Fatigue crack non-propagation behavior of a gradient steel structure from induction hardened railway axles

Abnormal damages in railway axles can lead to a significant hazard to running safety and reliability. To this end, a surface treatment was selected to effectively inhibit fatigue crack initiation and growth. In this study, a single edge notch bending fatigue test campaign with artificial notches was conducted to elucidate the fatigue crack non-propagation behavior in railway S38C axles subjected to an induction hardening process. The fatigue cracking behavior in the gradient structure was revealed by optical microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, and fractography. The microhardness distribution was measured using a Vickers tester. The obtained results show that the microhardness of the strengthening layer is nearly triple that of the matrix. Owing to the gradient microstructures and hardness, as well as compressive residual stress, the fatigue long crack propagates faster once it passes through the hardened zone (approximately 2.0 mm in the radial depth). Thereafter, local retarding (including deflection, branching, and blunting) of the long crack occurs because of the relatively coarse ferrite and pearlite in the transition region and matrix. Totally, this fatigue cracking resistance is reasonably believed to be due to the gradient microstructure and residual stress. These findings help to tailor a suitable detection strategy for maximum defects or cracks in railway axles.

Face-centered cubic single-phase high-entropy alloys (HEAs) containing multi-principal transition metals have attracted significant attention, exhibiting an unprecedented combination of strength and ductility owing to their low stacking fault energy (SFE) and large misfit parameter that creates severe local lattice distortion. Increasing both strength and ductility further is challenging. In the present study, we demonstrate via meticulous experiments that the CoCrFeNi HEA with the addition of the substitutional metalloid Si can retain a single-phase FCC structure while its yield strength (up to 65%), ultimate strength (up to 34%), and ductility (up to 15%) are simultaneously increased, owing to a synthetical effect of the enhanced solid solution strengthening and a reduced SFE. The dislocation behaviors and plastic deformation mechanisms were tuned by the addition of Si, which improves the strain hardening and tensile ductility. The present study provides new strategies for enhancing HEA performance by targeted metalloid additions.

The nuclear structure of $$^{248}$$Cf produced by the $$^{18}$$O+$$^{249}$$Cf multinucleon transfer reaction was investigated using $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy. Analysis of the $$gamma$$-ray spectrum of $$^{248}$$Cf revealed the presence of multiple long-lived (isomeric) excited states at low excitation energies. The energies and half-lives of the isomers contain information on the proton and neutron orbits in the heavy-element region and the deformation of atomic nuclei, and are important data to predict the properties of nuclei in the "island of stability".

$$^{59}$$Vと$$^{61}$$Vの低励起準位構造を初めて探索した。$$^{61}$$Vについては中性子ノックアウト反応と陽子非弾性散乱が、$$^{59}$$Vについては中性子ノックアウト反応データが得られた。$$^{59}$$Vについては4つ、$$^{61}$$Vについては5つの新たな遷移が確認された。Lenzi-Nowacki-Poves-Sieja (LNPS)相互作用に基づく殻模型計算との比較によって、それぞれの同位体について確認されたガンマ線のうち3つが、first 11/2$$^{-}$$状態とfirst 9/2$$^{-}$$状態からの崩壊と決定された。$$^{61}$$Vについては、($$p$$,$$p'$$)非弾性散乱断面積は四重極変形と十六重極変形を想定したチャネル結合法により解析されたが、十六重極変形の影響により、明確に反転の島に属するとは決定できなかった。

