The smooth Teflon surface becomes rough by a keV ion beam irradiation. At a high fluence, needle-like protrusions were thickly formed all over the surface. In this study, it was revealed that the ion energy was limited in order to make the dense protrusions. In the lower energy less than 60 keV, convex folds and elevations were formed at the surface of the sample by the fluenece of 1$$times$$10$$^{17}$$ ions/cm$$^{2}$$. On the other hand, in the higher energy over 350 keV, the density of the protrusions extremely decreased and the surface became flat. That main reason is that the ion energy affected both the temperature rise of the sample and the amount of the main chain scission.
