The $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe cross section from the surrogate ratio method and its effect on the $$^{60}$$Fe nucleosynthesis

The long-lived $$^{60}$$Fe (with a half-life of 2.62 Myr) is a crucial diagnostic of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way galaxy and in supernovae near the solar system. The neutron-capture reaction $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe on $$^{59}$$Fe (half-life=44.5 days) is the key reaction for the production of $$^{60}$$Fe in massive stars. This reaction cross section has been previously constrained by the Coulomb dissociation experiment, which offered partial constraint on the E1 $$gamma$$-ray strength function but a negligible constraint on the M1 and E2 components. In this work, for the first time, we use the surrogate ratio method to experimentally determine the $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe cross sections in which all the components are included. We derived a Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 27.5$$pm$$3.5 mb at $$kT$$ = 30 keV and 13.4$$pm$$1.7 mb at $$kT$$ = 90 keV, roughly 10%-20% higher than previous estimates. We analyzed the impact of our new reaction rates in nucleosynthesis models of massive stars and found that uncertainties in the production of $$^{60}$$Fe from the $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe rate are at most 25$$%$$. We conclude that stellar physics uncertainties now play a major role in the accurate evaluation of the stellar production of $$^{60}$$Fe.

The long carrier lifetime and defect tolerance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are major contributors to the superb performance of MHP optoelectronic devices. Large polarons were reported to be responsible for the long carrier lifetime. Yet microscopic mechanisms of the large polaron formation, including the so-called phonon melting, are still under debate. Here, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering experiments and first-principles density-functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the lattice vibrations (or phonon dynamics) in methylammonium lead iodide, a prototypical example of MHPs. Our findings are that optical phonons lose temporal coherence gradually with increasing temperature which vanishes at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition. Surprisingly, however, we found that the spatial coherence is still retained throughout the decoherence process. We argue that the temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations contribute to the formation of large polarons in this metal halide perovskite.

理化学研究所RIBFにおいて、$$N$$=32同位体である$$^{50}$$Arの低励起構造を陽子・中性子ノックアウト反応,多核子剥離反応,陽子非弾性散乱と$$gamma$$線分光によって調査した。すでに知られていた2つに加えて、3$$^{-}$$状態の候補を含む5つの状態を新たに確認した。$$gamma$$ $$gamma$$ coincidenceによって得られた準位図は$$sd-pf$$模型空間での殻模型計算やカイラル2体・3体力による第一原理計算と比較した。陽子・中性子ノックアウト反応断面積の理論との比較により、新たに発見された2つの状態は2$$^{+}$$状態であり、また以前に4$$^{+}_{1}$$とされていた状態も2$$^{+}$$であることが示唆された。

Using photoelectron diffraction (PED) and magnetic dichroism measurements, we explore the electronic and magnetic properties of the near-surface region of the valence-fluctuating material EuIr$$_2$$Si$$_2$$. We present and discuss the methodology for modeling of the 4$$f$$ photoemission spectra, PED patterns and magnetic dichroism for rare-earth-based materials. For the Eu-terminated surface we found that the topmost Eu layer is divalent and exhibits a ferromagnetic order below 10 K. The valency of the next Eu layer, that is the 5th atomic layer, is about 2.8 at low temperature that is close to the valency in the bulk. The properties of the Si-terminated surface are drastically different. The first subsurface Eu layer (4th atomic layer below the surface) behaves divalently and orders ferromagnetically at much higher temperature. Experimental data indicate, however, that there is an admixture of trivalent Eu in this layer, resulting in its valency of about 2.1. The next deeper lying Eu layer (8th atomic layer below the surface) behaves mixed-valently, but the estimated valency of 2.4 is notably lower than the value in the bulk. The obtained results create a background for further studies of exotic surface properties of 4$$f$$-based materials, and allow to derive information related to valency and magnetism of individual rare-earth layers in a rather extended area near the surface.

Substitution of Ge for Mn increases the elastic moduli of different $${h k l}$$ orientations of the CoCrFeMnNi-based high-entropy alloy. Our findings indicate that tuning minor element compositions may result in improved strength-ductility combination. The underlying deformation mechanisms of CoCrFeNiGe$$_{0.3}$$ were examined by ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction and analysis of the associated diffraction profiles during tensile deformation. The strain-hardening response of CoCrFeNiGe$$_{0.3}$$ exhibited a dominant mechanism of mechanical twinning at moderate and large strains at room temperature. The evolution of the bulk work hardening rate was consistent with the convolutional multiple whole profile fitting results, which exhibited a continuous increase in twin formation probability.

評価済み核構造データファイル(Evaluated Nuclear Structure Data File: ENSDF)は、原子核構造と崩壊に関する様々な実験データを全ての核種について集めて、それらの実験データの評価値を与えてある世界唯一のデータファイルである。ENSDFは定期的に更新されており、そのための評価作業は各国の評価者で分担している。評価作業を速やかに行うために、IAEAの援助の下に評価者の国際的なネットワークが組織されている。この発表では、ネットワークの最近の活動のうち、ENSDFの処理コードの開発、測定が必要とされているデータのリストの作成、インターネット版核図表の利用の拡充などについて報告する。また、核構造・崩壊データの需要が増大しているにもかかわらず、評価者が減っている問題についても述べる。

To elucidate retention mechanism of cement waste form for radioactive iodine, this paper investigated interaction mechanism between iodine and ettringite, which is a component mineral of cement and has anion exchange ability. We revealed that ettringite has a high capacity for accommodating IO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ via anion substitution for SO$$_{4}$$$$^{2-}$$. The combined iodine K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra and first-principles calculations using density functional theory suggested that IO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ was stabilized in ettringite by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic forces. The bonding charge density analysis of the substituted IO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ into the ettringite structure revealed the interaction between intercalated IO$$_{3}$$$$^{-}$$ with the structural water molecules. These results provided valuable insight into the long-term stabilization of anionic iodine species and their migration in cementitious nuclear waste repository or alkaline environments.

