Co$$_{x}$$TaS$$_{2}$$ ($$x approx 1/3$$) exhibits a spontaneous Hall effect from spin texture in antiferromagnets, with a tetrahedral triple-Q ($$3mathbf{Q}$$) order and uniform spin scalar chirality. Upon Co overdoping ($$x > 1/3$$), it undergoes a shift in magnetic ordering vectors from $$mathbf{Q}_mathrm{m} = (1/2, 0, 0)$$ to $$(1/3, 0, 0)$$. Interestingly, the spontaneous Hall effect disappeared in the overdoped regime, which was originally attributed to the loss of $$3mathbf{Q}$$ order. However, a question remains whether a new type of $$3mathbf{Q}$$ order can exist with alternating chirality in the overdoped regime. To address this, we investigated Co$$_{0.336}$$TaS$$_{2}$$ using inelastic neutron scattering (INS), neutron diffraction, and optical dichroism, and found that INS data and spin-wave simulations support a $$3mathbf{Q}$$ order with alternating chirality. Moreover, neutron diffraction data show field-independent Bragg peaks, while linear dichroism detects no in-plane anisotropy, consistent with threefold rotation symmetry. Our data support the scenario of an alternating-chirality $$3mathbf{Q}$$ order in Co$$_{0.336}$$TaS$$_{2}$$, cancelling the spontaneous Hall effect. This study highlights a combined neutron-optical approach to identify complex spin textures.

Dual-phase (DP) high- and medium-entropy alloys (H/MEAs), consisting of face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) phases, have attracted attention because of their excellent strength-ductility balance. However, the temperature dependence of hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) strengthening remains unclear. In this study, an Al$$_{7}$$(CoNiV)$$_{93}$$ DP MEA was investigated using in-situ neutron diffraction and multiscale electron microscopy. Both intrinsic strength and HDI strengthening increased at cryogenic temperature. This enhancement originated from the increased lattice friction stress of the hard BCC phase and suppressed dislocation mobility at low temperature, which promoted dislocation accumulation at heterogeneous interfaces. These findings provide insights into temperature-dependent HDI strengthening in DP H/MEAs and related alloy systems.

Additive manufacturing (AM) of particle-reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) enables control of both strength and deformation behavior. In this study, TiC (2 wt%) nanoparticles were added to Fe$$_{60}$$Co$$_{15}$$Ni$$_{15}$$Cr$$_{10}$$ medium-entropy alloy (MEA) using directed energy deposition (DED). Although part of the TiC decomposed during processing, the released C and Ti stabilized the $$gamma$$-austenite phase and suppressed deformation-induced martensitic transformation (DIMT), shifting deformation toward slip-dominated behavior. Microstructural observations revealed dispersed TiC particles and modified grain boundary morphology that promoted distributed plastic flow. In-situ neutron diffraction during tensile testing confirmed enhanced early-stage dislocation activity. These findings demonstrate that nanoparticle-induced phase stability changes strongly influence deformation mechanisms in AM-processed MMCs.

In the search for unconventional magnetism, exotic quantum states are characterized by a lack of order and a broad spin excitation continuum approaching zero temperature. We study the two-dimensional triangular-lattice effective spin-system CeMgAl$$_{11}$$O$$_{19}$$, which shows slight disorder but no magnetic ordering down to 100 millikelvin. Spin-wave analysis in the magnetic-field-polarized state determines the spin Hamiltonian featuring a mixed ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction. This places the system near an exactly solvable point of the spin-triangular-lattice XXZ model with extensive ground-state degeneracy. In zero field, neutron spectroscopy reveals a prominent continuum; we show that this arises from an ensemble average of spin-wave spectra across the degenerate ground-state manifold. This demonstrates that the role of weak quenched disorder can be quantitatively constrained: It inhibits unique ground-state selection and stabilizes a local distribution within the degenerate manifold, yielding continuum-like spectra that necessitate a critical reevaluation of the experimental signatures of exotic quantum states.

