Rapid recharge and descent of thundercloud core producing gamma-ray glow

We report two gamma-ray glows observed on December 22, 2023, during a winter thunderstorm in Japan, using an array of four radiation detectors. The first glow, detected by one sensor, was quenched by a lightning discharge. The second glow appeared 2-3 minutes later and was tracked by three other detectors. Radar observations suggest both glows originated from the same thundercloud cell. However, the detection timing of the second glow was inconsistent with simple thundercloud movement, indicating temporal variations in intrinsic glow brightness. A three-dimensional lightning mapping observation suggests that a discharge activity depleted the electric field that generated the first glow, and that the electric field having produced the second glow has been rapidly recovered. In addition, the radar observations also detected a descent of the thundercloud core between the two glows, which may have developed an electrified region and the second glow enough to be observed by the detectors. Tracking gamma-ray glows is crucial for understanding electrified regions in thunderclouds and associated gamma-ray glows.

本発表では、2011年の福島第一原子力発電所事故で放出された放射性セシウム含有微粒子(CsMP)中のセシウムの化学状態を、高分解能X線吸収分光法(XANES)とマイクロX線蛍光($$mu$$-XRF)を用いて解析した。その結果、主にガラス中に溶解したセシウムと、内部空隙表面に濃縮したセシウムの2種が確認された。後者はもともと気体として存在し、溶けたガラスが冷えて固まる際に濃縮したと考えられる。これらの知見は、事故時のCsMP形成過程や今後の廃炉作業、安全評価に重要である。

その場中性子回折を用いたSUS310Sステンレス鋼の水素添加による強さ・伸び向上メカニズムの解明

Recent studies have shown that the addition of hydrogen to SUS310S stainless steel (Fe-24Cr-19Ni, mass%) simultaneously enhances both strength and ductility, indicating a phenomenon contrary to the conventional understanding of hydrogen embrittlement. In this study, we investigated the underlying mechanism through ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction experiments during tensile deformation using TAKUMI at the MLF of J-PARC. The results revealed that solid-solution strengthening by hydrogen plays the most significant role in improving the mechanical properties. Solute hydrogen atoms distort the lattice to suppress dislocation motion, thereby increasing the strength. The raised stress in the hydrogen charged sample enables the onset of deformation twinning at a smaller strain compared to the non-hydrogen charged sample. Consequently, the twinning-induced plasticity effect contributes more significantly to work hardening and the improvement of uniform elongation due to the solid-solution strengthening by hydrogen. These findings suggest a new pathway for the effective utilization of hydrogen in austenitic steels.

Effect of potassium doping on the electrical properties of stacked graphene layers

Effect of potassium (K) concentration on electrical properties of stacked graphene layers was investigated. Stacked graphene layers were fabricated by repeated wet transfer process using chemical vapor deposited (CVD) single layer graphene on copper foils. Two kinds of K concentration in potassium hydroxide (KOH) solutions were used to change the K concentration in the stacked graphene layers. Non-doped stacked graphene layers were also fabricated as reference. In synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoelectron spectra, peaks due to K and carbon (C) were obtained. It was found from the obtained peak intensities that K/C peak intensity ratio was increase with increasing of K concentration in KOH solution. No defect or damage in the stacked graphene layers during doping process using KOH solutions was not formed from results of Raman spectroscopy. Sheet resistance, sheet carrier density and carrier mobility were measured by means of Hall effect measurements. Carrier polarity was changed from hole to electron by K doping. Although the sheet carrier densities of lightly and heavily K-doped graphene layers were almost same, the highest carrier mobility was obtained for lightly K-doped graphene layers. Electrons are doped from K atoms to compensate for the naturally existing holes in the stacked graphene layers, and the excess electrons doped from K atoms in the conduction band, which were measured the sheet carrier density, contribute to carrier transport. However, the additional K atoms act as scattering centers and inhibit carrier transport, which explains the decrease in carrier density in the highly K-doped graphene layers.

