In recent years, biology researchers elucidate the biological and behavioral mechanisms based on measurement of observation data. Then, it is accompanied with time cost and misrecognition to measure a trajectory of creature from observation data based on human eyes. Therefore, biology researchers require automated measurement and recording support system. In this paper, we introduce a new method of swimming trajectory generation for analyzing of medaka behavior. Then, in order to recognize medaka behavior a method which combines orientation code matching by rotation invariant multiple-templates and particle filter based on multiple-likelihood functions is introduced. Through experimentations we prove the effectiveness of our method.

We developed a non-matrix matched U-Pb dating method for calcite by using LA-ICP-MS. The excimer LA was set to generate a low-aspect-ratio crater to minimize downhole U-Pb fractionation. We used He sample ablation gas mixed with Ar carrier gas and additional trace N$$_{2}$$ gas to create a robust plasma setup. The use of N$$_{2}$$ additional gas allowed for low oxide molecular yield for high-sensitivity interface cones with the ICP shield electrode disconnected. Moreover, this resulted in robust ICP plasma against different matrixes in LA aerosols owing to efficient dissociation-ionization of the aerosols by increased plasma temperature. The above setup helped accomplish accurate U-Pb dating of calcite samples by using SRM 612 glass as the standard. We applied this method to the following calcite samples: (1) recently-proposed reference material named WC-1 with a determined U-Pb age of 254.6$$pm$$3.2 Ma and (2) a well-preserved fossil specimen of blastoid $$Pentremites$$ sp. with an estimated age of $$sim$$339-318 Ma. The resultant U-Pb ages of the WC-1 and $$Pentremites$$ samples were 260.0$$pm$$6.7 Ma and 332$$pm$$12 Ma, respectively, which indicate accurate U-Pb dating by this method. Before this U-Pb dating, quantitative distribution maps of the U, Th, and Pb isotopes of each sample were obtained using the LA-ICP-MS imaging technique to select suitable areas for dating.

Dc magnetization measurements have been performed on the orthorhombic Ising ferromagnet Urge. We observed a clear first-order reorientation transition with a small hysteresis and estimated the tricritical point to be around 4 K. The magnetization and the thermal expansion data indicate the presence of a characteristic temperature of about 1 K.

On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake occurred in the Tohoku region of Japan, and a large tsunami hit the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F), resulting in a nuclear accident. Despite the years that have passed since the accident, decommissioning remains a concern. Radiation measurement techniques are very important for accelerating the decommissioning and ensuring low radiation exposure to workers. Our gamma-ray imaging system is the detection device for determining the three dimensional radioactive distributions of nuclear fuel debris, measuring high-energy gamma rays (greater than 1 MeV). Silicon semiconductor detectors are among the candidate detectors for radiation measurements in our system because of their radiation-hardness and high counting rate capability. We have been developing a stacked amorphous-silicon (Si)/crystal-Si heterojunction Si strip detector, which has 1-mm-pitch striped electrodes (0.5 mm wide) and 1.2-mm-pitch stacked technology. The detector consists of an Si strip mounted on a thin printed circuit board, front-end readout electronics with a complementary metal oxide semiconductor application specific integrated circuit, and a field programmable gate array. The threshold level of energy deposition of each pulse signal in each channel can be set from the application-specific integrated circuit, and gamma-ray images with energy discrimination can be obtained. The energy threshold level for discrimination of $$^{60}$$Co gamma rays from $$^{137}$$Cs gamma rays was investigated experimentally and by means of simulation, and it was found to be about 500 keV. Therefore, our Si strip detector has the required position sensitivity and energy discrimination ability for identifying high-energy gamma-ray source distributions.

Two inherent crossovers of the diffusion process in glass-forming liquids

We report on incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering measurements examining a self-diffusion process in two types of glass-forming liquids, namely a molecular liquid (3-methylpentane) and an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide). We have experimentally demonstrated that both liquids exhibit two crossovers in the momentum transfer ($$Q$$) dependence of the self-correlation function, which is basically described by the stretched exponential function, $$exp [-(t/tau)^beta]$$. The first crossover point ($$Q approx 0.2$$~$AA$^{-1}$$) corresponds to a crossover from Fickian ($$beta = 1$$) to non-Fckian ($$beta ne 1$$) diffusion attributed to dynamical correlation. On the other hand, the second one at $$Q approx 0.8$$~$AA$^{-1}$$ is associated with the crossover from Gaussian to non-Gaussian behavior. It is remarkable that the stretching exponent $$beta$$ gradually changes in between the two crossover points. We consider that the two crossovers are the universal feature for glass-forming liquids.

