Reproduction in Domestic Animals, 56(3), p.484 - 497, 2021/03

We have established an archive system of livestock and wild animals from the surrounding ex-evacuation zone. Wildlife within the alert zone have been exposed to low-dose-rate (LDR) radiation for a long and continuous time. In this study, we analysed the morphological characteristics of the testes and in vitro fertilization (IVF) capacity of cryopreserved sperm of raccoons from the ex-evacuation zone of the FDNPP accident. This study revealed that the chronic and LDR radiation exposure associated with the FDNPP accident had no adverse effect on the reproductive characteristics and functions of male raccoons.

Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and by law of Ibaraki Prefecture), the effluent control of liquid waste discharged from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been performed. This report describes the effluent control results of the liquid waste in the fiscal year 2019. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other nuclear fuel material usage facilities were much lower than the limits authorized by the above regulations.

The ${{it in vivo}}$ dosimeter system is capable of real-time, accurate, and precise measurement under stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) conditions. The probe is smaller than a conventional dosimeter, has excellent spatial resolution, and can be valuable in SBRT with a steep dose distribution over a small field. The developed PSP dosimeter system appears to be suitable for in vivo SBRT dosimetry.

An in-flight separator, BigRIPS, at RIBF in RIKEN provides each experiment with specific nuclides separated from many nuclides produced by projectile fragmentation or in-flight fission. In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with $$^{78}$$Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around $$^{67}$$Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

Searching for effective pathways for the production of proton- and neutron-rich isotopes through an optimal combination of reaction mechanism and energy is one of the main driving forces behind experimental and theoretical nuclear reaction studies as well as for practical applications in nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste. We report on a study on incomplete fusion induced by deuteron, which contains one proton and one neutron with a weak binding energy and is easily broken up. This reaction study was achieved by measuring directly the cross sections for both proton and deuteron for $$^{107}$$Pd at 50 MeV/u via inverse kinematics technique. The results provide direct experimental evidence for the onset of a cross-section enhancement at high energy, indicating the potential of incomplete fusion induced by loosely-bound nuclei for creating proton-rich isotopes and nuclear transmutation of radioactive waste.

Compact neutron sources have been used as various diagnostics such as a neutron diffraction, neutron resonant analysis, and neutron radiography. The developments of the neutron detectors are essential for all of these applications, while the techniques are strongly dependent on the neutron energy and the aim of the measurement. This paper reviews neutron detection techniques pertinent to promote compact neutron source uses. Along with general neutron detection systems with conventional counters for slow neutrons, we have highlighted detectors for high energy neutrons with high time resolution and high sensitivity which could be applied in a laser-driven compact neutron source.

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 8, p.012004_1 - 012004_5, 2015/09

The existence of a mu-e conversion process is expected by some theories beyond the standard model in particle physics, but has not been discovered yet due to its low probability. The DeeMe experiment, proposed at J-PARC Material Life Science Facility (MLF), is planned to find the mu-e conversion process on a Muon production target. In order to distinguish mu-e event signal from a background, the number of a proton that comes after hundreds of nanoseconds from the main beam should be less than one per one hour during the DeeMe experiment. Therefore we designed a new measurement system to confirm low background level. A simulation result showed that the new system could detect such delayed proton.

Electrical resistivity measurements of single crystalline $$alpha$$-Mn under high pressure

Miyake, Atsushi*; Kanemasa, Tsunehiro*; Yagi, Ryohei*; Kagayama, Tomoko*; Shimizu, Katsuya*; Haga, Yoshinori; Onuki, Yoshichika

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 310(2, Part1), p.e222 - e224, 2007/03

We have measured electrical resistivity of single crystalline $$alpha$$-manganese ($$alpha$$-Mn) under high pressure. $$alpha$$-Mn shows an antiferromagnetic ordering at $$T_{rm N}$$ = 95 K and has four inequivalent crystal sites with different magnetic moments. With increasing pressure, $$T_{rm N}$$ shifts toward lower temperature. At higher pressure, the shape of anomaly at $$T_{rm N}$$ changes to a kink-like one, which may indicate different magnetic ordering from that at lower pressure. Such a difference between lower and higher pressure regions is considered to be caused by the four inequivalent magnetic moments in $$alpha$$-Mn. At 1.9 GPa, the boundary of the ordered phases, we observe a sudden decrease of the residual resistivity and a peak of the A-coefficient of $$T^2$$-term of the resistivity.