Incorporating solute hydrogen into Fe-Cr-Ni-based austenitic stainless steels enhances both strength and ductility, providing a promising solution to hydrogen embrittlement by causing solid-solution strengthening and assisting deformation twinning. However, its impacts on the relevant lattice defects evolution (${it i.e.}$, dislocations, stacking faults, and twins) during deformation remains unclear. This study compared the tensile deformation behavior in an Fe-24Cr-19Ni (mass%) austenitic steel with 7600 atom ppm hydrogen-charged (H-charged) and without hydrogen-charged (non-charged) using ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction. Hydrogen effects on the lattice expansion, solid-solution strengthening, stacking fault probability, stacking fault energy, dislocation density, and strain/stress for twin evolution were quantitatively evaluated to link them with the macroscale mechanical properties. The H-charged sample showed improvements in yield stress, flow stress, and uniform elongation, consistent with earlier findings. However, solute hydrogen exhibited minimal influences on the evolution of dislocation and stacking fault. This fact contradicts the previous reports on hydrogen-enhanced dislocation and stacking fault evolutions, the latter of which can be responsible for the enhancement of twinning. The strain for twin evolution was smaller in the H-charged sample compared to the non-charged one. Nevertheless, when evaluated as the onset stress for twin evolution, there was minimal change between the two samples. These findings suggest that the increase in flow stress due to the solid-solution strengthening by hydrogen is a root cause of accelerated deformation twinning at a smaller strain, leading to an enhanced work-hardening rate and improved uniform elongation.

${it In situ}$ neutron diffraction study to elucidate hydrogen effect on the deformation mechanism in Type 310S austenitic stainless steel

Hydrogen embrittlement has long been an obstacle to the development of safe infrastructure. However, in contrast to hydrogen's embrittling effect, recent research has revealed that the addition of hydrogen improves both the strength and uniform elongation of AISI Type 310S austenitic stainless steel. A detailed understanding of how hydrogen affects the deformation mechanism of this steel could pave the way for the development of more advanced materials with superior properties. In the present study, ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction experiments were conducted on Type 310S steel with and without hydrogen-charged to investigate the effect of hydrogen on the deformation mechanism. In addition to the effect of solid-solution strengthening by hydrogen, the q-value, a parameter representing the proportion of edge and screw dislocations in the accumulated dislocations, was quantitatively evaluated using CMWP analysis on neutron diffraction patterns. The comparison of q-values between the hydrogen-charged and non-charged samples reveals that hydrogen has minimal effect on dislocation character in Type 310S steel.

To examine the elementary steps of the Rochow-M$"u$ller process, we subjected copper oxides, viz., Cu$$_2$$O(111) and the bulk Cu$$_2$$O precursor "29" -structure on Cu(111), to supersonic molecular beams (SSMB) of CH$$_3$$Cl. The SSMB energies range from 0.5-1.9 eV. We then employed X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) in conjunction with synchrotron radiation (SR) to determine the resulting adsorbed species present. We identified two reaction paths, viz., Reaction I and Reaction II, with one prevailing over the other depending on exposure conditions. Reaction I involves the dissociative adsorption of CH$$_3$$Cl. In Reaction II, CH$$_3$$Cl dissociates with Cl as the prevailing adsorbed species (higher than that of adsorbed carbonaceous species, as observed for Reaction I). For the incident energy and exposure conditions considered, we found Reaction II as the prevailing reaction path for CH$$_3$$Cl reaction on both Cu$$_2$$O(111) and the "29" -structure on Cu(111).

Electron transfer capability in atomic hydrogen reactions for imidazole groups bound to the insulating alkanethiolate layer on Au(111)

The charge transfer capability associated with chemical reactions at metal-organic interfaces was studied via the atomic H addition reaction for an imidazole-terminated alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayer (Im-SAM) film on Au(111) using near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS), work function measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The imidazolium cation is a stable species in liquids, therefore, it is pertinent to determine whether the hydrogenation reactions of the imidazole groups produce imidazolium cations accompanied by electron transfer to the Au substrate, even in the absence of solvate and/or counterions on the insulating alkanethiolate layer. The analyses indicated that the imidazolium moieties in Im-SAM formed during atomic H irradiation, and some of the imidazolium radicals became cations. Theoretical model calculations also revealed that the total energies and molecular orbital levels satisfied the imidazolium cation formation associated with electron transfer.

