Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) at highly concentrated aqueous solution undergoes crosslinking reactions by ionizing irradiation, though polysaccharides and their derivatives are generally classified to radiation-degradation type polymer. In this topic, focusing on CMC radicals produced by reactions with OH radical, ESR spectra were observed to understand radiation-induced reaction mechanism of CMC aqueous solution. As a result, ESR spectra of CMC radical, produced by reactions with OH radicals from photolysis of hydrogen peroxide and EB irradiation, were succeeded to observe, and were identified as radicals located on carbon atoms of carboxymethyl groups. Furthermore, the dependency on CMC concentration of the decay behavior was discussed by considering decay behaviors of ESR spectra of long-lived CMC radical.
