High linear energy transfer (LET) charged particle radiation such as $$^{12}$$C-ion beams,$$^{20}$$Ne-ion beams and $$^{40}$$Ar-ion beams is a new modality for the treatment of X-ray resistant cancers. Here we investigated the radiation-induced bystander effect on human glioblastoma cells using a CGNH-89 cell line. We irradiated individual charged-particles to target cells by a microbeam from cyclotron at JAEA Takasaki, and monitored DNA double strand breaks by $$gamma$$H2A. X as a marker. We found bystander responses were induced in the neighboring non-irradiated cells. These results explained marked cytotoxity of heavy ions on human glioma cells.
