Nested antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in electron-doped CeCo$$_{1-x}$$Ni$$_{x}$$In$$_5$$

We investigate the electronic state of Ni-substituted CeCo$$_{1-x}$$Ni$$_x$$In$$_5$$ by nuclear quadrupole and magnetic resonance (NQR/NMR) techniques. The heavy fermion superconductivity below $$T_{rm c} = 2.3$$ K for $$x = 0$$ is suppressed by Ni substitutions, and $$T_{rm c}$$ reaches zero for $$x = 0.25$$. The $$^{115}$$In NQR spectra for $$x = 0.125$$ and 0.25 can be explained by simulating the electrical field gradient that is calculated for a virtual supercell with density functional theory. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $$1/T_1$$ indicates that Ni substitution weakens antiferromagnetic correlations that are not localized near the substituent but instead are uniform in space. The temperature ($$T$$) dependence of $$(T_1T)^{-1}$$ for $$x = 0.25$$ shows a maximum around $$T_{rm g} = 2$$ K and $$(T_1T)^{-1}$$ decreases toward almost zero when temperature is further reduced as if a gap might be opening in the magnetic excitation spectrum; however, the magnetic specific heat and the static magnetic susceptibility evolve smoothly through $$T_{rm g}$$ with a $$-ln T$$ dependence. The peculiar T dependence of $$(T_1T)^{-1}$$ and non-Fermi-liquid specific heat and susceptibility can be interpreted in a unified way by assuming nested antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in a quasi-two-dimensional electronic system.

Antiferromagnetism in a prototypical quantum critical metal CeCoIn$$_5$$ is known to be induced by slight substitutions of non-magnetic Zn atoms for In. In nominally 7% Zn substituted CeCoIn$$_5$$, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state coexists with heavy fermion superconductivity. Heterogeneity of the electronic states is investigated in Zn doped CeCoIn$$_5$$ by means of nuclear quadrupole and magnetic resonances (NQR and NMR). Site-dependent NQR relaxation rates $$1/T_1$$ indicate that the AFM state is locally nucleated around Zn substituents in the matrix of a heavy fermion state, and percolates through the bulk at the AFM transition temperature $$T_{rm N}$$. At lower temperatures, an anisotropic superconducting (SC) gap below the SC transition temperature $$T_{rm c}$$, and the SC state permeates through the AFM regions via a SC proximity effect. Applying an external magnetic field induces a spin-flop transition near 5 T, reducing the volume of the AFM regions. Consequently, a short ranged inhomogeneous AFM state survives and coexists with a paramagnetic Fermi liquid state at high fields.

Conceptual design of an abnormality sign determination system for the general control system of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility at J-PARC

For operating a spallation neutron source and a muon target safely and efficiently, a general control system (GCS) operates within Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF). GCS administers operation and interlock processes of many instruments under various operation status. Since the first beam injection in 2008, it has operated stably without any serious troubles for more than ten years. GCS has a data storage server storing operational data on status around target stations. It has functioned well to detect and investigate unusual situations by checking data in this server. For continuing stable operation of MLF in future, however, introduction of abnormality sign determination system (ASDS) will be necessary for picking up potential abnormalities of target stations caused by radiation damages, time-related deterioration and so on. It will judge abnormalities from slight state transitions of target stations based on analysis with various operational data throughout proton beams, target stations, and secondary beams during long-term operations. This report mentions present status of GCS, conceptual design of ASDS, and installation of an integral data storage server which can deal with various data for ASDS integrally.

The radioactivity of uranium-bearing waste contaminated by refined uranium increases with the production of its progeny on a long-term timescale. Therefore, the long-term safety concept of the near surface disposal of uranium-bearing waste is very important. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) examines disposal safety by controlling the average uranium radioactivity concentration in each section of disposal facility and performing safety assessment for very conservative assumptions.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been developing to design trench disposal facility with impermeable layers in order to dispose of miscellaneous waste. Geomembrane liners have a function that prevent seepage of leachant and collect the leachant. However, the geomembrane liners do not necessarily provide the expected performance due to damage generated when heavy equipment contacts with the liner. Therefore, we studied the impermeable layers having high performance of preventing seepage of leachant including radioactivity taking into account characteristics of low permeable materials and effect of multiple layer structure. As results, we have evaluated that the composite layers composed by a drainage layer, geomembrane liners and a low permeable layer are most effective structure to prevent seepage of leachant. Taking into account disposal of waste including cesium, we also considered zeolite containing sheets for adsorption of cesium were installed in the impermeable layers.

The twenty first meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Source (ICANS-XXI) was held at Ibaraki Prefectural Culture Center in Mito from 29 September to 3 October 2014. It was hosted by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) and Comprehensive Research Organization for Science and Society (CROSS). In the meeting, new science and technology in the new era with the high power neuron sources were discussed in mostly "workshop style" sessions. In each session, various kinds of issues related to not only the hardware, but also the software and even radiation safety were discussed with the keyword of "INTERFACE". More than 200 Papers were presented in the meeting and 72 contributed papers are compiled in the proceedings.

