Mn$$_{2}$$VAl Heusler alloy films were epitaxially grown on MgO(100) single-crystal substrates by ultra-high-vacuum magnetron sputtering. A2- and L21-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl order was controlled by the deposition temperature. A2-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl films showed no spontaneous magnetization, while L21-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl films showed ferrimagnetic behaviour with a maximum saturation magnetization of 220 emu/cm$$^{3}$$ at room temperature (RT). An antiferromagnetic reflection was observed with neutron diffraction at RT for an A2-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl film deposited at 400$$^{circ}$$C. A bilayer sample of the antiferromagnetic A2-type Mn$$_{2}$$VAl and Fe showed an exchange bias of 120 Oe at 10 K.


Laser micro-processing as a tool for constructing insulator-based magnonic crystal

Y$$_{3}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$ (YIG) films with a periodic-antidot-array structure fabricated by laser microprocessing is shown to exhibit clear characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) magnonic crystals. The experimental results demonstrate that the spin-wave-resonance spectra in the YIG films are modulated by the periodic antidot structure. The frequency and lattice constant dependences of the spectra are well reproduced by a numerical calculation based on magnonic band structures of the 2D magnonic crystals. Since the laser micro-processing is compatible with various thin-film fabrication methods, it can be a powerful tool for constructing magnonic crystals.

The longitudinal spin-Seebeck effect (LSSE) has been investigated for Pt/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayer systems. The magnitude of the voltage induced by the LSSE is found to be sensitive to the Pt/YIG interface condition. We observed large LSSE voltage in a Pt/YIG system with a better crystalline interface, while the voltage decays steeply when an amorphous layer is introduced at the interface artificially.

We carried out a concerted effort to determine the absolute sign of the inverse spin Hall effect voltage generated by spin currents injected into a normal metal. We focus on yttrium iron garnet (YIG)|platinum bilayers at room temperature, generating spin currents by microwaves and temperature gradients. We find consistent results for different samples and measurement setups that agree with theory. We suggest a right-hand-rule to define a positive spin Hall angle corresponding to the voltage expected for the simple case of scattering of free electrons from repulsive Coulomb charges.


Capacitance transient study of a bistable deep level in e$$^{-}$$-Irradiated n-type 4H-SiC

A bistable center, named FB center, in electron irradiated 4H-SiC was observed using capacitance transient techniques. In configuration called "$$A$$", the deep level known as EH5 ($$E$$$$_{a}$$ = $$E$$$$_{C}$$ - 1.07 eV) is detected in the deep level transient spectroscopy spectrum, whereas for configuration called "$$B$$", no obvious deep level is observed in the accessible part of the band gap. Isochronal annealing revealed that the transition temperatures to be from $$A$$ to $$B$$ is more than 730K, and for the opposite process from $$B$$ to $$A$$ is about 710 K. The energy needed to conduct the transformations were determined to be $$E$$$$_{A}$$($$A$$ to $$B$$) = (2.1 $$pm$$ 0.1) eV and $$E$$$$_{A}$$($$B$$ to $$A$$) = (2.3 $$pm$$ 0.1) eV, respectively. Since the bistable FB centre is already present after low-energy electron irradiation (200 keV), it is likely related to carbon.

Three dimensional simulations and experimental results for the laser induced breakdown of air are presented. The simulations include the laser propagation, multi-photon and impact ionization, and heating of the electrons using accurate atomic and molecular data. For laser pulses of duration from 100 femto-seconds to 1 nano-second mechanisms for the breakdown of air based on the pulse duration and intensity ranging from optical field ionization to electron impact ionization are found. The laser energies at which the breakdown occurs are found to be in good agreement with experimental results.

Si(100)基板に150keV $$^{12}$$C$$^{+}$$イオンを、低温で9.0$$times$$10$$^{17}$$/cm$$^{2}$$まで注入して非晶質なSi+C層を形成後、熱処理による固相結晶成長過程を、X線回折法、フーリエ赤外分光法によって調べた。その結果、以下の結論を得た。(1)化学量論比を考慮してイオン注入を行うことにより、Si中で、結晶性の$$beta$$-SiCを形成できる。(2)固相結晶成長させる場合、大量イオン注入の条件下でも、基板を非晶質状態に保つことが重要で、その後の熱処理過程に影響を与える。
