Dimensional reduction by geometrical frustration in a cubic antiferromagnet composed of tetrahedral clusters

Dimensionality is a critical factor in determining the properties of solids and is an apparent built- in character of the crystal structure. However, it can be an emergent and tunable property in geometrically frustrated spin systems. Here, we study the spin dynamics of the tetrahedral cluster antiferromagnet, pharmacosiderite, via muon spin resonance and neutron scattering. We find that the spin correlation exhibits a two-dimensional characteristic despite the isotropic connectivity of tetrahedral clusters made of spin 5/2 Fe$$^{3+}$$ ions in the three-dimensional cubic crystal, which we ascribe to two-dimensionalisation by geometrical frustration based on spin wave calculations. Moreover, we suggest that even one-dimensionalisation occurs in the decoupled layers, generating low-energy and one-dimensional excitation modes, causing large spin fluctuation in the classical spin system.

For the skyrmion-hosting intermetallic Gd$$_2$$PdSi$$_3$$ with centrosymmetric hexagonal lattice and triangular net of rare earth sites, we report a thorough investigation of the magnetic phase diagram. Our work reveals a magnetic phase with an isotropic value of the critical field for all orientations, where the magnetic ordering vector ${bf q}$ is depinned from its preferred directions in the basal plane. The bulk nature of the skyrmion lattice and of other magnetic phases was evidenced by specific-heat measurements. Resistivity anisotropy, likely originating from partial gapping of the density of states along ${bf q}$ in this Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida magnet, is picked up via the planar Hall effect (PHE). The PHE confirms the single-${bf q}$ nature of the magnetic order when the field is in the hexagonal plane, and allows one to detect the preferred directions of ${bf q}$. Several scenarios for the depinned phase are discussed on the basis of the data.

A spin-1/2 triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHAF) is a prototypical frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits remarkable quantum many-body effects that arise from the synergy between spin frustration and quantum fluctuation. The ground-state properties of a spin-1/2 TLHAF are theoretically well understood. However, magnetic excitations are less well understood and the theoretical consensus is limited. The experimental study of the magnetic excitations in spin-1/2 TLHAFs has also been limited. Here we show the whole picture of magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 TLHAF Ba$$_{3}$$CoSb$$_{2}$$O$$_{9}$$ investigated by inelastic neutron scattering. Significantly different from the theory, the excitation spectra have a three-stage energy structure. The lowest first stage is composed of dispersion branches of single-magnon excitations. The second and third stages are dispersive continua accompanied by columnar continuum extending above 10 meV, which is six times larger than the exchange interaction J=1.67 meV. Our results indicate the necessity of a new theoretical framework.

Previous experimental studies of superradiance (SR) in multi-level systems have been explainable using the predictions of the well-known simple two-level SR model. However our recent study using EUV free-electron laser excitation of helium atoms, where SR was observed at wavelengths of 502 nm, 668 nm, and 728 nm, revealed behaviour which necessitates a full multi-level treatment of the SR development. In this paper, we report simulations of the initial excitation by the FEL pulses, and the subsequent development of multi-level SR. The results of the simulation reproduce the experimental findings, and reveal that competitive SR on two transitions with a common upper level plays an important role in the development of the system.

$$gamma$$線分光によって$$^{12}_{Lambda}$$Cハイパー核のレベル構造を精密に測定した。ゲルマニウム検出器群Hyperball2を用いて、$$^{12}$$C$$(pi^{+}, K^{+}gamma)$$反応からの4本の$$gamma$$線遷移を同定することに成功した。基底状態スピン二重項$$(2^{-}, 1^{-}_{1})$$のエネルギー間隔は直接遷移$$M1$$$$gamma$$線により、$$161.5pm0.3$$(stat)$$pm0.3$$(syst)keVと測定された。また、励起準位である$$1^{-}_{2}$$$$1^{-}_{3}$$について、それぞれ、$$2832pm3pm4$$, keVと$$6050pm8pm7$$, keVと励起エネルギーを決定した。これらの測定された$$^{12}_{Lambda}$$Cの励起エネルギーは反応分光による$$lambda$$ハイパー核の実験研究において決定的な基準となる。

We have investigated effects of applied uniaxial pressure ($$p$$) on magnetic phase transitions in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO$$_{2}$$ (CFO) and a slightly Ga-substituted compound CuFe$$_{1-x}$$Ga$$_{x}$$O$$_{2}$$ (CFGO) with $$x$$ = 0.018. We have performed neutron diffraction, spherical neutron polarimetry, magnetic susceptibility and pyroelectric measurements under $$p$$ up to 100 MPa applied on the [1$$bar1$$0] surfaces of the single crystal samples.

