This paper presents a database of local flow parameters for upward adiabatic air-water two-phase flows in a vertical 6$$times$$6 rod bundle flow channel. The local void fraction, interfacial area concentration (IAC), bubble diameter and bubble velocity vector were measured by using a four-sensor optical probe. Based on an existing state-of-the-art four-sensor probe methodology with the characteristic to count small bubbles, IAC in this study was derived more reliably than those in the existing studies. In addition, bubble velocity vector could be measured by the methodology. Based on this database, flow characteristics were investigated. The area-averaged void fraction and IAC were compared with the predictions from the drift-flux model and the IAC correlations, respectively. The applicability of those to the rod bundle flow channel was evaluated.

A new collaborative research project for systematic treatments of radioactive liquid wastes containing various reagents generating in nuclear facilities was started from 2018 initiated by Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The project was named as STRAD (Systematic Treatments of RAdioactive liquid wastes for Decommissioning) project. Tentative targets to be studied under the project are aqueous and organic liquid wastes which have been generated by experiments and analyses in a reprocessing experimental laboratory of JAEA. Currently fundamental studies for treatments of the liquid wastes with complicated compositions are underway. In the STRAD project, process flow for treatment of ammonium ion involved in aqueous waste was designed though the inactive experiments, and decomposition of ammonium ion using catalysis will be carried out soon. Adsorbents for recovery of U and Pu from spent solvent were also developed. Demonstration experiments on genuine spent solvent is under planning.

The electronic structure of the unconventional superconductor $$mathrm{UTe_2}$$ was studied by resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (RPES) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with soft X-ray synchrotron radiation. The partial $$mathrm{U}~5f$$ density of states of $$mathrm{UTe_2}$$ were imaged by the $$mathrm{U}~4d$$ - $$5f$$ RPES and it was found that the $$mathrm{U}~5f$$ state has an itinerant character, but there exists an incoherent peak due to the strong electron correlation effects. Furthermore, an anomalous admixture of the $$mathrm{U}~5f$$ states into the $$mathrm{Te}~5p$$ bands was observed at a higher binding energy, which cannot be explained by band structure calculations. On the other hand, the band structure of $$mathrm{UTe_2}$$ was obtained by ARPES and its overall band structure were mostly explained by band structure calculations. These results suggest that the $$mathrm{U}~5f$$ states of $$mathrm{UTe_2}$$ have itinerant but strongly-correlated nature with enhanced hybridization with the $$mathrm{Te}~5p$$ states.

The magnetic order in the magnetic-fild-induced so-called A phase of cubic chiral antiferromagnet EuPtSi was investigated by resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) near the Eu $$L_{2}$$ edge. The high flux RXS signal under the magnetic field applied along [111] revealed the first and second order satellite magnetic reflections, indicating that the A phase is a triple-$$q$$ magnetic ordered state that is described by three propagation vectors lying in the plane normal to the magnetic field direction; $$q_1$$, $$q_2$$, and $$q_3$$. With the high resolution in the reciprocal space achieved in the RXS measurement, it is suggested that the triple-$$q$$ order strongly couples with the underlying crystal lattice. The triple-$$q$$ magnetic order is discussed in the context of a magnetic skyrmion lattice on which the geometrical frustration may play a crucial role.

In 2011, the ICRP recommended reducing an occupational equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye. Since then, there have been extensive discussions toward regulatory implementation of such new occupational dose limit. In Japan, the Radiation Council established a Subcommittee in July 2017 to discuss the feasibility of implementing the new occupational lens dose limit. In March 2018, the Radiation Council requested all relevant government ministries and agencies to take necessary actions toward implementation of the new occupational dose limit, considering a series of discussions made by the Subcommittee. According to the currently available information, the new occupational lens dose limit will be implemented into regulations in Japan, most likely in April 2021. Epidemiological and biological studies on radiation effects on the lens and studies on lens dose measurements have been conducted in Japan, some of which have been funded by the Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority. This paper provides an overview of the recent discussions toward regulatory implementation and the current status of the studies related to radiation exposure of the lens and its effect in Japan.

Thermochemical hydrogen production has attracted considerable interest as a clean energy solution to address the challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability. The thermochemical water-splitting iodine-sulfur (IS) process uses heat from nuclear or solar power and thus is a promising next-generation thermochemical hydrogen production method that is independent of fossil fuels and can provide energy security. This paper presents the current state of research and development of the IS process based on membrane techniques using solar energy at a medium temperature of 600$$^{circ}$$C. Membrane design strategies have the most potential for making the IS process using solar energy highly efficient and economical and are illustrated here in detail. Three aspects of membrane design proposed herein for the IS process have led to a considerable improvement of the total thermal efficiency of the process: membrane reactors, membranes, and reaction catalysts. Experimental studies in the applications of these membrane design techniques to the Bunsen reaction, sulfuric acid decomposition, and hydrogen iodide decomposition are discussed.
