Metalloid substitution elevates simultaneously the strength and ductility of face-centered-cubic high-entropy alloys

Recently-developed high-entropy alloys (HEAs) containing multiple principal metallic elements have ex-tended the compositional space of solid solutions and the range of their mechanical properties. Here we show that the realm of possibilities can be further expanded through substituting the constituent metals with metalloids, which are desirable for tailoring strength/ductility because they have chemical interactions and atomic sizes distinctly different from the host metallic elements. Specifically, the metalloid substitution increases local lattice distortion and short-range chemical inhomogeneities to elevate strength, and in the meantime reduces the stacking fault energy to discourage dynamic recovery and encourage defect accumulation via partial-dislocation-mediated activities. These impart potent dislocation storage to improve the strain hardening capability, which is essential for sustaining large tensile elongation. As such, metalloid substitution into HEAs evades the normally expected strength-ductility trade-off, enabling an unusual synergy of high tensile strength and extraordinary ductility for these single-phase solid solutions.

本レビュー論文では、関連分野を研究する科学者の意識調査と既存文献の調査を実施し、地球温暖化の加速が寒冷な北方地域を地域および世界の農業セクター拡大にとってますます魅力的なターゲットにしていることを明らかにした。ただし、こうした活動の持続可能な長期的発展は、信頼性のある関連知見に対し全てのステークホルダーが容易にアクセスできる場合にのみ実現できる、という共通認識があることも明らかになった。特に、北方地域における農業の拡大は、温室効果ガス収支や生物多様性、生態系サービスに対し、負の影響をもたらす傾向にあることが明らかになってきている。以上より、寒冷な北方地域における農業の拡大と強化は、社会的な向上とニュートラルな環境影響とを両立できる計画の下で遂行される必要がある。

New $$alpha$$-emitting isotope $$^{214}$$U and abnormal enhancement of $$alpha$$-particle clustering in lightest uranium isotopes

A new $$alpha$$-emitting isotope $$^{214}$$U, produced by the fusion-evaporation reaction $$^{182}$$W($$^{36}$$Ar,4n)$$^{214}$$U, was identified by employing the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS and the recoil-$$alpha$$ correlation technique. More precise $$alpha$$-decay properties of even-even nuclei $$^{216,218}$$U were also measured in the reactions of $$^{40}$$Ar, $$^{40}$$Ca beams with $$^{180,182,184}$$W targets. By combining the experimental data, improved $$alpha$$-decay reduced widths $$delta$$$$^{2}$$ for the even-even Po-Pu nuclei in the vicinity of the magic neutron number ${it N}$ = 126 are deduced. Their systematic trends are discussed in terms of the ${it N}$ $$_{it p}$$ ${it N}$ $$_{it n}$$ scheme in order to study the influence of proton-neutron interaction on $$alpha$$ decay in this region of nuclei. It is strikingly found that the reduced widths of $$^{214,216}$$U are significantly enhanced by a factor of two as compared with the ${it N}$ $$_{it p}$$ ${it N}$ $$_{it n}$$ systematics for the 84 $$leq$$ ${it Z}$ $$leq$$ 90 and ${it N}$ $$<$$ 126 even-even nuclei. The abnormal enhancement is interpreted by the strong monopole interaction between the valence protons and neutrons occupying the $$pi$$1${it f}$ $$_{7/2}$$ and $$nu$$1${it f}$ $$_{5/2}$$ spin-orbit partner orbits, which is supported by the large-scale shell model calculation.

Nanozymes are promising alternatives to natural enzymes, but their use remains limited owing to poor specificity. Overcoming this is extremely challenging due to the intrinsic structural complexity of these systems. We report theoretical design and experimental realization of a series of heterogeneous molybdenum single-atom nanozymes (named Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{x}$$-C), wherein we find that the peroxidase-like specificity is well regulated by the coordination numbers of single Mo sites. The resulting Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{3}$$-C catalyst shows exclusive peroxidase-like behavior. It achieves this behavior via a homolytic pathway, whereas Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{2}$$-C and Mo$$_{rm{SA}}$$-N$$_{4}$$-C catalysts have a different heterolytic pathway. The mechanism of this coordination-number-dependent enzymatic specificity is attributed to geometrical structure differences and orientation relationships of the frontier molecular orbitals.

