Assessment of probability of aircraft crashes for Nuclear Science Research Institute

Owing to the publication of the latest data about aircraft crashes by Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), it was necessary to re-evaluate the probabilities of aircraft crashes for Nuclear Science Research Institute (NSRI). By using of the assessment method provided in "Regulatory Guide of the Assessment Standard for Probability of Airplane Crash on a Nuclear Power Reactor Facility", we re-evaluated the probabilities of aircraft crashes against the nuclear facilities in NSRI. As a result of the evaluations, the sum of the probabilities of aircraft crashes against Waste Treatment Facilities (maximum probability among all nuclear facilities in NSRI) is 5.68$$times$$10$$^{-8}$$ (times/(reactor $$cdot$$ year)) which is lower than 10$$^{-7}$$ (times/(reactor $$cdot$$ year)) that is the assessment criterion whether aircraft crashes is considered to be "anticipated external human induced events" in design basis or not.

Strong decays of singly heavy baryons from a chiral effective theory of diquarks

A chiral effective theory of scalar and vector diquarks is formulated, which is based on $$SU(3)_Rtimes SU(3)_L$$ chiral symmetry and includes interactions between scalar and vector diquarks with one or two mesons. We find that the diquark interaction term with two mesons breaks the $$U(1)_A$$ and flavor $$SU(3)$$ symmetries. To determine the coupling constants of the interaction Lagrangians, we investigate one-pion emission decays of singly heavy baryons $$Qqq$$ ($$Q = c$$, $$b$$ and $$q = u$$, $$d$$, $$s$$), where baryons are regarded as diquark-heavy-quark two-body systems. Using this model, we present predictions of the unobserved decay widths of singly heavy baryons. We also study the change of masses and strong decay widths of singly heavy baryons under partial restoration of chiral symmetry.

JRR-3 Process control system is used from the initial criticality (1990) after remodeling JRR- 3 as equipment used for monitoring and control of flow rate, temperature, pressure, water level, etc. of coolant and operation of nuclear reactor equipment, and it became necessary to renew as the aging progressed and spare parts could not be obtained sufficiently. Upon renewal, from the viewpoint of ensuring conservation of the core such as decay heat removal and minimizing the impact on reactor users and minimizing costs, it is important not to stop long-term reactor shutdown we planned to divide it into three stages and make it on a continuous basis. This report summarizes the renewal plan and renewal work divided into three stages.

Nested antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and non-Fermi-liquid behavior in electron-doped CeCo$$_{1-x}$$Ni$$_{x}$$In$$_5$$

We investigate the electronic state of Ni-substituted CeCo$$_{1-x}$$Ni$$_x$$In$$_5$$ by nuclear quadrupole and magnetic resonance (NQR/NMR) techniques. The heavy fermion superconductivity below $$T_{rm c} = 2.3$$ K for $$x = 0$$ is suppressed by Ni substitutions, and $$T_{rm c}$$ reaches zero for $$x = 0.25$$. The $$^{115}$$In NQR spectra for $$x = 0.125$$ and 0.25 can be explained by simulating the electrical field gradient that is calculated for a virtual supercell with density functional theory. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $$1/T_1$$ indicates that Ni substitution weakens antiferromagnetic correlations that are not localized near the substituent but instead are uniform in space. The temperature ($$T$$) dependence of $$(T_1T)^{-1}$$ for $$x = 0.25$$ shows a maximum around $$T_{rm g} = 2$$ K and $$(T_1T)^{-1}$$ decreases toward almost zero when temperature is further reduced as if a gap might be opening in the magnetic excitation spectrum; however, the magnetic specific heat and the static magnetic susceptibility evolve smoothly through $$T_{rm g}$$ with a $$-ln T$$ dependence. The peculiar T dependence of $$(T_1T)^{-1}$$ and non-Fermi-liquid specific heat and susceptibility can be interpreted in a unified way by assuming nested antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in a quasi-two-dimensional electronic system.

Doubly heavy tetraquarks in a chiral-diquark picture

Energy spectrum of doubly heavy tetraquarks, $$T_{QQ}$$ ($$QQ bar{q} bar{q}$$ with $$Q = c, b$$ and $$q = u, d, s$$), is studied in the potential chiral-diquark model. Using the chiral effective theory of diquarks and the quark-diquark-based potential model, the $$T_{bb}$$, $$T_{cc}$$, and $$T_{cb}$$ tetraquarks are described as a three-body system composed of two heavy quarks and an antidiquark. We find several $$T_{bb}$$ bound states, while no $$T_{cc}$$ and $$T_{cb}$$ (deep) bound state is seen. We also study the change of the $$T_{QQ}$$ tetraquark masses under restoration of chiral symmetry.

The disposal of radioactive waste from the research facility need to calculate from the radioactivity concentration that based on variously nuclear fuels and materials. In Japan Atomic Energy Agency Oarai Research and Development Institute, the study on considering disposal is being advanced among the facilities which generate radioactive waste as well as the facilities which process radioactive waste. This report summarizes a study result in FY2020 about the evaluation method to determine the radioactivity concentration in radioactive waste on Oarai Research and Development Institute.