Stacking fault energy (SFE) controls key deformation mechanisms in metals. This study demonstrates that apparent SFE and deformation behavior can be tuned by modifying only the near-surface microstructure ($$sim$$100 um) through surface severe plastic deformation. The resulting gradient microstructure reduces apparent SFE, promoting martensitic transformation via preferential nucleation and stress partitioning. Consequently, mechanical properties are enhanced, achieving higher strength with minimal ductility loss, highlighting the effectiveness of localized microstructural engineering.

High-strength structural alloys are essential for advanced engineering. This study explores the mechanical behavior of a dual-phase AlCoNiV medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with FCC and BCC phases. The alloy shows excellent performance, with a yield strength of 1148 MPa, tensile strength of 1556 MPa, and 40% uniform elongation. In-situ neutron diffraction and EBSD analyses reveal that strength originates from the intrinsic responses of both phases. The BCC phase carries more load, while dislocation buildup at phase boundaries enhances strength via hetero-deformation-induced (HDI) strengthening. Synergistic effects, including stress partitioning and load redistribution, further improve mechanical performance. These findings highlight the role of phase-specific properties and interphase interactions in alloy robustness and offer insights for microstructural optimization.

The cellular structure plays a key role in determining the mechanical properties of metal additive manufacturing (MAM) components. This study presents in situ neutron diffraction and dislocation density-based modeling for a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) made via directed energy deposition (DED). A constitutive model based on the Kocks-Mecking-Estrin framework was used to represent the cellular structure. Parametric analysis showed lower dislocation accumulation and annihilation rates in the as-built sample (with cellular structure) than in the heat-treated one. These differences are linked to dislocation forest networks and local stacking fault energy variations. Dislocation density across cell interiors and walls was also compared with deformation-induced dislocation cells.

In this study, we theoretically demonstrate that thermally excited magnons can induce scalar spin chirality (SSC) even in collinear spin systems. We show both numerically and analytically that the SSC increases with the magnitude of DMI and temperature and reveal that the magnon-induced SSC can achieve a magnitude comparable to those observed in non-coplanar spin configurations. These findings suggest that SSC plays a significant role even in collinear spin systems, providing new insights into the chiral physics of magnetic materials.

In this work, we harness a hierarchical microstructure to simultaneously tailor strengthening and deformation mechanisms in a Co$$_{21}$$Cr$$_{12.5}$$Fe$$_{55}$$Ni$$_{4}$$Mo$$_{7.5}$$ (at%) ferrous medium-entropy alloy (MEA). A simple thermomechanical process (cold rolling and 90 s annealing) produces ultrafine recrystallized grains, non-recrystallized grains with substructures, and intragranular nanoprecipitates. This structure, with high dislocation density and fine grains, yields a high strength of $$sim$$1.60 GPa but can risk premature fracture. To overcome this, L$"u$ders deformation, enabled by ultrafine grain boundaries and stress-induced martensitic transformation at pre-existing nucleation sites, is employed. Stable L$"u$ders band propagation delays strain hardening and enables large uniform ductility. As a result, a tensile strength of $$sim$$1.84 GPa and uniform elongation of $$sim$$20% are achieved, matching the best tensile properties among reported multi-principal element alloys.

Face-centered cubic (FCC) equi-atomic multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) exhibit excellent mechanical properties from cryogenic to room temperatures. At room temperature, deformation is dominated by dislocation slip, while at cryogenic temperatures (CTs), reduced stacking fault energy enhances strain hardening with twinning. This study uses in-situ neutron diffraction to analyze the temperature-dependent deformation behavior of Al$$_{7}$$(CoNiV)$$_{93}$$, a dual-phase (FCC/BCC) medium-entropy alloy (MEA). At liquid nitrogen temperature (LNT), deformation twinning in the FCC matrix leads to additional strain hardening through the dynamic Hall-Petch effect, giving the appearance of improved strengthening at LNT. In contrast, BCC precipitates show dislocation slip at both 77 K and 298 K, with temperature-dependent lattice friction stress playing a significant role in strengthening. The study enhances understanding of deformation behaviors and provides insights for future alloy design.