Stacking fault driven phase transformation in CrCoNi medium entropy alloy

In CrCoNi, a so-called medium-entropy alloy, an fcc-to-hcp phase transformation has long been anticipated. Here, we report an in situ loading study with neutron diffraction, which revealed a bulk fcc-to-hcp phase transformation in CrCoNi at 15 K under tensile loading. By correlating deformation characteristics of the fcc phase with the development of the hcp phase, it is shown that the nucleation of the hcp phase was triggered by intrinsic stacking faults. The confirmation of a bulk phase transformation adds to the myriads of deformation mechanisms available in CrCoNi, which together underpin the unusually large ductility at low temperatures.

The long carrier lifetime and defect tolerance in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are major contributors to the superb performance of MHP optoelectronic devices. Large polarons were reported to be responsible for the long carrier lifetime. Yet microscopic mechanisms of the large polaron formation, including the so-called phonon melting, are still under debate. Here, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering experiments and first-principles density-functional theory calculations were employed to investigate the lattice vibrations (or phonon dynamics) in methylammonium lead iodide, a prototypical example of MHPs. Our findings are that optical phonons lose temporal coherence gradually with increasing temperature which vanishes at the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition. Surprisingly, however, we found that the spatial coherence is still retained throughout the decoherence process. We argue that the temporally decoherent and spatially coherent vibrations contribute to the formation of large polarons in this metal halide perovskite.

Extremely high dislocation density and deformation pathway of CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy at ultralow temperature

The deformation behavior of CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy was investigated by in situ neutron diffraction at an ultralow temperature of 15 K. Analysis of the diffraction peak widths showed an extremely high dislocation density at 15 K, reaching $$sim$$10$$^{16}$$ m$$^{-2}$$. In addition, the dislocation density was found to closely follow the development of texture caused by deformation. In contrast to deformation by dislocation slip at room temperature, the ultralow-temperature deformation also involved stacking faults, twinning and serrations. The deformation pathway at ultralow temperature is outlined which is responsible for the extraordinary strength-ductility combination.

Magnetic-field and composition tuned antiferromagnetic instability in the quantum spin-liquid candidate NaYbO$$_2$$

NaYbO$$_2$$ has been reported as a possible host for the quantum spin-liquid state. Here, the composition-dependent polycrystalline Na$$_{1-x}$$YbO$$_2$$ ($$x = 0$$, 0.03, and 0.07) has been investigated by combining high-field magnetizations and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. For the $$x = 0$$ sample, no signature of a magnetic order is observed down to 0.3 K. Inelastic neutron scattering measurement suggests a continuous low-energy excitation spectrum centered at momentum transfer $$(Q) sim 1.25$$~$AA$^{-1}$$ and extending up to energy transfer $$(E) sim 2.0$$~meV. In contrast, $$x = 0.03$$ and 0.07 samples exhibit magnetic transitions at 1.1 and 2.3 K, respectively. High-field magnetization measurements indicate similar behaviors for $$x = 0$$ and 0.03 samples including plateau-like features at the 1/3 saturated magnetization, which implies that the spin disorder in the $$x = 0$$ sample might be suppressed preceding the emergence of the up-up-down phase. This composition- and field-dependent study allows us to construct complete phase diagrams indicating that NaYbO$$_2$$ is a promising candidate for the quantum spin-liquid state in close proximity to the antiferromagnetic instability tuned by the application of magnetic fields as well as controlling the concentration of Na$$^+$$ ion vacancies.