We report time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on the spin fluctuation spectrum in the 112-type iron-based superconductor (FeSC) Ca$$_{0.82}$$La$$_{0.18}$$Fe$$_{0.96}$$Ni$$_{0.04}$$As$$_{2}$$ (CaLa-112). In comparison to the 122-type FeSCs with a centrosymmetric tetragonal lattice structure (space group $$I4/mmm$$) at room temperature and an in-plane stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at low temperature, the 112 system has a noncentrosymmetric structure (space group $$P2_1$$) with additional zigzag arsenic chains between Ca/La layers and a magnetic ground state with similar wavevector $$mathbf{Q}_mathrm{AF}$$ but different orientations of ordered moments in the parent compounds. Our INS study clearly reveals that the in-plane dispersions and the bandwidth of spin excitations in the superconducting CaLa-112 closely resemble to those in 122 systems. While the total fluctuating moments $$langle m^2 rangle approx 4.6 pm 0.2$$ $$mu_B^2$$/Fe are larger than 122 system, the dynamic correlation lengths are similar ($$xi approx 10$$ ${AA}$). These results suggest that superconductivity in iron arsenides may have a common magnetic origin under similar magnetic exchange couplings with a dual nature from local moments and itinerant electrons, despite their different magnetic patterns and lattice symmetries.

Grain refinement can lead to the strengthening of metallic materials according to the Hall-Petch relationship. However, our recent results suggested that grain boundary sliding is the dominant deformation mode in bulk ultrafine grained (UFG) pure Mg at room temperature, leading to softening. Here, for the first time, we report that the Hall-Petch strengthening can be regained in bulk UFG pure Mg at cryogenic temperature. At 77K, the UFG pure Mg with a mean grain size of 0.6 $$mu$$m exhibited ultrahigh tensile yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 309 MPa and 380 MPa, respectively. Combined ${it in situ}$ neutron diffraction and electron microscopy investigation indicated that residual dislocation structures and deformation twins hardly formed in the UFG specimen during tensile test at 298K. In contrast, fast accumulation of lattice defects and remarkable reorientation were evident at 77K, suggesting that the grain-boundary-mediated process was suppressed and the plastic deformation was dominated by dislocation slip and deformation twinning. In addition, all the pure Mg specimens exhibited pronounced strain hardening at 77 K, which was mainly attributed to the suppressed grain boundary sliding and dynamic recovery. The mean dislocation density and relative fractions of dislocations with various Burgers vectors of the UFG specimen deformed at 77K were determined quantitatively from neutron diffraction data.

The selenium isotopes lie at the heart of a tumultuous region of the nuclear chart where shape coexistence effects grapple with neutron-proton pairing correlations, triaxiality, and the impending proton dripline. In this work a study of $$^{72}$$Se by internal conversion electron and $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy was undertaken with the SPICE and TIGRESS arrays. New measurements of the branching ratio and lifetime of the $$0_2^+$$ state were performed yielding a determination of $$rho^2(E0; 0_2^+{rightarrow}0_1^+)=29(3)$$ milliunits. Two state mixing calculations were performed that highlighted the importance of interpretation of such $$E0$$ strength values in the context of shape-coexistence.


Status of the uncertainty quantification for severe accident sequences of different NPP-designs in the frame of the H-2020 project MUSA

The current HORIZON-2020 project on "Management and Uncertainties of Severe Accidents (MUSA)" aims at applying Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) in the modeling of Severe Accidents (SA), particularly in predicting the radiological source term of mitigated and unmitigated accident scenarios. Within its application part, the project is devoted to the uncertainty quantification of different severe accident codes when predicting the radiological source term of selected severe accident sequences of different nuclear power plant designs, e.g. PWR, VVER, and BWR. Key steps for this investigation are, (a) the selection of severe accident sequences for each reactor design, (b) the development of a reference input model for the specific design and SA-code, (c) the selection of a list of uncertain model parameters to be investigated, (d) the choice of an UQ-tool e.g. DAKOTA, SUSA, URANIE, etc., (e) the definition of the figures of merit for the UA-analysis, (f) the performance of the simulations with the SA-codes, and, (g) the statistical evaluation of the results using the capabilities, i.e. methods and tools offered by the UQ-tools. This paper describes the project status of the UQ of different SA codes for the selected SA sequences, and the technical challenges and lessons learnt from the preparatory and exploratory investigations performed.

