Times Cited Count:23 Percentile:82.76(Astronomy & Astrophysics)Nuclear level density plays an important role in applications to nuclear energy and nuclear astrophysics, dominating neutron-capture cross sections. In this paper, we propose a new, practical and accurate method of estimating nuclear level density within the framework of the nuclear shell model, and show its feasibility and usefulness. This method is based on the idea that the level density is obtained by the number of eigenstates that is represented as a contour integral in the complex plane. We first confirm the feasibility of this method using a small system in which the exact eigenstates are available, and then calculate parity-dependent level density in Ni, which cannot be calculated with direct eigenstate counting. We succeed in reproducing the experimental result that the and level densities are almost identical in low-energy regions, which cannot be obtained with conventional methods of estimating level densities.

Times Cited Count:142 Percentile:98.07(Physics, Nuclear)We perform systematic calculations of nuclear moments and energy levels in neutron-rich Na isotopes with the Monte Carlo shell model by adopting a large model space consisting of the full and part of the orbits. The calculation well reproduces those observables. The result shows that the disappearance of the magic number starts already at and that the magicity completely disappears for the isotone Na. This is in sharp contrast to previous consensus that the magic number disappears at and beyond. This early onset of disappearance indicates that the shell gap considerably narrows in Na isotopes compared to stable nuclei near Ca.

Six reduced matrix elements for 5 low-lying states were derived from the analysis using the least-squares code GOSIA. The quadrupole moment of the 2 was newly obtained. The measured quadrupole moment and the values are consistent with large-scale shell-model calculations which give a systematic description of ,=,50 isotones.
