Crystallography of ausformed nanobainite

"Nanobainites" with the microstructure consisting of nano-sized lamellar bainitic ferrite and carbon-enriched retained austenite, exhibited a very strong tensile strength of 2.3 GPa and toughness of 30 MPa m$$^{1/2}$$. The nanobainite transformation was found to be extremely accelerated by ausforming at a low temperature between 773 K to 523 K. However, the mechanism of bainite transformation effected by ausforming was still unclear. In the present work, EBSD and 3-D visualization were employed to investigate the crystallography and morphology of ausformed nanobainite. The active slip systems and variant selection of the Nishiyama-Wassermann (N-W) relationship are discussed.
