We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$$_2$$Cu$$_2$$Mo$$_3$$O$$_{12}$$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$$frac{1}{2}$$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a unique class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

EuPtSi with the cubic chiral structure exhibits a skyrmion phase under magnetic field. We succeeded in growing high-quality single crystals by the Bridgman method. Fermi surface splitting reflecting the noncentrosymmetric structure was successfully observed experimentally.

Two types of high-energy events have been detected from thunderstorms. One is "terrestrial gamma-ray flashes" (TGFs), sub-millisecond emissions coinciding with lightning discharges. The other is minute-lasting "gamma-ray glows". Although both phenomena are thought to originate from relativistic runaway electron avalanches in strong electric fields, the connection between them is not well understood. Here we report unequivocal simultaneous detection of a gamma-ray glow termination and a downward TGF, observed from the ground. During a winter thunderstorm in Japan on 9 January 2018, our detectors caught a gamma-ray glow, which moved for $$/sim$$ 100 s with ambient wind, and then abruptly ceased with a lightning discharge. Simultaneously, the detectors observed photonuclear reactions triggered by a downward TGF, whose radio pulse was located within $$sim$$ 1 km from where the glow ceased. It is suggested that the highly-electrified region producing the glow was related to the initiation of the downward TGF.

Physical properties of the single-crystalline U$$_2$$Ir$$_3$$Si$$_5$$, a new ternary uranium compound with U$$_2$$Co$$_3$$Si$$_5$$-type orthorhombic structure, are investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and electrical resistivity. This compound undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition followed by a first-order phase transition at lower temperature. A possible mechanism of the first-order transition is the occurrence of a magnetic magnetic quadrupolar order, resulting from the quasi-one-dimensional uranium zigzag chain.

An on-ground observation program for high energy atmospheric phenomena in winter thunderstorms along Japan Sea has been performed via lightning measurements of $$gamma$$-ray radiation, atmospheric electric field and low-frequency radio band. On February 11, 2017, the radiation detectors recorded $$gamma$$-ray emission lasting for 75 sec. The $$gamma$$-ray spectrum extended up to 20 MeV and was reproduced by a cutoff power-law model with a photon index of 1.36$$^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$$, being consistent with a Bremsstrahlung radiation from a thundercloud (as known as a $$gamma$$-ray glow). Then the $$gamma$$-ray glow was abruptly terminated with a nearby lightning discharge. The low-frequency radio monitors, installed $$sim$$50 km away from Noto School, recorded intra/inter-cloud discharges spreading over $$sim$$60km area with a $$sim$$300 ms duration. The timing of the $$gamma$$-ray termination coincided with the moment when a sequence of intra/inter-cloud discharges passed 0.7 km horizontally away from the radiation monitors. The atmospheric electric-field measurement presented that negative charge was located in the cloud base and not neutralized by the lightning discharge. This indicates that the $$gamma$$-ray source was located at an higher region than the cloud base.

We succeeded in growing single crystals of the series of EuCu$$_2$$(Ge$$_{1-x}$$Si$$_x$$)$$_2$$ compounds.Physical property measurements demonstrate a maximum of the antiferromagnetic transition temperature appears at $$x = 0.5$$. Antiferromagnetism then disappears around $$x = 0.7$$ followed by a heavy-fermion formation at higher concentrations. These observations follow the Doniach phase diagram as a function of $$x$$.

東京電力福島第一原子力発電所(以下、「1F」という)は炉心溶融に至ったと報告されており、炉内構造物は原形を留めておらず、溶融燃料と混在し複雑狭隘な状態にあると想定される。このような状態の中、燃料デブリ等の取出しに向けて、熱影響が少なくスタンドオフを長く取れるアブレイシブウォータージェット(以下「AWJ」)切断技術について、2012年度から3カ年で切断試験を実施し技術開発を進めてきており、燃料デブリ等の取出しに有効な工法であることを確認した。初年度の成果は、既報告書"JAEA-Technology 2013-041 アブレイシブウォータージェット切断工法による炉内溶融金属等の取出しに向けた技術開発"で報告済みであるが、本報告書は、これを含む3ヵ年の集大成として取り纏めたものである。AWJ切断技術は、切断時に使用するアブレイシブが二次廃棄物として発生するものの、圧力容器下部等に堆積した厚み等の不明な燃料デブリや炉内構造物の取出しが可能であることを切断試験により確認し、実機に適用できる見通しを得た。

Superconducting characteristics and Fermi surfaces of Zr$$_2$$Co are experimentally studied on a single crystal sample grown by Bridgman technique. Thermodynamic quantities in the superconducting state such as specific heat and magnetization show deviation from a single-gap the BCS model and can be attributed on the band structure with the dominant contribution of Zr-4$$d$$ and Co-3$$d$$ components.

Fermi surface properties of illuminate NiSbS and PbBiSe have been clarified by de Haas-van Alphen effect, resistivity and specific heat measurements. Fermi surfaces were found to split into two, reflecting the non-centrosymmetric crystal structure. The splitting energies have been estimated experimentally. Those are originated from spin-orbit interactions.

The nuclide $$^{262}$$Db was produced in the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F,5$$n$$)$$^{262}$$Db reaction at beam energies of 103.1 and 97.4 MeV. Decay properties of $$^{262}$$Db were investigated with a rotating wheel apparatus for $$alpha$$ and spontaneous fission (SF) spectrometry under low background conditions attained by a gas-jet transport system coupled to the RIKEN gas-filled recoil ion separator. Decay data for $$^{262}$$Db and its $$alpha$$-decay daughter nuclide $$^{258}$$Lr was improved in statistical accuracy. Examples are the improved half-lives of 33.8$$^{+4.4}_{-3.5}$$ and 3.54$$^{+0.46}_{-0.36}$$ s for $$^{262}$$Db and $$^{258}$$Lr, respectively. The production cross sections for the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F,5$$n$$)$$^{262}$$Db reaction were determined to be 2.1$$pm$$0.7 nb at 103.1 MeV and 0.23$$^{+0.18}_{-0.11}$$ nb at 97.4 MeV, whereas, those for the $$^{248}$$Cm($$^{19}$$F,4$$n$$)$$^{263}$$Db reaction were less than 0.064 nb (at 103.1 MeV) and 0.13 nb (at 97.4 MeV). The cross sections are compared with a statistical model calculation carried out by the JAEA group.

Some latest coupled-analysis results of lanthanides (Lns) ($$^{151}$$Eu and $$^{155}$$Gd)-M$"o$ssbauer structure and XRD lattice-parameter (a$$_{0}$$) data of defect-fluorite (DF) oxides with the new defect-crystal-chemistry (DCC) a$$_{0}$$ model have been presented. This is thus the first report of our ongoing efforts to further elaborate the DCC model and extend its applicability to more various systems including pyrochlore (P)-type stabilized zirconias and stabilized hafnias.