Multi-$$mathbf{Q}$$ magnetic structures on two-dimensional (2D) lattices provide a key route to realizing topological physics in 2D magnetism. A major experimental challenge is to unambiguously confirm their formation by excluding the possibility of topologically trivial multi-domain single- or double-$$mathbf{Q}$$ magnetic orders, which cannot be distinguished using conventional diffraction techniques. Here, we propose that long-wavelength spin dynamics offers a universal diagnostic for triangular lattices: triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ orders that preserve rotational symmetry and single- or double-$$mathbf{Q}$$ orders that break it exhibit qualitatively distinct anisotropies in their Goldstone mode velocities, stemming from fundamental differences in their underlying spin configurations. We validate this concept using the metallic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Co$$_{0.325}$$TaS$$_{2}$$, which hosts both a stripe-type single-$$mathbf{Q}$$ state and a triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ tetrahedral ordering at different temperatures. Using inelastic neutron-scattering and spin dynamics simulations, we first refine the spin Hamiltonian by fitting the paramagnetic excitation spectra, allowing us to develop an unbiased model independent of magnetic ordering. We then show that the observed velocity profiles of the Goldstone modes agree with the high-temperature model's predictions: markedly anisotropic for the single-$$mathbf{Q}$$ phase and near isotropic for the triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ phase. Importantly, this contrast persists across various exchange parameters, highlighting its model-independent nature and suggesting potential applicability to other 2D lattice systems. Beyond the long-wavelength regime, we present a substantial discrepancy between the measured and simulated magnon spectra exclusively in the triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ phase. We attribute this discrepancy to magnon energy renormalization arising from order-of-magnitude-enhanced magnon-magnon interactions in the triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ phase, due to its noncollinear configuration. This work provides universal insight into the dynamical properties of topological multi-$$mathbf{Q}$$ magnetic orderings in 2D lattice structures, offering a broadly applicable diagnostic to distinguishing them from topologically trivial single- or double-$$mathbf{Q}$$ counterparts. The unequivocal confirmation of the triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ structure in Co$$_{0.325}$$TaS$$_{2}$$ further establishes it as a prominent material platform for exploring topological spin textures in the genuine 2D limit.

Scalar spin chirality Nernst effect

It remains an open question whether or not the scalar spin chirality itself can exhibit a Hall-type transport. In this work, we show that the answer is yes: The scalar spin chirality is Hall-transported in Kagome ferromagnets and antiferromagnets under an external bias, engendering a phenomenon which we dub the scalar spin chirality Nernst effect. Our findings call for the need to lift the conventional assumption that the scalar spin chirality is a static quantity in order to discover the active roles of the scalar spin chirality in transport properties.

Neutron interferometry has played a distinctive role in fundamental science and characterization of materials. Moir$'e$ neutron interferometers are candidate next-generation instruments: they offer microscopy-like magnification of the signal, enabling direct camera recording of interference patterns across the full neutron wavelength spectrum. Here we demonstrate the extension of phase-grating moir$'e$ interferometry to two-dimensional geometries. Our measurements of phase topologies and gravitationally induced phase shifts are in good agreement with theory.