To unveil the origin of the hydrogen-storage properties of rhodium nanoparticles (Rh NPs), we investigated the dynamical structural change of Rh NPs using ${it in situ}$ dispersive X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS). The variation of the Rh-Rh interatomic distance and Debye-Waller factor of Rh NPs with a size of 4.0 and 10.5 nm during hydrogen absorption and desorption suggested that they have a different mechanism for hydrogen absorption, which is that the hydrogen absorption on the inner site has a greater contribution than that on a surface for Rh 4.0 nm. In the case of Rh 10.5 nm, it is opposed to Rh 4.0 nm. This study demonstrates a powerful ${it in situ}$ XAFS method for observing small local structural changes of metal nanoparticles and its importance for understanding of the hydrogen-absorption properties of Rh NPs with an interesting hydrogenation mechanism.

Phage typically have small genomes and depend on their bacterial hosts for replication. We generated metagenomic datasets from many diverse ecosystems and reconstructed hundreds of huge phage genomes, between 200 kbp and 716 kbp in length. Thirty four genomes were manually curated to completion, including the largest phage genomes yet reported. Expanded genetic repertoires include diverse and new CRISPR-Cas systems, tRNAs, tRNA synthetases, tRNA modification enzymes, initiation and elongation factors and ribosomal proteins. Phage CRISPR have the capacity to silence host transcription factors and translational genes, potentially as part of a larger interaction network that intercepts translation to redirect biosynthesis to phage-encoded functions. Some phage repurpose bacterial systems for phage-defense to eliminate competing phage. We phylogenetically define seven major clades of huge phage from human and other animal microbiomes, oceans, lakes, sediments, soils and the built environment. We conclude that large gene inventories reflect a conserved biological strategy, observed across a broad bacterial host range and resulting in the distribution of huge phage across Earth's ecosystems.

ガンマ線分光による$$N$$=40同調体である$$^{62}$$Tiの分光学研究を$$^{63}$$V($$p$$,$$2p$$)$$^{62}$$TiをRIBFで行った。今回初めて測定された$$2_1^+ rightarrow 0_{rm gs}^+$$$$4_1^+ rightarrow 2_1^+$$の遷移はTiの基底状態が変形していることを示唆した。これらのエネルギーは近傍核の$$^{64}$$Crや$$^{66}$$Feと比較して大きく、したがって四重極集団運動が小さくなっていることが示唆される。今回の結果は大規模殻模型計算によって良く再現される一方、第一原理計算や平均場模型では今回の結果は再現されなかった。

$$^{54}$$Caでは中性子魔法数34が現れると考えられているが、その直接的な実験的証拠を得るため、$$^{54}$$Caからの中性子ノックアウト反応$$^{54}$$Ca($$p,pn$$)$$^{53}$$Caによって生成される状態を理化学研究所のRI Beam Factoryによって調べた。基底状態および2.2MeVの励起状態が強く生成され、1.7MeVの励起状態の生成量は小さかった。$$^{53}$$Caの運動量分布から、基底状態および2.2MeVの励起状態は$$p$$軌道の中性子を叩き出して得られた状態であることが明らかになった。DWIA計算によって得られた分光学的因子から、$$^{54}$$Caは$$p$$軌道がほぼ完全に占有された閉殻構造を持つことが明らかになり、中性子魔法数34の出現が確実なものとなった。

Plastic anisotropy and deformation-induced phase transformation of additively manufactured (AM) stainless steels were investigated via in-situ neutron diffraction, electron backscatter diffraction, metallography, and fractography. Two types of tensile specimens were manufactured: (1) One sample was vertically fabricated with its tensile axis parallel to the z-direction (AM-V), (2) The other sample was horizontally fabricated with its tensile axis perpendicular to the z-direction (AM-H). A commercial 15-5PH stainless steel (CA) was used for comparison. AM steel revealed enhanced yield strength, tensile strength, and uniform elongation over CA, which was mainly due to grain refinement and transformation induced plasticity (TRIP). Different onsets of strain nonlinearity between AM-V and AM-H were closely related to martensitic phase transformation.

Inclusive one- and multi-nucleon removal cross sections were measured for several Sn, Sb and Te isotopes beyond the $$N$$ = 82 neutron shell closure at RIBF, RIKEN. The experimental cross sections are compared to predictions from the most recent Liege intranuclear cascade model. Severe discrepancies are observed and are discussed. Also, the measured inclusive one-proton knockout cross section for the semi-magic $$^{134}$$Sn projectile is compared to eikonal direct reaction theory calculations to assess if the suppression factors to these calculated cross sections are applicable to heavy nuclei.
