Science of heavy and superheavy elements (nuclear physics); Experimental studies on shell structure of superheavy nuclei

Asai, Masato

Radioisotopes, 67(6), p.291 - 298, 2018/06

Stability and limit of existence essentially depend on nuclear shell structure. It is theoretically predicted that stable doubly-closed-shell spherical superheavy nuclei should exist around the region of the proton number 114 to 126 and the neutron number 172 to 184, although their locations and degree of stability have not been established because of large variety of theoretical predictions. On the other hand, recent advances on experimental techniques have made it possible to accumulate experimental data concerning the shell structure of superheavy nuclei, such as half-lives and nuclear masses. In addition, some pioneering experiments have been performed to directly establish the level structure of superheavy nuclei through spectroscopic methods. This paper introduces the current status of experimental studies on nuclear shell structure of superheavy nuclei.

We perform systematic calculations of nuclear moments and energy levels in neutron-rich Na isotopes with the Monte Carlo shell model by adopting a large model space consisting of the full $$sd$$ and part of the $$pf$$ orbits. The calculation well reproduces those observables. The result shows that the disappearance of the $$N=20$$ magic number starts already at $$N=18$$ and that the magicity completely disappears for the $$N=19$$ isotone $$^{30}$$Na. This is in sharp contrast to previous consensus that the magic number disappears at $$N=20$$ and beyond. This early onset of disappearance indicates that the $$N=20$$ shell gap considerably narrows in Na isotopes compared to stable nuclei near $$^{40}$$Ca.

Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (PNC) has been developing groundwater reserch instruments in order to characterize hydraulic and geochemical environments in the deep underground. As part of this development programme, a support system was developed in 1996 to conduct groundwater investigations efficiently. This system, called the PNC Mobile Investigation System, consists of 5 units : a data acquisition and analysis unit, a maintenance unit, a hoisting unit, a cable drum for hydraulic tests (Type I), and a cable drum for groundwater sampling (Type II). The system is the following features: (1)Groundwater investigation is possible without a drill machine and rig. (2)Long term investigation is possible without housing facilities and utilities. (3)Maintenance of instruments is possible in the field. (4)Control units, such as the computer, are well protected from the external environment. (5)Groundwater analysis is possible in the field. (6)Recovery of instruments stuck in the borehole is possible using the emergency hoisting unit. The first field test of this system was performed in February and March, 1997. Through this test, it was confirmed that the system had met its performance design when combined with a proper hydraulic test instrument. Much useful information for future improvements to the system was also obtained.