This study explores the influence of the interatomic structure of sodium aluminosilicate hydrate (N-A-S-H) with varying silica contents on the mechanical properties of metakaolin-based geopolymer. Geopolymer pastes comprising Si/Al ratios between 2.0 and 3.0 were synthesized. A larger number of Si-O-Si linkages compared to Si-O-Al linkages and a higher atomic number density were found in the geopolymers with higher silica contents, which enhanced the compressive strength of the geopolymer pastes up to the optimal Si/Al ratio of 2.5. The paste with a Si/Al = 2.5 exhibited a greater portion of Q$$^{4}$$(1Al and 2Al) and denser morphology compared to the other geopolymer pastes. Furthermore, in-situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray scattering experiments were conducted to assess the elastic modulus of the aluminosilicate structure at a local atomic scale. The modulus value in real space decreases with increasing silica contents up to Si/Al = 2.5 and increases with the presence of excessive unreacted silica fume. The modulus value in reciprocal space for the axial and lateral directions both presented a positive value at the geopolymer comprising a Si/Al ratio higher than 2.5, indicating that the load-bearing property of N-A-S-H changed at higher Si/Al ratios. Moreover, the smallest difference between the strains along the axial and lateral directions was detected for the geopolymer with Si/Al = 2.5 in both the real and reciprocal space, owing to the most interconnected and flexible nanostructure, which led to the highest mechanical strength.

The effects of various initial carbonation curing environments on the phase evolution and resulting mechanical characteristics of tricalcium silicate paste were studied. For the analyses of the reaction products and microstructure, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography were utilized. C$$_{3}$$S cured under carbonation environment pressurized by 0.1 MPa showed excellent mechanical properties owing to the highest degree of reaction and homogeneous generation of CaCO$$_{3}$$ with low-Ca/Si calcium silicate hydrates, resulting in a dense matrix with refined pore structure. C$$_{3}$$S paste treated under other carbonation conditions underwent deteriorative microstructural phase transitions, including void evolution by decalcification of C-S-H and an inhomogeneous composition of crystalline phases, resulting in inferior properties.

The triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) has been the standard paradigm of frustrated magnetism for several decades. The most common magnetic ordering in insulating TLAFs is the 120$$^{circ}$$ structure. However, a new triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ chiral ordering can emerge in metallic TLAFs, representing the short wavelength limit of magnetic skyrmion crystals. We report the metallic TLAF Co$$_{1/3}$$TaS$$_{2}$$ as the first example of tetrahedral triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ magnetic ordering with the associated topological Hall effect (non-zero $$sigma_{xy}(mathbf{H}=0)$$). We also present a theoretical framework that describes the emergence of this magnetic ground state, which is further supported by the electronic structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Additionally, our measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section are consistent with the calculated dynamical structure factor of the tetrahedral triple-$$mathbf{Q}$$ state.

Face-centered cubic single-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) containing multi-principal transition metals have attracted significant attention, exhibiting an unprecedented combination of strength and ductility owing to their low stacking fault energy (SFE) and large misfit parameter that creates severe local lattice distortion. Increasing both strength and ductility further is challenging. In the present study, we demonstrate via meticulous experiments that the CoCrFeNi HEA with the addition of the substitutional metalloid Si can retain a single-phase FCC structure while its yield strength (up to 65%), ultimate strength (up to 34%), and ductility (up to 15%) are simultaneously increased, owing to a synthetical effect of the enhanced solid solution strengthening and a reduced SFE. The dislocation behaviors and plastic deformation mechanisms were tuned by the addition of Si, which improves the strain hardening and tensile ductility. The present study provides new strategies for enhancing HEA performance by targeted metalloid additions.

This study explored the effect of M-S-H formation on the local atomic arrangements and mechanical properties of C-S-H. The elastic moduli of the samples were calculated using shifted atomic distances (r) and d-spacings (d) acquired by applying an external load on the pastes during X-ray scattering experiments. The experimental results indicated that the crystal structure of C-S-H remained intact with MgCl$$_{2}$$ addition. At the highest Mg/Si ratio (Ca/Si = 0.6, Mg/Si = 0.2), change in the dominant phase occurred from C-S-H to M-S-H because the low pH environment hindered the formation of C-S-H and facilitated the formation of M-S-H. The elastic modulus decreased with increasing Mg/Si ratio up to 0.1 owing to both C-S-H destabilization and low M-S-H content in the samples. Conversely, the elastic modulus increased in the paste synthesized with the highest Mg/Si ratio because considerable M-S-H had formed, which exhibited a higher elastic modulus than C-S-H.