日本溶接協会CAF小委員会では、塑性拘束効果を考慮した破壊評価手法ガイドラインの策定を目指している。この評価手法では、脆性破壊を評価するためのBereminモデルと延性亀裂成長を評価するためのGTNモデルを用いる。そこで、これらの評価モデルの適用性を検証するため、CAF小委員会の参加機関によるベンチマーク解析が行われた。ベンチマーク解析は、各機関が有する有限要素解析コードを用い、2種類の低合金鋼(A及びB)の破壊試験に対して実施されてきた。本発表では、低合金鋼Bに対する解析結果を報告する。Bereminモデルにおいて、一般的なワイブル形状母数(${it m}$ = 10, 20, 30)を用いた場合、各機関で計算されたワイブル応力が概ね一致することを確認した。また、Toughness Scaling Modelに基づいて、塑性拘束度が異なる2種類の試験片を用いてワイブル形状母数${it m}$を算出した。算出されたワイブル形状母数${it m}$は解析機関によりばらつきはあったものの、最終的に算出されるワイブル応力は一致することを確認した。GTNモデルに関して、評価に用いるパラメータを1T-C(T)試験片の室温での荷重-変位関係に基づいて最適化した。最適化されたパラメータを用いてGTNモデルに基づき評価されたJ-R曲線が各機関で一致することを確認した。

CH$$_3$$Cl dissociation, CH$$_3$$ abstraction, and Cl adsorption from the dissociative scattering of supersonic CH$$_3$$Cl on Cu(111) and Cu(410)

To study the elementary steps in the Rochow-Muller process, we bombarded Cu(111) and Cu(410) with 0.7-1.9 eV supersonic molecular beams (SSMB) of CH$$_3$$Cl. We then identified the corresponding adsorbed species using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) in conjunction with synchrotron radiation (SR). We found Cl as the dominant adsorbed species (much higher than that of adsorbed carbonaceous species) coming from the dissociative scattering of CH$$_3$$Cl. We also found that the threshold kinetic energy of the reaction depends on the crystal surface orientation.

材料照射試験装置内の荷重制御装置の改良(受託研究)

JMTR(材料試験炉: Japan Materials Testing Reactor)では、2008年$$sim$$2013年の約5年をかけて材料照射試験装置を整備した。材料照射試験装置は、IASCC(照射誘起応力腐食割れ: Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking)評価研究に供するための装置である。この装置は主に炉内照射するキャプセルに軽水炉環境を模擬した高温高圧水を供給するための水環境調整装置や照射下においてキャプセル内で亀裂進展試験を行うための荷重制御装置等から構成されている。荷重制御装置は、コンパクトテンション(CT: Compact Tension)試験片に荷重負荷を与え、亀裂進展試験を行うための装置である。このCT試験片に荷重を負荷させる原理は、水環境調整装置を用いたキャプセル内の高温高圧水とその中に装荷される荷重負荷ユニットのベローズ内に供給するヘリウムボンベの荷重制御ガス圧力の圧力差でCT試験片に荷重をかけるものである。2013年にこの材料照射試験装置の調整運転を実施した。その際、ロードセル付荷重負荷ユニットを装填した試験容器を用いて、荷重制御装置の差圧と荷重の相関試験も実施した。この相関試験(最大負荷時差圧と最小負荷時差圧を往復する周期的な荷重負荷試験)において、荷重制御装置の配管抵抗性能による圧力変化速度の違いから、負荷時と除荷時の荷重変化速度が異なるという課題等が抽出され、この課題について2014年$$sim$$2015年にかけて改良を実施し、改良後の性能試験を実施して課題等が解決したことを確認した。本報告書では、材料照射試験装置の概要、2013年に実施した荷重測定試験で確認された課題等の抽出及び2014年$$sim$$2015年にかけて実施した課題解決のための荷重制御装置の改良並びに改良後の性能試験・操作手順についてまとめたものである。

Effect of hydrogen on evolution of deformation microstructure in low-carbon steel with ferrite microstructure

