A simulation model was developed to estimate an areal (surface) deposition pattern of $$^{rm 129m}$$Te after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, and by using this model, timing and intensity of the release of $$^{rm 129m}$$Te were reversely estimated from the environmental monitoring data. The validation using data for $$^{137}$$Cs showed that the model simulated atmospheric dispersion and estimated surface deposition with relatively high accuracy. The estimated surface deposition pattern of $$^{rm 129m}$$Te was consistent with the actually measured one. The estimated time and activity of $$^{rm 129m}$$Te emission seemed to indicate that the $$^{rm 129m}$$Te was emitted mainly from Unit 3.

Relaxor-based ternary Pb(In$$_{1/2}$$Nb$$_{1/2}$$)O$$_3$$-Pb(Mg$$_{1/3}$$Nb$$_{2/3}$$)O$$_3$$-PbTiO$$_3$$ (PIN-PMN-PT) ceramics near a morphotropic phase boundary were grown, and their electrical properties at various temperatures were investigated in the electrothermodynamic cycle for the future environment-friendly automotive applications. Structural disordering, depending on the PIN content, influenced the diffuse phase transition between the tetragonal and cubic structures and contributed to the power-generating behavior. The net power-generating energies (P$$_{net}$$) were 2.43-3.01 mW/cm$$^3$$ at temperatures above 200$$^circ$$C and were maintained at above 1 mW/cm$$^3$$ over a temperature range of approximately 100 degrees. Therefore, the PIN-PMN-PT system has a possibility of a wider usage temperature range, the disordering of the perovskite crystal structure can be controlled, and it will be a candidate for the application of pyroelectric energy conversion system.

Selective separation and sensitive detection of dissolved silicon and boron (DSi and DB) in aqueous solution was achieved by connecting an electrodialytic ion isolation device (EID), an ion-exclusion chromatography (IEC) column, and a corona charged aerosol detector (CCAD) in sequence. They were separated by IEC using pure water eluent. Detection of DSi and DB by the CCAD was effective for much greater sensitivity than by conductimetric detection. The EID removed salt from the sample prior to the IEC-CCAD. The combination of EID, IEC and CCAD successfully separated and determined DSi and DB in artificial seawater and hot-spring water samples by eluting pure water.

${it Aspergillus oryzae}$ is a fungus that is used widely in traditional Japanese fermentation industries. In this study, the lethal and mutagenic effects of different linear energy transfer (LET) radiation in freeze-dried conidia of ${it A. oryzae}$ were investigated. The lethal effect, which was evaluated by a 90% lethal dose, was dependent on the LET value of the ionizing radiation. The most lethal ionizing radiation among that tested was $$^{12}$$C$$^{5+}$$ ion beams with an LET of 121 keV/$$mu$$m. The $$^{12}$$C$$^{5+}$$ ion beams had a 3.6-times higher lethal effect than low-LET (0.2 keV/$$mu$$m) $$gamma$$-rays. The mutagenic effect was evaluated by the frequency of selenate resistant mutants. $$^{12}$$C$$^{6+}$$ ion beams with an LET of 86 keV/$$mu$$m were the most effective in inducing selenate resistance. The mutant frequency following exposure to $$^{12}$$C$$^{6+}$$ ion beams increased with an increase in dose and reached 3.47 $$times$$ 10$$^{-3}$$ at 700 Gy. In the dose range from 0 to 700 Gy, $$^{12}$$C$$^{5+}$$ ion beams were the second most effective in inducing selenate resistance, the mutant frequency of which reached a maximum peak (1.67 $$times$$ 10$$^{-3}$$) at 400 Gy. To elucidate the characteristics of mutation induced by ionizing radiation, mutations in the sulphate permease gene (${it sB}$) and ATP sulfurylase gene (${it sC}$) loci, the loss of function of which results in a selenate resistant phenotype, were compared between $$^{12}$$C$$^{5+}$$ ion beams and $$gamma$$-rays. We detected all types of transversions and transitions. For frameshifts, the frequency of a +1 frameshift was the highest in all cases. Although the incidence of deletions $$>$$ 2 bp was generally low, deletions $$>$$ 20 bp were characteristic for $$^{12}$$C$$^{5+}$$ ion beams. $$gamma$$-rays had a tendency to generate mutants carrying a multitude of mutations in the same locus. Both forms of radiation also induced genome-wide large-scale mutations including chromosome rearrangements and large deletions.

A flow injection (FI)-based electrochemical detection system coupled to a solid-phase extraction column was developed for the determination of trace amounts of plutonium in liquid wastes from spent nuclear-fuel reprocessing plants. The relative standard deviation of ten analyses was 1.1% for a plutonium standard solution of 25 $$mu$$g L$$^{-1}$$ containing 0.05 $$mu$$g of Pu. The detection limit calculated from three-times the standard deviation was 0.82 $$mu$$g L$$^{-1}$$ (1.64 ng of Pu).

ボロンドープダイヤモンド電極を用いたストリッピングボルタンメトリーによる微量ウランの定量法を確立した。ウラン試料溶液(pH3)をキャリア溶液により、-2.5V vs. Ag/AgClを印加した電極表面に連続的に供給(流量0.10mL min$$^{-1}$$)し前電解を行い、ウランを電極上に電析させた。試料溶液が電極上を完全に通過した後、キャリア溶液の送液を停止し、1.0V vs. Ag/AgClまで電位走査して溶出曲線を記録した。この溶出曲線の電流ピーク高さからウランを定量した。ウラン試料溶液を0.50mL導入した際、0ng mL$$^{-1}$$から1270ng mL$$^{-1}$$の範囲でウラン濃度と電流ピーク高さの間には良好な直線関係が得られ、127ng mL$$^{-1}$$のウランを相対標準偏差5%程度で定量が可能であった。核燃料再処理廃液中のウランを固相抽出による分離後、本法による測定を試み、良好な結果を得た。