We have investigated effects of applied uniaxial pressure ($$p$$) on magnetic phase transitions in a triangular lattice antiferromagnet CuFeO$$_{2}$$ (CFO) and a slightly Ga-substituted compound CuFe$$_{1-x}$$Ga$$_{x}$$O$$_{2}$$ (CFGO) with $$x$$ = 0.018 by spherical neutron polarimetry. In both of CFO and CFGO ($$x$$ = 0.018), the application of $$p$$ significantly increases the transition temperature from the paramagnetic phase to a collinear incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase. This suggests that the application of $$p$$ breaks equilateral symmetry of the triangular lattice and partially relieves geometrical spin frustration, which generally suppresses long-range magnetic orderings. Thus we demonstrated that uniaxial pressure can be an effective tool to control magnetic phase transitions in frustrated magnets.

We have investigated spin-wave excitations in a four-sublattice (4SL) magnetic ground state of a frustrated magnet CuFeO$$_2$$, in which "electromagnon" excitation has been discovered by recent terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. We have performed high-energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements in the 4SL phase, resolving fine structures of the lower-energy spin-wave branch near the zone center. We have developed a model Hamiltonian to describe the spin-wave excitations. The determined Hamiltonian parameters have successfully reproduced the spin-wave dispersion relations and intensity maps obtained in the inelastic neutron scattering measurements. The results of the spin-wave analysis have also revealed physical pictures of the magnon and electromagnon modes in the 4SL phase, suggesting that collinear and noncollinear characters of the two spin-wave modes are the keys to understand the dynamical coupling between the spins and electric dipole moments in this system.

熱処理温度923Kから運転温度5KまでのNb$$_{3}$$Sn素線とステンレス鋼の熱膨張率の違いによって導体内には残留歪が生じる。Nb$$_{3}$$Sn素線の超伝導特性は残留歪の状態によって大きく変化するため、その特性を評価するためには残留歪の状態を把握する必要がある。しかし、複雑な構造とジャケット材の内側に素線が配置されているため、導体内の素線の歪を直接測定した研究はこれまでない。一方、J-PARCで2008年から運転が開始された工学材料回折装置「匠」は中性子回折を用いて歪として相対精度0.02%で測定することが可能である。本研究では、匠による中性子回折をITER TF導体の残留歪の測定に適用した。中性子回折では格子面間隔の変化により導体内の各相の歪を決定することが可能である。これにより、素線の残留歪の発生機構及び歪状態と超伝導性能の関係を明らかにすることが可能となった。

4SEASONS is a Fermi chopper spectrometer, which is in operation in Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), J-PARC. It is intended to provide high-efficiency measurement of weak inelastic signals on novel spin and lattice dynamics with thermal neutrons. For this purpose, the spectrometer utilizes the coupled moderator and advanced instrumental design such as an elliptic-shaped converging neutron guide with high-critical angle supermirrors inside, long (2.5 m) position sensitive detectors, and a Fermi chopper feasible for multiple-incident-energy (multi-$$E_{rm i}$$) measurement with the repetition rate multiplication technique. Here we show detailed design of the spectrometer, evaluation of its performance, and some examples of measurements.

Exchange-striction associated with the elliptical proper helical magnetic structure in the ferroelectric phase of CuFe$$_{1-y}$$Ga$$_{y}$$O$$_{2}$$

Detailed magnetic structure in the ferroelectric phase of CuFe$$_{1-y}$$Ga$$_{y}$$O$$_{2}$$ has been recently determined to be proper helical structure with the ellipcity of $$sim$$ 0.9 by the comprehensive neutron diffraction study. In the present study, we have investigated the lattice modulation associated with the elliptical magnetic structure, using resonant X-ray diffraction measurements on CuFe$$_{0.965}$$Ga$$_{0.035}$$O$$_{2}$$. We observed the superlattice reflection indexed as (0, 1+2$$q$$$$_{rm m}$$, 0), where $$q$$$$_{rm m}$$ is the wave number of the magnetic modulation. The energy spectrum near the Fe-$$K$$ absorption edge for the superlattice peak intensity conforms with that for the fundamental (0, 2, 0) intensity, suggesting that the superlattice modulation is at least associated with the displacements of the Fe ions, The origin of the superlattice modulation is discussed within the exchange-striction model.
