The high-field multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR), the magnetization, and the specific heat of single crystals of BaCoVO (a quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet with ) were measured in two different transverse magnetic fields: and . A softening of the lowest ESR mode was observed near the saturation field of the magnetization around 40 T in , whereas it occurs around 10 T in , far below the saturation field. These observations were reproduced by numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization group methods, including the staggered magnetic fields induced by a uniform external magnetic field and the interchain magnetic exchange interaction. We found that the directional dependence of the lowest mode originates mainly from the remarkable angular dependence of the induced magnetic field. The interchain interaction is also quantitatively important for reproducing the experimental results. The directional dependence of the lowest mode is demonstrated by the particle-hole excitation of spinons using the Jordan-Wigner transformation.

Extraction mechanism of lanthanide ions into silica-based microparticles studied by single microparticle manipulation and microspectroscopy

Single porous silica microparticles coated with styrene-divinylbenzene polymer (SDB) impregnated with octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) were injected into an aqueous 3 mol/L nitric acid solution containing trivalent lanthanide (Ln(III)), as a high-level liquid waste model, using the microcapillary manipulation-injection technique; and the extraction rate of Ln(III), as an Ln(III)-CMPO complex, into the single microparticles was measured by luminescence microspectroscopy. The extraction rate significantly depended on the Ln(III), CMPO, or NO concentration, and was analyzed in terms of diffusion in the pores of the microparticles and complex formation of Ln(III). The results indicated that the rate-determining step in Ln(III) extraction was the diffusion in the pore solution of the microparticles.

Neutron total and capture cross sections of Am have been measured with a new data acquisition system and a new neutron transmission measurement system installed in Accurate Neutron Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI) at Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The neutron total cross sections of Am were determined by using a neutron time-of-flight method in the neutron energy region from 4 meV to 2 eV. The thermal total cross section of Am was derived with an uncertainty of 2.9%. A pulse-height weighting technique was applied to determine neutron capture yields of Am. The neutron capture cross sections were determined by the time-of-flight method in the neutron energy region from the thermal to 100 eV, and the thermal capture cross section was obtained with an uncertainty of 4.1%. The evaluation data of JENDL-4.0 and JEFF-3.2 were compared with the present results.

Research and development for accuracy improvement of neutron nuclear data on minor actinides

A nuclear data project entitled Research and development for Accuracy Improvement of neutron nuclear data on Minor ACtinides (AIMAC) is being performed in Japan. The objective of the project is to improve accuracy of neutron nuclear data for minor actinides and some fission products, which is required for developing innovative nuclear system transmuting these nuclei. Following research items have been conducted to achieve the objective: (1) Measurements of thermal neutron capture cross-sections by activation methods, (2) High-precision quantifications of shielded sample amounts used for TOF measurement, (3) Resonance parameter determinations at J-PARC/ANNRI and KURRI/LINAC, (4) Extension of capture cross sections to high energy neutrons at J-PARC/ANNRI, (5) High quality evaluation based on iterative communication with experimenters. The achievement of the project is presented.

Measurement of the Se(, n) cross section and uncertainty evaluation of the Se(n, ) cross section

We precisely measured the (, n) cross section for Se by developing a spectroscopic method utilizing Laser Compton-Scattering -rays. Moreover, the Se(n, ) Se cross section was deduced using the statistical model calculation code CCONE with -ray strength functions adjusted to reproduce the (, n) cross sections for Se and the even Se isotopes Se, Se and Se. The reliability of the Se(n, ) Se cross section calculated by CCONE with the adjusted -ray strength function was evaluated by comparing available experimental (n, ) cross sections for stable Se isotopes and those calculated by CCONE with the adjusted -ray strength function. The result provides fundamental data for the study of nuclear transmutation for the long-lived fission product of Se.

In order to improve the data accuracy of neutron-capture cross sections of minor actinides (MAs) and long-lived fission products (LLFPs), a new experimental instrument named "Accurate Neutron-Nucleus Reaction measurement Instrument (ANNRI)" has been constructed in the Materials and Life science experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), and measurements of neutron-capture cross sections of MAs, LLFPs and some stable isotopes with high intensity pulsed neutrons have been started. The analyses for Cm, Cm, Am and Np were finished; those for I, Pd, Tc, Zr and some stable isotopes are in progress. These results will make significant contributions in the field of developing innovative nuclear systems.

JAEA procures all superconductors for central solenoid (CS) in the ITER project. The cable is inserted into a conduit and compacted with it. During the insertion, the number of the rotation at the point () of the TF cable increased linearly to 50 against the inserted cable length (). At first, of the CS cable also increased linearly by of 150 m. However, the increasing rate declined and the became constant to 30 at 600 m. During the compaction, the number of the rotation at the tail () of the CS cable increased linearly to 69 against the compacted cable length (). It is important to measure not only but also because the rotation affects the twist pitch of the cable (). After manufacturing the CS conductor, an X-ray transmission imaging made clear the along the whole length of the conductor for the first time. The peaked at the point; thus, a conductor sample should be taken there to investigate the effect of the elongation on the conductor performance.
