Radiolysis of mixed solutions of Cl$$^{-}$$ and Br$$^{-}$$ and its effect on corrosion of a low-alloy steel

NaClとNaBrの混合水溶液についてラジオリシス計算を実施し、過酸化水素生成量についてこれまでの$$gamma$$線照射実験結果との比較を行った。計算結果は実験結果をほぼ再現したが、高純度NaCl水溶液に対しては酸性条件で過小評価される傾向にあった。各化学反応に対する感度解析を実施したところ、塩化物イオン(Cl$$^{-}$$)とOHラジカル($$^{.}$$OH)との反応の初期の3反応(Cl$$^{-}$$ + $$^{.}$$OH $$rightarrow$$ ClOH$$^{.-}$$、ClOH$$^{.-}$$ $$rightarrow$$ Cl$$^{-}$$ + $$^{.}$$OH、ClOH$$^{.-}$$ + H$$^{+}$$ $$rightarrow$$ Cl$$^{.}$$ + H$$_{2}$$O)の速度定数の変化によって過酸化水素量は大きく変化した。本結果はこれらの化学反応の速度定数の正確な評価が海水のようなNaClを含む水溶液のラジオリシス計算の信頼性向上に重要であることを示している。さらに低合金鋼SQV2Aを用いた$$gamma$$線照射下浸漬試験も実施し、NaClやNaBrが鋼材の照射下腐食に与える影響について調べた。基本的には腐食速度の変化は過酸化水素発生量の変化に追随したが、アルカリ性条件ではpH11付近で腐食速度が極大値をとり、12以上では高い過酸化水素濃度であるのに腐食がほとんど進行しなくなった。これは不働態皮膜が形成しているためであると考えられた。

複雑な結晶構造を示す金属間化合物Ni$$_3$$Nb and Ni$$_3$$Taを、室温で16MeV Au$$^{5+}$$を使い照射した。X線回折測定の結果、これらの金属間化合物の構造が、照射によって、秩序型構造からアモルファス状態へと変化したことが分かった。照射によるアモルファス化により、ビッカース硬度が上昇した。これらの結果は、以前得られたNi$$_3$$AlおよびNi$$_3$$Vの結果と比較し、試料固有の構造の点から議論された。

$$gamma$$ radiolysis experiments of solutions, which consisted of a mixture of NaCl and NaBr, were conducted to confirm the validity of radiolysis calculations of seawater simulated solutions and to determine the importance of Br$$^{-}$$ in the production of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ via water radiolysis. The steady-state concentration of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ in each solution was measured after irradiation and compared to that obtained by radiolysis calculations. It was found that the calculated and experimental results were in good agreement. The concentration of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ in the 0.6 M NaCl solution increased approximately three times by the addition of 1 mM NaBr. The result showed that Br$$^{-}$$ plays an important role in the production of H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ by water radiolysis, presumably due to the reactions of Br$$^{-}$$ with hydroxyl radical. The H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ production of 1 mM NaCl solutions increased when the pH was either higher or lower than 8. It was considered that hydrated electron also plays an important role in H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ production in these acidic and alkaline conditions.


In-situ monitoring of ion-beam luminescence of Si-O-C(-H) ceramics under proton-beam irradiation

Two kinds of Si-O-C(-H) ceramics particles having intrinsic photoluminescence (PL) spectra were prepared from silicone resin microspheres by heat treatment in a hydrogen atmosphere at 800 or 1100$$^{circ}$$C. The obtained particles were painted on a Si substrate using a binder, and ion-beam-luminescence spectra were observed under proton beam irradiation with an acceleration energy in the ranges of 1-3 MeV. Observed spectra had peaks at wavelength of 520-540 nm. These peak wavelengths were larger than those observed under UV light irradiation. The luminescence of H$$_{2}$$ 1100 (sample decarbonized at 1100$$^{circ}$$C) was bright, and that of H$$_{2}$$ 800 (sample decarbonized at 800$$^{circ}$$C) was faint. However, the intensity of luminescence decreased rapidly at an early stage of the beam irradiation. In air, a sharp luminescence band with a peak at 300 nm appeared together with the main emission with a peak in the range of 520-540 nm. The existence of the sharp band at 300 nm was apparent in the H$$_{2}$$ 800 spectra, whereas it appeared as a minor peak in the H$$_{2}$$ 1100 spectra in air.


Hardness modification of Al-Mg-Si alloy by using energetic ion beam irradiation

We have irradiated Al-Mg-Si alloy with 5.4 MeV-16 MeV several ion species at room temperature so far, and have found that ion irradiation is a useful tool for controlling the surface hardness for the alloy. In the present study, we tried several experiments as some applications of ion beam irradiation for hardness modifications of the alloy. Main results are as follows; (1) the combination of ion beam irradiation and the subsequent thermal aging are effective for the hardness modification of the alloy, and (2) designated regions and areas of the specimen can be hardened by changing the energy of ion beam and producing the irradiated area and unirradiated area of the surface. Then, we can expand the possibility of the ion beam irradiation as a new process for the three-dimensional hardness modification of Al-Mg-Si alloy.

The ion irradiation induced magnetic state of the FeRh thin films with 10 MeV Iodine ion beam has been investigated by the measurements of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). It was clearly shown in the magnetization loops by SQUID measurements that the ion irradiation induced ferromagnetic state in the FeRh thin films even below room temperature. This was also confirmed by the XMCD measurements. However ion irradiation fluence dependence on magnetic state at the sample surface measured by XMCD was totally different from that by use of SQUID. Moreover, it was revealed by XMCD sum rule analysis that the ion irradiation induced ferromagnetism of FeRh thin films was mainly dominated by the spin moment.

MFM observation of micrometer-sized magnetic patterns produced by heavy ion microbeam irradiation in FeRh films

As the irradiation effect appears only within irradiated regions, we have used ion micro-beam irradiation to produce micrometer-sized and two-dimensional magnetic patterns on the surface of FeRh thin films. The thin films nearly show the anti-ferromagnetic state at room temperature. To realize the lateral magnetic modification on the sample surface, the micro-beam irradiation was performed by using 3-MeV tandem accelerator at the TIARA. The focused 10 MeV iodine ion micro-beam, which had a rectangular shape of 2$$mu$$m $$times$$ 4$$mu$$m, was scanned on the FeRh thin film surface. After irradiation, the surface roughness and the magnetic state were observed by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic force microscopy (MFM), respectively. The AFM images show that the ion micro-beam does not create any topographic modification at the FeRh surface, while an array with 2$$mu$$m $$times$$ 4$$mu$$m bright rectangles at designated regular intervals is seen in the MFM image. The ion micro-beam is a useful tool for the fabrication of two-dimensional and micrometer-sized magnetic patterns on FeRh samples.