In this study, the deformation microstructure of hydrogen-charged ferritic-pearlitic 2Mn-0.1C steel was characterized using SEM-BSE, SEM-EBSD, TEM, and neutron diffraction. The microscopic mechanism of hydrogen-related quasi-cleavage fracture along the ${011}$ planes was also discussed. It was found that hydrogen increased the relative velocity of screw dislocations to edge dislocations, leading to a tangled dislocation morphology, even at the initial stage of deformation (strain = 0.03). In addition, the density of screw dislocations at the later stage of deformation (strain = 0.20) increased in the presence of hydrogen. Based on the experimental results, it is proposed that a high density of vacancies accumulated along ${011}$ slip planes by jog-dragging of screw dislocations, and coalescence of the accumulated vacancies led to the hydrogen-related quasi-cleavage fracture along the {011} slip planes.

Catalog of gamma-ray glows during four winter seasons in Japan

In 2015 the Gamma-Ray Observation of Winter Thunderstorms (GROWTH) collaboration launched a mapping observation campaign for high-energy atmospheric phenomena related to thunderstorms and lightning discharges. This campaign has developed a detection network of gamma rays with up to 10 radiation monitors installed in Kanazawa and Komatsu cities, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, where low-charge-center winter thunderstorms frequently occur. During four winter seasons from October 2016 to April 2020, in total 70 gamma-ray glows, minute-lasting bursts of gamma rays originating from thunderclouds, were detected. Their average duration is 58.9 sec. Among the detected events, 77% were observed in nighttime. The gamma-ray glows can be classified into temporally-symmetric, temporally-asymmetric, and lightning-terminated types based on their count-rate histories. An averaged energy spectrum of the gamma-ray glows is well fitted with a power-law function with an exponential cutoff, whose photon index, cutoff energy, and flux are 0.613 $$pm$$ 0.009, 4.68 $$pm$$ 0.04 MeV, and (1.013 $$pm$$ 0.003) $$times$$ 10$$^{-5}$$ erg cm$$^{-2}$$s$$^{-1}$$ (0.2-20.0 MeV), respectively. The present paper provides the first catalog of gamma-ray glows and their statistical analysis detected during winter thunderstorms in the Kanazawa and Komatsu areas.

Revisit of XPS studies of supersonic O$$_{2}$$ molecular adsorption on Cu(111); Copper oxides

X線光電子分光法(XPS)を用いて、バルクCu$$_{2}$$O(111)表面と0.5eVのO$$_{2}$$超音速分子線(SSMB)を用いて作製したCu(111)表面のタイプ8とタイプ29と呼ばれる二種類の酸化物に関するXPS分析を報告する。新しい構造モデルを提案するとともに、以前提案した[29]構造のモデルを確認した。酸化物構造の新しいモデルを提案するとともに、O1s XPSスペクトルに基づいて、Cu(111)上のタイプ29酸化物の既提案モデルを確認した。O1sスペクトルの検出角依存性から、ナノピラミッド型モデルがO 1sスペクトルの検出角依存性は、($$sqrt{3}$$X$$sqrt{3}$$)R30$$^{circ}$$ Cu$$_{2}$$O(111)ではナノピラミッドモデルがより好ましいことがわかった。また、O1s電子励起過程を報告する。

Benchmark analysis by Beremin model and GTN model in CAF subcommittee

In order to establish a guideline for fracture evaluation by considering plastic constraint in the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) region, the CAF (Constraint-Based Assessment of Fracture in Ductile-Brittle Transition Temperature Region) subcommittee has been launched in 2018 in the Japan Welding Engineering Society. In the committee, fracture tests are conducted using C(T), SE(B), and 50mm-thick flat plate with a surface flaw subjected to bending load or tensile load to verify fracture evaluation methods. Since simulation results are easily affected by analysis conditions, benchmark analysis is essential for the potential users of the guideline. Therefore, benchmark analyses are executed on brittle and ductile damages by Beremin and Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) models implemented in the finite element (FE) codes. The benchmark analyses are carried out in four steps; Step 0 is to confirm the output of FE codes in each member with the same input data and the same FE model. Step 1 is to confirm the result of Weibull stress analysis for C(T) specimens tested at -125$$^{circ}$$C. The Weibull parameter, m, was fixed in this step. At step 2, sensitivity analyses are conducted on Weibull stresses in different conditions. The outputs by the GTN model are also confirmed. At the final step, the fracture simulation will be run for flat plate specimens with less plastic constraint than the standard fracture toughness specimen. As the results of the benchmark analyses up to step 2, a significant difference is not observed in the Weibull stress computed by committee members with the same input data and FE model and it is confirmed that the effects of element type, nonlinear deformation theory employed in FE analysis. For the calculation of the Weibull parameter m by using the fracture toughness test results and the developed programs by committee members, the converged values of m show good agreement among them.