Selective removal of radiocesium from micaceous clay for post-accident soil decontamination by temperature-controlled Mg-leaching in a column

The effective and efficient removal of radioactive Cs from contaminated soil is highly urgent for the nuclear post-accident remediation. In present study, we achieved rapid Cs desorption from both a typical micaceous clay (i.e., vermiculitized biotite, VB) and actually contaminated soil by high-speed ion exchange through temperature-controlled continuous leaching with Mg-solutions in a column reactor. Cs-sorbed VB was firstly employed as a soil surrogate to explore the macro-Cs desorption process and micro-mechanism in detail.

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{223}$$U

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{223}$$U was observed in the fusion-evaporation reaction $$^{187}$$Re($$^{40}$$Ar,p3n) by using fast digital pulse processing technique. Two $$alpha$$-decay branches of $$^{223}$$U feeding the ground state and 244 keV excited state of $$^{219}$$Th were identified by establishing the decay chain $$^{223}$$U$$rightarrow$$$$^{219}$$Th$$rightarrow$$$$^{215}$$Ra$$rightarrow$$$$^{211}$$Rn. The $$alpha$$-particle energy for the ground-state to ground-state transition of $$^{223}$$U was determined to be 8993(17) keV, 213 keV higher than the previous value, the half-life was updated to be 62$$^{+14}_{-10} mu$$s. Evolution of nuclear structure for $$N$$=131 even-$$Z$$ isotones from Po to U was discussed in the frameworks of nuclear mass and reduced $$alpha$$-decay width, a weakening octupole deformation in the ground state of $$^{223}$$U relative to its lighter isotones $$^{219}$$Ra and $$^{211}$$Th was suggested.

2017年4月に開催された国際会議Transport2017において、重イオン核反応モデルの国際的な比較が議論された。重イオン加速器の安全評価や宇宙飛行士の被ばく評価等で重要な役割を果たすため、世界中で重イオン核反応の様々な理論モデルが開発されている。本研究では、辺の長さが20fmの直方体に320個の中性子と陽子をランダム配置し、それらが70fm/cの間に起こす散乱の回数やエネルギーを計算した。ここでは、特にパイオンやその前駆体であるデルタ共鳴の生成に注目して比較を行った。参加コードは、個々の粒子の時間発展を追うQMD型コードと、粒子の位置や運動量の確率分布を決めておき、散乱や崩壊が発生したときそれらを乱数サンプリングするBUU型コードがあり、発表者が用いたJQMDは前者に属する。本研究により、計算における時間刻みが各コードによる結果の差の主な原因であることが分かった。さらに、今後のJQMDの改良方針の策定に有益な知見を得ることができた。

Asymmetrically optimized structure in a high-$$T_{rm c}$$ single unit-cell FeSe superconductor

本研究では、SrTiO$$_{3}$$基板上の単層FeSeの構造が上下方向に非対称化していることを報告する。SrTiO$$_{3}$$基板上の単層FeSeは、鉄系超伝導体において最も高い転移温度(50K以上)を示す。全反射高速陽電子回折(TRHEPD)を用いた構造解析の結果、真空側と界面側のSe-Fe層間隔は異なり、上下方向に非対称な構造であることがわかった。これらの層間隔および結合角の平均値は、圧力下のバルクFeSeにおいて高い転移温度を示す最適値と一致している。したがって、SrTiO$$_{3}$$基板上の単層FeSeは非対称化することにより高い転移温度を発現するための最適構造を形成したと考えられる。

As a generic property, all substances transfer heat through microscopic collisions of constituent particles. A solid conducts heat through both transverse and longitudinal acoustic phonons, but a liquid employs only longitudinal vibrations. As a result, a solid is usually thermally more conductive than a liquid. In canonical viewpoints, such a difference also serves as the dynamic signature distinguishing a solid from a liquid. Here, we report liquid-like thermal conduction observed in the crystalline AgCrSe$$_{2}$$. The transverse acoustic phonons are completely suppressed by the ultrafast dynamic disorder while the longitudinal acoustic phonons are strongly scattered but survive, and are thus responsible for the intrinsically ultralow thermal conductivity. This scenario is applicable to a wide variety of layered compounds with heavy intercalants in the van der Waals gaps, manifesting a broad implication on suppressing thermal conduction. These microscopic insights might reshape the fundamental understanding on thermal transport properties of matter and open up a general opportunity to optimize performances of thermoelectrics.