中性子過剰核$$^{54}$$Caでは、新魔法数34が発見されて以来、その構造を知るために多くの実験がなされてきたが、それを超える中性子過剰核の情報は全く知られてこなかった。本論文では、理化学研究所RIBFにて$$^{55}$$K, $$^{55}$$Ca, $$^{57}$$Caの励起状態から脱励起するガンマ線を初めて観測した結果を報告した。それぞれ1つのガンマ線しか得られなかったものの、$$^{55}$$Kおよび$$^{55}$$Caのデータは、それぞれ、陽子の$$d_{3/2}$$$$s_{1/2}$$軌道間のエネルギー差、中性子の$$p_{1/2}$$$$f_{5/2}$$軌道間のエネルギー差を敏感に反映し、両方とも最新の殻模型計算によって200keV程度の精度で再現できることがわかった。また、1粒子状態の程度を特徴づける分光学的因子を実験データと歪曲波インパルス近似による反応計算から求め、その値も殻模型計算の値と矛盾しないことがわかった。


Achieving excellent mechanical properties in type 316 stainless steel by tailoring grain size in homogeneously recovered or recrystallized nanostructures

One hopeful path to realize good comprehensive mechanical properties in metallic materials is to accomplish homogeneous nanocrystalline (NC) or ultrafine grained (UFG) structure with low dislocation density. In this work, high pressure torsion deformation followed by appropriate annealing was performed on 316 stainless steel (SS). For the first time, we successfully obtained NC/UFG 316 SS having uniform microstructures with various average grain sizes ranging from 46 nm to 2.54 $$mu$$m and low dislocation densities. Among the series, an un-precedentedly high yield strength (2.34 GPa) was achieved at the smallest grain size of 46 nm, in which dislocation scarcity induced hardening accounting for 57% of the strength. On the other hand, exceptional strength-ductility synergy with high yield strength (900 MPa) and large uniform elongation (27%) was obtained in the fully recrystallized specimen having the grain size of 0.38 $$mu$$m. The high yield stress and scarcity of dislocation sources in recrystallized UFGs activated stacking faults and deformation twins nucleating from grain boundaries during straining, and their interaction with dislocations allowed for sustainable strain hardening, which also agreed with the plaston concept recently proposed. The multiple deformation modes activated, together with the effective strengthening mechanisms, were responsible for the outstanding comprehensive mechanical performance of the material.

In the local or itinerant extreme, magnetic excitations can be described by the Heisenberg model which treats electron spins as localized moments, or by the itinerant-electron model where the exchange interaction between electrons leads to unequal numbers of electrons with up and down spins. However, the nature of the magnetic excitations has been elusive when both local moments and itinerant electrons are present in the intermediate range. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence on the coexistence of and interplay between local moments and itinerant electrons in a van der Waals metallic ferromagnet Fe$$_{2.72}$$GeTe$$_{2}$$, which can sustain tunable room-temperature ferromagnetism down to the monolayer limit. We find that there exist ferromagnetic spin-wave excitations dispersing from the zone center at low energies resulting from local moments and a columnlike broad continuum at the zone boundary at high energies up to over 100 meV resulting from itinerant electrons. Unlike the two-dimensional crystal structure, the low-energy mode exhibits a three-dimensional nature, and the high-energy mode also has an out-of-plane dependence. Both modes persist well above the Curie temperature of 160 K. Our neutron spectroscopic data reveal that the low-energy spin waves at 100 K are more coherent than those at 4 K, which is evidence of the weakening of the Kondo screening at high temperatures. These results unambiguously demonstrate the coexistence of local moments and itinerant electrons and the Kondo effect between these two components in Fe$$_{2.72}$$GeTe$$_{2}$$. Such behaviors are generally expected in heavy-fermion systems with heavy $$f$$ electrons but are rarely clearly observed in materials with light $$d$$ electrons. These findings shed light on the understanding of magnetism in transition-metal compounds.

