the continuous beam particles are successively gathered in a single micro-bunch with a time width of around 15 ns in units of full-width at one-tenth maximum. The number of background beam particles over 250 ns just before the bunched beam is well suppressed to less than 10$$^{-4}$$ of the number of bunched particles. This technique has been adopted to generate intense $$alpha$$-particle beams for nuclear astrophysics experiments.

An isobaric analog resonance of $$^{69}$$Zn was studied by the resonance elastic scattering of $$p(^{68}Zn,p)$$ with a 5.5-MeV/nucleon $$^{68}$$Zn beam and a thick polyethylene target. The excitation function of the differential cross section of proton elastic scattering was measured around 0 degrees in the laboratory frame by the thick target inverse kinematics method. The angular momentum, and proton and total widths of the resonance assigned using an $$R$$-matrix calculation are in good agreement with earlier measurements performed using normal kinematics, demonstrating that the thick target inverse kinematics method is a useful tool for studying the single particle structures of neutron-rich nuclei.

原子力科学研究所タンデムブースター加速器からの重イオンビーム$$^{48}$$Ti, $$^{54}$$Cr, $$^{56}$$Fe, $$^{64}$$Ni, $$^{70}$$Znを薄膜標的$$^{208}$$Pbに照射し、172$$^{circ}$$, 168$$^{circ}$$, 162$$^{circ}$$に後方散乱される準弾性散乱断面積を測定した。入射エネルギーを1.5MeVごとに変えながら測定した励起関数を1階微分することにより、超重元素104-112番元素を合成する冷たい融合反応における融合障壁分布を実験的に導出した。これにより測定された融合障壁は、従来用いられてきた理論値より5-10MeV程度低いことがわかった。また障壁分布の形状は、接近時の励起効果を考慮したチャンネル結合計算結果と良い一致を示すことがわかった。最近、さらに重い反応系$$^{76}$$Ge, $$^{86}$$Kr+$$^{208}$$Pbについても実験を行い、同様の結果が得られた。

KEKCBは、18GHzの電子共鳴型(ECR)イオン源で、タンデムに設置された短寿命核分離加速実験装置(TRIAC)の一部として、上流で生成され質量分離された短寿命原子核の1+イオンを、ビーム軸上のECRプラズマに入射することで、多価のイオンへその場変換する装置である。これまでの開発研究によって、クリプトン,キセノン等のガス状元素やバリウム,インジウム等の非ガス状元素に対して、質量/電荷比が7以下の多価イオンにまで変換する効率を、それぞれ7%, 2%にまで向上することができた。また、短寿命な同位元素による測定と比較することで、この変換効率は、1秒程度の半減期を持つ同位元素に対しては、変わらないことを確かめた。従来見られていた出力ビーム中のバックグランドは、プラズマ壁及び電極の全アルミ化,高圧純水洗浄等により、10$$^{8}$$ppsから600ppsにまで落とすことができた。

A non-destructive and on-line diffusion tracing in Li ionic conductors has been successfully conducted by using the short-lived $$alpha$$-emitting radiotracer of $$^{8}$$Li. The radiotracers produced as an energetic and pulsed ion beam are implanted into the Li ionic conductor of NaTl-type intermetallic compounds ($$beta$$-LiAl, $$beta$$-LiGa, and $$beta$$-LiIn). The $$alpha$$-particles survived on their passage from the position emitted by the diffusing $$^{8}$$Li to the surface of the specimen are measured as a function of time. The diffusion coefficients of Li obtained for the NaTl-type intermetallic compounds with different Li compositions are quantitatively discussed in terms of the interaction between the structural defects in the specimen and Li.