2019年4月「はやぶさ2」ミッションは、地球に近い炭素質の小惑星(162173)リュウグウの人工衝撃実験を成功させた。これは露出した地下物質を調査し、放射加熱の潜在的な影響をテストする機会を提供した。はやぶさ2の近赤外線分光器(NIRS3)によるリュウグウの地下物質の観測結果を報告する。発掘された材料の反射スペクトルは、表面で観測されたものと比較して、わずかに強くピークがシフトした水酸基(OH)の吸収を示す。これは、宇宙風化や放射加熱が最上部の表面で微妙なスペクトル変化を引き起こしたことを示している。ただし、このOH吸収の強度と形状は、表面と同様に、地下物質が300$$^{circ}$$Cを超える加熱を経験したことを示している。一方、熱物理モデリングでは、軌道長半径が0.344AUに減少しても、推定される掘削深度1mでは放射加熱によって温度が200$$^{circ}$$Cを超えて上昇しないことが示されている。これは、リュウグウ母天体が放射加熱と衝撃加熱のいずれか、もしくは両方により熱変化が発生したという仮説を裏付けている。

Interface atom mobility and charge transfer effects on CuO and Cu$$_{2}$$O formation on Cu$$_{3}$$Pd(111) and Cu$$_{3}$$Pt(111)

We bombarded Cu$$_{3}$$Pd(111) and Cu$$_{3}$$Pt(111) with a 2.3 eV hyperthermal oxygen molecular beam (HOMB) source, and characterized the corresponding (oxide) surfaces with synchrotron-radiation X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SR-XPS). At 300 K, CuO forms on both Cu$$_{3}$$Pd(111) and Cu$$_{3}$$Pt(111). When we increase the surface temperature to 500 K, Cu$$_{2}$$O also forms on Cu$$_{3}$$Pd(111), but not on Cu$$_{3}$$Pt(111). For comparison, Cu$$_{2}$$O forms even at 300 K on Cu(111). On Cu$$_{3}$$Au(111), Cu$$_{2}$$O forms only after 500 K, and no oxides can be found at 300 K. We ascribe this difference in Cu oxide formation to the mobility of the interfacial species (Cu/Pd/Pt) and charge transfer between the surface Cu oxides and subsurface species (Cu/Pd/Pt).

Development and operation of an electrostatic time-of-flight detector for the Rare RI storage Ring

An electrostatic time-of-flight detector named E-MCP has been developed for quick diagnostics of circulating beam and timing measurement in mass spectrometry at the Rare-RI Ring in RIKEN. The E-MCP detector consists of a conversion foil, potential grids, and a microchannel plate. Secondary electrons are released from the surface of the foil when a heavy ion hits it. The electrons are accelerated and deflected by 90$$^{circ}$$ toward the microchannel plate by electrostatic potentials. A thin carbon foil and a thin aluminum-coated mylar foil were used as conversion foils. We obtained time resolutions of 69(1) ps and 43(1) ps (standard deviation) for a $$^{84}$$Kr beam at an energy of 170 MeV/u when using the carbon and the aluminum-coated mylar foils, respectively. A detection efficiency of approximately 90% was obtained for both foils. The E-MCP detector equipped with the carbon foil was installed inside the Rare-RI Ring to confirm particle circulation within a demonstration experiment on mass measurements of nuclei around $$^{78}$$Ge produced by in-flight fission of uranium beam at the RI Beam Factory in RIKEN. Periodic time signals from circulating ions were clearly observed. Revolution times for $$^{78}$$Ge, $$^{77}$$Ga, and $$^{76}$$Zn were obtained. The results confirmed successful circulation of the short-lived nuclei inside the Rare-RI Ring.