2017年4月に開催された国際会議Transport2017において、重イオン核反応モデルの国際的な比較が議論された。重イオン加速器の安全評価や宇宙飛行士の被ばく評価等で重要な役割を果たすため、世界中で重イオン核反応の様々な理論モデルが開発されている。本研究はモデル間の共通点と差異を明らかにし、各モデルの問題点を明らかにした。比較において、辺の長さが20fmの直方体に320個の中性子と320個の陽子をランダム配置し、それらが時間発展に伴って起こす散乱の回数や散乱時のエネルギーなどを計算する条件が設定された。また、結果以外にも、理論モデルを構成するアルゴリズムについても比較を行った。発表者は重イオン核反応モデルJQMD(JAERI Quantum Molecular Dynamics)を用いて計算を行い、世界で開発されている15の計算コードによる計算結果と比較した。コードアルゴリズムの比較では、JQMDは必ず陽子から 優先的に衝突確率を計算し、その後に中性子の衝突を計算するため、物理描像の妥当性が指摘された。一方、JQMDは他のモデルとほぼ同じ計算結果を出すことも判明した。衝突回数や運動量の計算値が平均から2倍以上乖離するモデルもある中で、JQMDは本計算条件で安定した性能を発揮することが確認された。

This paper introduces super absorbent polymer valves and colorimetric sensing reagents as enabling components of soft, skin-mounted microfluidic devices designed to capture, store and chemically analyze sweat released from eccrine glands. The valving technology enables robust means for guiding the flow of sweat from an inlet location into a collection of isolated reservoirs, in a well-defined sequence. Analysis in these reservoirs involves a color responsive indicator of chloride concentration with a formulation tailored to offer stable operation with sensitivity optimized for the relevant physiological range. Evaluations on human subjects with comparisons against ex situ analysis illustrate the practical utility of these advances.

Hydroformylation of olefins by a rhodium single-atom catalyst with activity comparable to RhCl(PPh$$_{3}$$)$$_{3}$$

Single-atom catalysts have the advantages of both homogeneous catalysts, such as "isolated sites", and heterogeneous catalysts, such as stability and reusability, and thus would be a promising alternative to traditional homogeneous catalysts. In the hydroformylation of olefins, single-atom Rh catalysts supported on ZnO nanowires demonstrate similar efficiency (TON $$approx$$ 40000) compared to that of homogeneous Wilkinson's catalyst (TON $$approx$$ 19000). HAADF-STEM and infrared CO chemisorption experiments identified isolated Rh atoms on the support. XPS and XANES spectra indicate that the electronic state of Rh is almost metallic. The catalysts are about one or two orders of magnitude more active than most reported heterogeneous catalysts and can be reused four times without an obvious decline in activity.

炉心損傷事故(CDA)の炉内格納(IVR)はナトリウム冷却高速炉(SFR)の安全特性向上において極めて重要である。SFRのCDAにおいては、溶融炉心物質が炉容器の下部プレナムへ再配置し、構造物へ重大な熱的影響を及ぼし、炉容器の溶融貫通に至る可能性がある。この再配置過程の評価を可能とし、SFRのCDAではIVRで終息することが最も確からしいことを示すため、SFRのCDAにおける物質再配置挙動の評価手法を開発する研究計画が実施された。この計画では、炉心領域からの溶融物質流出挙動の解析手法、溶融炉心物質のナトリウムプール中への侵入挙動、デブリベッド挙動のシミュレーション手法を開発した。
