Detailed $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of the exotic neon isotope $$^{28}$$Ne has been performed using the one-neutron removal reaction from $$^{29}$$Ne. Based on an analysis of parallel momentum distributions, a level scheme with spin-parity assignments has been constructed for $$^{28}$$Ne and the negative-parity states are identified for the first time. The measured partial cross sections and momentum distributions reveal a significant intruder p-wave strength providing evidence of the breakdown of the N = 20 and N = 28 shell gaps. Only a weak, possible f-wave strength was observed to bound final states. Large-scale shell-model calculations with different effective interactions do not reproduce the large p-wave and small f-wave strength observed experimentally, indicating an ongoing challenge for a complete theoretical description of the transition into the island of inversion along the Ne isotopic chain.

A new kind of suspension liquid was developed by dispersing Ti nanoparticles (10 nm) in liquid Na, which was then determined by TEM (transmission electron microscopy) analysis. The volume fraction was estimated to be 0.0088 from the analyzed Ti concentration (2 at.%) and the densities of Ti and Na. This suspension liquid, Liquid Sodium containing nanoparticles of titanium (LSnanop), shows, despite only a small addition of Ti nanoparticles, many striking features, namely a negative deviation of 3.9% from the ideal solution for the atomic volume, an increase of 17% in surface tension, a decrease of 11% for the reaction heat to water, and the suppression of chemical reactivity to water and oxygen. The decrease in reaction heat to water seems to be derived from the existence of excess cohesive energy of LSnanop. The excess cohesive energy was discussed based on simple theoretical analyses, with particular emphasis on the screening effect. The suppression of reactivity is discussed with the relation to the decrease of heat of reaction to water or the excess cohesive energy, surface tension, the action as a plug of Ti oxide, negative adsorption on the surface of LSnanop, and percolation.

SET pulse-widths were measured as a function of LET by using pulse capture circuits and were simulated with mixed-mode 3-D device simulations. We found that the carrier recombination process dominates LET dependence of SET pulse-widths.

The second in-situ irradiation experiment using a mock-up (ORIENT-II, JMTR capsule Number: 99M-54J) with a tritium breeder (Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$) pebble bed in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR) was finished on Aug. 1, 2006. Consideration on the detaching procedure of the irradiated mock-up contaminated with tritium with pebble bed and a detaching test of this mock-up was carried out. The tritium removal properties were examined in the irradiated mock-up, the sweep gas tube, the protective tube and the junction box, for the decreasing of the tritium release to the area of detaching test. Melting/enclosed tests of sealing plug were also carried out for the prevention of tritium leakage from sweep gas lines of pebble bed. Then, the detaching test of the pebble bed was carried out. This report describes the results of tritium removal tests, examination of the detaching procedure, and the detaching test, as well as knowledge obtained from these tests and works.

Positronium (Ps) can be formed by a reaction of trapped electrons and free positrons at low temperatures in molecular solids. While Ps formation by Ore and spur process must be fast, Ps formation by trapped electrons and free positrons is possible even at later positron age. The evidence of this delayed Ps formation was obtained by age-momentum correlation measurement of electron-positron pair annihilation $$gamma$$-rays. In this work the $$S(t)$$ parameter curves measured with trapped electrons and no trapped electrons in polyethylene are interpreted by introducing possible positron reactions. Positrons that escape from Ps formation by the Ore and the spur processes have chance to form Ps with trapped electrons. This Ps formation competes with the positron localization resulting from the trapping between molecules or the weakly binding on molecules, ions, or radicals. Assuming the possibility of both the delayed Ps formation and delayed positron trapping and that S-parameters for ortho-Ps and free positrons are the same, we obtain a good fit to the observed time dependent S-parameter curves $$S(t)$$.

The Research Hot Laboratory (RHL) in Japan Atomic Research Institute (JAERI) was constructed in 1961, as the first one in JAPAN, to perform the examinations of irradiated fuels and materials. RHL with two floors and a basement consists of 10 heavy concrete cells, and 38 lead cells (20 lead cells at present). The RHL had been contributed to research program in JAERI. However, RHL is the one of target 'A middle-range decommissioning plan for the facility in Tokai Research Establishment' as the rationalization program for decrepit facilities in JAERI. Therefore, all PIEs had been finished in March 2003 and the dismantling works of hot cells have been started. The 18 lead cells had been dismantled. The examinations performed in RHL will be succeeded to the RFEF and the WASTEF. The partial area of RHL facility will be used for the temporary storage of un-irradiated fuel samples used for our previous research works and radioactive device generated in proton accelerator facility (called J-PARC).

The reactor control system of HTTR is composed of the reactor power control system, the reactor inlet coolant temperature control system, the primary coolant flow rate control system and so on. The reactor control system of HTTR achieves reactor power 30MW, reactor outlet coolant temperature 850$$^{circ}$$C, reactor inlet coolant temperature 395$$^{circ}$$C under the condition that primary coolant flow rate is fixed. In the Rise-to-Power Test, the performance test of the reactor inlet coolant temperature control system was carried out in order to confirm the control capability of this control system. This report shows the test results of performance test. As a result, the control parameters, which can control the reactor inlet coolant temperature stably during the reactor operation, were successfully selected. And it was confirmed that the reactor inlet coolant temperature control system has the capability of controlling the reactor inlet coolant temperature stably against any disturbances on the basis of operational condition of HTTR.

HTTR (High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor) was operated from May 6th, 2003 to June 18th, 2003 to obtain operation data in parallel loaded operation mode and in safety demonstration tests. Operated with the reactor power at 60% of the rated power on May 21st, HTTR was automatically scrammed by a signalof "Primary coolant flow rate of the Primary Pressurized Water Cooler (PPWC): Low". The cause of the shutdown was the primary gas circulator (A) automatically stopped. The primary coolant flow rate of the PPWC decresed and reached the scram set value due to the gas circulator stop. As a result of investigation, it became clear that the cause of the gas circulator stop was malfunction of an auxiliary relay which monitored electric power of a circuit breaker in power line of the gas circulator. The cause of malfunction was deterioration of the relay under high temperature condition because the relay was installed beside an electric part which was heated up by electricity.

The main components of a new beamline for surface and interface crystal structure determination at SPring-8 are briefly described. Stages for the beamline monochromator are modified for making an incident X-ray intensity more stable for surface X-ray experiments. Absolute photon flux densities were measured with an incident photon energy. A new ultrahigh vacuum system is introduced with preliminary X-ray measurements from an ordered oxygen on Pt(111) surface.

Rise-to-power test in the HTTR has been performed from April 23rd to June 6th in 2000 as phase 1 test up to 10MW, from January 29th to March 1st in 2001 as phase 2 test up to 20MW in the rated operation mode and from April 14th to June 8th in 2001 as phase 3 test up to 20MW in the high temperature test operation mode. Phase 4 test to achieve the thermal reactor power of 30MW started from October 23rd in 2001. On December 7th it was confirmed that the thermal reactor power reached to 30MW and the reactor outlet coolant temperature reached to 850$$^{circ}$$C. JAERI obtained the certificate of pre-operation test from MEXT because all the pre-operation tests by MEXT were passed successfully. From the test results of rise-up-power test up to 30MW, the performance of reactor and cooling system were confirmed, and it was confirmed that an operation of reactor facility could be performed safely. Some problems to be solved were found through tests. By means of solving them, the reactor operation with the reactor outlet coolant temperature of 950$$^{circ}$$C will be achievable.