Heavy baryon spectrum with chiral multiplets of scalar and vector diquarks

Chiral effective theory of scalar and vector diquarks is formulated according to the linear sigma model. The main application is to describe the ground and excited states of singly heavy baryons with a charm or bottom quark. Applying the potential quark model between the diquark and the heavy quark ($$Q=c, b$$), we construct a heavy-quark-diquark model. The spectra of the positive- and negative-parity states of $$Lambda_Q$$, $$Sigma_Q$$, $$Xi^{(')}_Q$$ and $$Omega_Q$$ are obtained. The masses and interaction parameters of the effective theory are fixed partly from the lattice QCD data and also from fitting low-lying heavy baryon masses. We find that the negative parity excited states of $$Xi_Q$$ (flavor $$bar{bf 3}$$) are different from those of $$Lambda_Q$$, because of the inverse hierarchy of the pseudoscalar diquark. On the other hand, $$Sigma_Q, Xi'_Q$$ and $$Omega_Q$$ (flavor $${bf 6}$$) baryons have similar spectra. We compare our results of the heavy-quark-diquark model with experimental data as well as the quark model.

Survival probabilities of charmonia as a clue to measure transient magnetic fields

We investigate time evolution of $$S$$-wave charmonium populations under a time-dependent homogeneous magnetic field and evaluate survival probabilities of the low-lying charmonia to the goal of estimating the magnetic field strength at heavy-ion collisions. Our approach implements mixing between different spin eigenstates and transitions to radially excited states. We show that the survival probabilities can change even by an extremely short magnetic field. Furthermore, we find that the survival probabilities depend on the initial spin states. We propose the sum of the survival probabilities over spin partners as an observable insensitive to the initial states. We also find that the sum can be approximately given as a function of $$sigma B_0^2$$ with a duration time $$sigma$$ and the maximum strength of the magnetic field $$B_0$$.

Rapid analysis of $$^{90}$$Sr in bone and tooth samples of cattle were achieved by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) coupled with mass shift and solid phase extraction techniques. Limit of detection (LOD) in the ICP-MS measurement of 0.1 g samples was lower than that of the radioactivity measurement. Analytical time of the ICP-MS method was reduced from 20 days to 11 hours, compared with the radiometric method. Therefore, the ICP-MS method can be rapid and useful procedure of $$^{90}$$Sr in small bone and tooth samples derived from terrestrial animals.

Antiferromagnetism in a prototypical quantum critical metal CeCoIn$$_5$$ is known to be induced by slight substitutions of non-magnetic Zn atoms for In. In nominally 7% Zn substituted CeCoIn$$_5$$, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) state coexists with heavy fermion superconductivity. Heterogeneity of the electronic states is investigated in Zn doped CeCoIn$$_5$$ by means of nuclear quadrupole and magnetic resonances (NQR and NMR). Site-dependent NQR relaxation rates $$1/T_1$$ indicate that the AFM state is locally nucleated around Zn substituents in the matrix of a heavy fermion state, and percolates through the bulk at the AFM transition temperature $$T_{rm N}$$. At lower temperatures, an anisotropic superconducting (SC) gap below the SC transition temperature $$T_{rm c}$$, and the SC state permeates through the AFM regions via a SC proximity effect. Applying an external magnetic field induces a spin-flop transition near 5 T, reducing the volume of the AFM regions. Consequently, a short ranged inhomogeneous AFM state survives and coexists with a paramagnetic Fermi liquid state at high fields.

A Review of quarkonia under strong magnetic fields

We review the properties of quarkonia under strong magnetic fields. The main phenomena are (i) mixing between different spin eigenstates, (ii) quark Landau levels and deformation of wave function, (iii) modification of $$bar{Q}Q$$ potential, and (iv) the motional Stark effect. For theoretical approaches, we review (i) constituent quark models, (ii) effective Lagrangians, (iii) QCD sum rules, and (iv) holographic approaches.

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

Two-step-pressurization method in pulsed electric current sintering of MoO$$_{3}$$ for production of $$^{99m}$$Tc radioactive isotope

Pulsed electric current sintering of molybdenum trioxide (MoO$$_{3}$$) was carried out by one- and two-step pressuring methods for fabrication of irradiation target using production of $$^{99}$$Mo and $$^{rm 99m}$$Tc nuclear medicine. At 550$$^{circ}$$C by the two-step pressurizing method, a relative density of 93.1% was obtained while, by the one-step pressurization method, the relative density was 76.9%. Direct sample temperature measurements were conducted by inserting a thermocouple in a punch. By the two-step pressurizing method, the sample temperature was higher than that by the one-step pressurizing method even almost the same die temperature. From voltage and current waveforms, it was thought that the conductivity of the sample increased by the two-step pressurizing method to increase the sample temperature and the relative density. The two-step pressurization method enables us to prepare dense targets at a low temperature from recycled and coarse-grained $$^{98}$$Mo enriched MoO$$_{3}$$ powder.

We study strong and radiative decays of excited singly heavy baryons using an effective chiral Lagrangian based on the diquark picture. The effective Lagrangian contains a $$U_A(1)$$ anomaly term, which is found to suppress the decay width of $$Lambda_Q(1/2^-) to Lambda_Q(1/2^+)eta$$.

Hadronic Paschen-Back effect in charmonium

We find a novel phenomenon induced by the interplay between a strong magnetic field and finite orbital angular momenta in hadronic systems, which is analogous to the Paschen-Back effect observed in the field of atomic physics. This effect allows the wave functions to drastically deform. We discuss anisotropic decay from the deformation as a possibility to measure the strength of the magnetic field in heavy-ion collision at LHC, RHIC and SPS, which has not experimentally been measured. As an example we investigate charmonia with finite orbital angular momentum in a strong magnetic field. We calculate the mass spectra and mixing rate. To obtain anisotropic wave functions, we apply the cylindrical Gaussian expansion method, where the Gaussian bases to expand the wave functions have different widths along transverse and longitudinal directions in the cylindrical coordinate.
