Simulation studies and measurements of beam instabilities caused by the kicker impedance at high intensities in the 3-GeV RCS of J-PARC

The kicker impedance in the 3-GeV RCS is a strong beam instability source, especially at high intensity, where no practical measures to reduce the impedance itself has not yet been implemented. In the present research realistic beam simulations and measurement studies are performed in order to study such beam instability and its mitigation to realize the designed 1 MW beam power. Based on systematic intensity dependence beam instability studies, realistic parameters are determined for a complete suppression of the beam instability at 1 MW. The simulation results are well reproduced in the measurements and 1 MW beam acceleration has also been successfully accomplished.