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Cairo pentagon lattice is investigated by the numerical diagonalization. As a result, it was found that an orthogonal dimer, the disorder, and the ferrimagnetic states appear depending on the ratio of the two exchange interactions.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency surveyed the reference cases for the disposal of uranium bearing waste in low activity concentration as the contents of their own category 2 waste disposal facility for the Research and Development Activities. We reviewed the concepts mentioned in IAEA and ICRP documents, reference cases of uranium bearing waste disposal in selected countries (USA, Canada, UK, France and Sweden), and the disposal styles of long-lived radioactive waste were summarized, and the action items for application to the disposal system of our country was arranged. The disposal facilities in selected countries can be classified into 2 types with the length of performance assessment period for intruder scenario. They are long term assessment type and short term assessment type. It seems that the disposal system construction in category 2 waste disposal is the most realistic since there are many precedence examples of each country. Correspondence of 2 types of these disposal facilities is useful as a reference case.

Edge modes in the intermediate-D and large-D phases of the S=2 quantum spin chain with XXZ and on-site anisotropies

The S=2 quantum spin chain with the XXZ anisotropy and the on-site anisotropy is investigated by the numerical diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group analysis. As a result, it was found that an edge mode appears in the intermediate-D phase, while not in the large-D phase.

We study the $$S$$ = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the Cairo pentagon lattice by the numerical diagonalization. We tune the ratio of two antiferromagnetic interactions coming from two kinds of in equivalent sites in this lattice, examining the magnetization process; particular attention are focused on the one-third height of the saturation. We find that a quantum phase transition occurs at a specific value of the ratio and that a magnetization plateau appears in the vicinity of the transition.

Uranium bearing waste in Japan is not included in Category-2 radioactive waste disposal in NSCRG: F-RW-I.02 (published in August 2010, NSC Japan). Therefore, disposal of uranium bearing waste should be considered in institutionalization. In charge of the consideration, it is thought effective to refer to the proven tactics of the uranium waste disposal in overseas and the information on a safe regulatory system. Since the view of regulations and enterprises in this field are progressing day by day, renewal of the existing information of disposal of the uranium waste in each country is required. Furthermore, amendment of the U.S. federal rule aiming at safety disposal of depleted uranium is in progress. It is important to collect and arrange the latest information on the two above-mentioned points. Therefore, it visited the disposal responsible organization and regulatory agency of the disposal site of the uranium waste in the U.S. and Canada, and held institution investigations and interviews paying attention to the following four items: (1) "amendment of the U.S. 10CFR61", (2) "Safety evaluation of uranium bearing waste", (3) "Disposal site design", (4) "Stakeholder involvement".

Influence of Great East Japan Earthquake on neutron source station in J-PARC

This report investigates the behavior, damage and restoration of a neutron source station of the MLF at the Great East Japan Earthquake and verified the safety design for emergency accidents in the neutron source station. In the MLF, after an occurrence of the Earthquake, strong quakes were detected at the instruments, the external power supply was lost, all of the circulators shut down automatically, and the hydrogen gas was released. The leakages of mercury, hydrogen and radio-activation gases did not occur. While, the quakes made gaps between the shield blocks and ruptured external pipe lines by subsidence around the building. But significant damages to the components were not found though the pressure drop of compressed air lines influenced on a target trolley lock system and so on. These results substantiated the validity of the safety design for emergency accidents in the source station, and suggested several points of improvement.

This report investigates behaviors and damages of each component in a neutron target station of the MLF at the J-PARC at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). At the date of the GEJE, in the MLF, strong quakes were detected at several instruments, an external power supply were lost, all of the circulation systems were shut down automatically, and a hydrogen gas was released as planned. Leakage of activation liquids and gases did not occur. While, the quakes made gaps between shield blocks and ruptured external pipe lines for air and water by subsidence. But significant damages on the components of the target station were not found though a loss of compressed air supply affected lock systems with air cylinders and pneumatic operation values. These results substantiated a validity of safety design on the target station for emergency accidents.

Elastic-plastic connection model describing dynamic interactions of component connections

Design evaluation of nuclear facilities would be facilitated by a numerical evaluation system that can evaluate both global and local behaviors under severe seismic loading. A critical part of such a system is the numerical model describing the dynamic physical interactions among component connections, called the elastic-plastic connection model. Here we propose such a model and use it to simulate dynamic interactions using real earthquake and plant data from the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) of the JAEA. We focus on joints connecting the component supports and the building walls, which generally involve fixed/pinned boundary conditions. The results confirmed a reduction in the vibration response and a change in the natural frequencies of individual components under large virtual earthquake loading, which are considered to have resulted from dynamic interactions between the joints connecting the component supports and the building walls.

Using mainly numerical method, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the $$S$$=2 quantum spin chain with on-site and $$XXZ$$ anisotropies. As a result we found a new phase between the well-known Haldane phase and the large-$$D$$ phase. The precise phase diagram is presented by the level spectroscopy method.