Dimerized magnets forming alternating Heisenberg chains exhibit quantum coherence and entanglement and thus can find potential applications in quantum information and computation. However, magnetic systems typically undergo thermal decoherence at finite temperatures. Here, we show inelastic neutron scattering results on an alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic chain compound Na$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{2}$$TeO$$_{6}$$ that the excited quasiparticles can counter thermal decoherence and maintain strong correlations at elevated temperatures. At low temperatures, we observe clear dispersive singlet-triplet excitations arising from the dimers formed along the crystalline $$b$$-axis. The excitation gap is of $$sim$$18 meV and the bandwidth is about half of the gap. The band top energy has a weak modulation along the [100] direction, indicative of a small interchain coupling. The gap increases while the bandwidth decreases with increasing temperature, leading to a strong reduction in the available phase space for the triplons. As a result, the Lorentzian-type energy broadening becomes highly asymmetric as the temperature is raised. These results are associated with a strongly correlated state resulting from hard-core constraint and quasiparticle interactions. We consider these results to be not only evidence for strong correlations at finite temperatures in Na$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{2}$$TeO$$_{6}$$, but also for the universality of the strongly correlated state in a broad range of quantum magnetic systems.


Solving the puzzles of the decay of the heaviest known proton-emitting nucleus $$^{185}$$Bi

$$^{185}$$Bi is the heaviest known proton emitting isotope. Its decay had been observed, but the assumed ground-state lifetime ($$sim$$$$60~mu$$s) was incorrect, leading to unexplained hindrance. With two new experiments at Argonne National Laboratory, two states were clearly identified. One is the proton-emitting ground-state (spin 1/2$$^+$$, half-life: 2.8$$^{+2.3}_{-1.0}$$ $$mu$$s), the second is a 58(2) $$mu$$s $$gamma$$-decaying isomer. The new data show the inversion of the ground and isomeric states compared to neighboring Bi isotopes. This is the only known example of a ground-state proton decay to a daughter nucleus ($$^{184}$$Pb) with a major shell closure.

The long-lived $$^{60}$$Fe (with a half-life of 2.62 Myr) is a crucial diagnostic of active nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way galaxy and in supernovae near the solar system. The neutron-capture reaction $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe on $$^{59}$$Fe (half-life=44.5 days) is the key reaction for the production of $$^{60}$$Fe in massive stars. This reaction cross section has been previously constrained by the Coulomb dissociation experiment, which offered partial constraint on the E1 $$gamma$$-ray strength function but a negligible constraint on the M1 and E2 components. In this work, for the first time, we use the surrogate ratio method to experimentally determine the $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe cross sections in which all the components are included. We derived a Maxwellian-averaged cross section of 27.5$$pm$$3.5 mb at $$kT$$ = 30 keV and 13.4$$pm$$1.7 mb at $$kT$$ = 90 keV, roughly 10%-20% higher than previous estimates. We analyzed the impact of our new reaction rates in nucleosynthesis models of massive stars and found that uncertainties in the production of $$^{60}$$Fe from the $$^{59}$$Fe(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{60}$$Fe rate are at most 25$$%$$. We conclude that stellar physics uncertainties now play a major role in the accurate evaluation of the stellar production of $$^{60}$$Fe.

Using 980.6 $$rm fb^{-1}$$ of data collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $$e^+e^-$$ collider, we present a measurement of the branching fraction of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay $$Lambda_c^+ to p omega$$. A clear $$Lambda_c^+$$ signal is observed for $$Lambda_c^+ to p omega$$ with a statistical significance of 9.1 standard deviations, and we measure the ratio of branching fractions $${cal B}(Lambda_c^+ to p omega)/{cal B}(Lambda_c^+ to p K^- pi^+) = (1.32 pm 0.12 (rm stat) pm 0.10 (rm syst))times 10^{-2}$$, from which we infer the branching fraction $${cal B}(Lambda_c^+ to p omega) = (8.27 pm 0.75 (rm stat) pm 0.62 (rm syst) pm 0.42 (rm ref))times 10^{-4}$$. The first quoted uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third from the reference mode $$Lambda_c^+ to p K^- pi^+$$.