Neutron scattering studies on short- and long-range layer structures and related dynamics in imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Alkyl-methyl-imidazolium ionic liquids C$$n$$mimX ($$n$$: alkyl-carbon number, X: anion) have short-range layer structures consisting of ionic and neutral (alkylchain) domains. To investigate the temperature dependences of the interlayer, interionic group, and inter-alkylchain correlations, we have measured the neutron diffraction (ND) of C$$n$$mimPF$$_6$$ ($$n$$ = 16, 9.5, 8). The quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) of C16mimPF$$_6$$ was also measured to study the dynamics of each correlation. C16mimPF$$_6$$ shows a first-order transition between the liquid (L) and liquid crystalline (LC) phases at $$T_{rm c}$$ = 394 K. C8mimPF$$_6$$ exhibits a glass transition at $$T_{rm g}$$ = 200 K. C9.5mimPF$$_6$$ has both transitions at $$T_{rm c}$$ = 225 K and $$T_{rm g}$$ = 203 K. In the ND experiments, all samples exhibit three peaks corresponding to the correlations mentioned above. The widths of the interlayer peak at ca. 0.2 $AA$^{-1}$$ changed drastically at the L-LC transitions, while the interionic peaks at ca. 1 $AA$^{-1}$$ exhibited a small jump at $$T_{rm c}$$. The peak position and area of the three peaks did not change much at the transition. The structural changes were minimal at $$T_{rm g}$$. The QENS experiments demonstrated that the relaxation time of the interlayer motion increased tenfold at $$T_{rm c}$$, while those of other motions were monotonous in the whole temperature region. The structural and dynamical changes are characteristic of the L-LC transition in imidazolium-based ionic liquids.

Diffusion behavior of methanol molecules confined in cross-linked phenolic resins studied using neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulations

The dynamics of methanol confined in highly cross-linked phenolic resins was investigated using incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The QENS analysis for adeuterated phenolic resin and both deuterated and nondeuterated methanol indicated the presence of resin dynamics induced by methanol invasion and confined diffusion of the methanol molecules. QENS results suggested that methanol had a diffusion coefficient of 1.6 $$times$$ 10$$^{-6}$$ cm$$^{2}$$/s, which is 1 order of magnitude smaller than the bulk value (2.3 $$times$$ 10$$^{-5}$$ cm$$^{2}$$/s. The MD trajectories also showed that the methanol diffusion was limited by the resin network, consistent with QENS results in terms of the diffusion coefficient and diffusion-like behavior.

Effects of magnetic field and pressure on the Kondo-like behavior in the valence-fluctuating antiferromagnetic compound EuPt$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ were studied using single-crystalline samples. The metamagnetic transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic state in UIrGe has been studied at various temperatures by magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetocaloric effect measurements on a single crystal in static and pulsed magnetic fields applied along the orthorhombic $$b$$ axis. The first-order transition is accompanied by a dramatic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient. A tentative scenario explaining these anomalies by antiferromagnetic correlations or short-range order in the paramagnetic state is discussed.


High stereographic resolution texture and residual stress evaluation using time-of-flight neutron diffraction

Neutron diffraction texture measurements provide bulk textures with excellent grain statistics even for large grained materials, together with the crystallographic parameters and microstructure information such as phase fractions, coherent crystallite size, root mean square microstrain, macroscopic/intergranular stress/strain. The procedure for high stereographic resolution texture and residual stress evaluation was established at the TAKUMI engineering materials diffractometer. The pole figure evaluation of a limestone standard sample with a trigonal crystal structure suggested that the obtained precision for texture measurement is comparable with the oversea well-established neutron beam lines utilized for texture measurements. A high strength martensite-austenite multilayered steel was employed for further verification of the reliability of simultaneous Rietveld analysis of multiphase textures and macro stress tensors. By using a geometric mean micro-mechanical model, the macro stress tensor analysis with a plane stress assumption showed a RD-TD in-plane compressive stress (about -330 MPa) in martensite layers and a RD-TD in-plane tensile stress (about 320 MPa) in austenite layers. The phase stress partitioning was ascribed to the additive effect of volume expansion during martensite transformation and the linear contraction misfit during water quenching.
