Development of technologies to investigate properties of deep geological environment and model development of geological environment have been pursued in "Geoscientific Research" in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (Horonobe URL) project. A geochemical model which is a part of geological environment model requires the data of groundwater chemistry around the Horonobe URL for the development. This report summarizes the data obtained for 3 years from the fiscal year 2017 to 2019, especially for the results for measurement of physico-chemical parameters and analysis of groundwater chemistry, in the Horonobe URL project.

As part of the research and development program on geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste (HLW), the Horonobe Underground Research Center, a division of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), is implementing the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project (Horonobe URL Project) with the aim at investigating sedimentary rock formations. According to the research plan described in the 3rd Mid- and Long-term Plan of JAEA, according to the Horonobe URL Project, "Near-field performance study", "Demonstration of repository design option", and "Verification of crustal-movement buffering capacity of sedimentary rocks" are the top priority issues, and schedule for finishing the project and backfill plan will be decides by the end of 2019 Fiscal Year. The Horonobe URL Project is planned to extend over a period of about 20 years. This report summarizes the investigation program for the 2018 fiscal year (2018/2019).

The Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) has been conducting a wide range of geoscientific research in order to build a firm scientific and technological basis for the research and development of geological disposal. One of the major components of the ongoing geoscientific research programme is the Regional Hydrogeological Study (RHS) project in the Tono region, central Japan. The main goal of the RHS project is to develop and demonstrate surface-based investigation methodologies to characterize geological environments at a regional scale in Japan. The RHS project was initiated in 1992. The first five years of the project were devoted mainly to develop methodologies and techniques for deep borehole investigations in crystalline rock in Japan. Investigations to verify the performance of new instruments and methods for borehole drilling, hydraulic testing and groundwater sampling were conducted. In the last four years, surface-based investigations and a stepwise development of models of the geological environment have been carried out. To date, remote sensing, geological mapping, airborne and ground geophysical investigations, and measurements in eleven deep boreholes have been carried out. Hydro monitorring is continuing in these boreholes. Important results that have been obtained from these investigations include multi-disciplinaly information about the heterogeneity of lithology and hydraulic, geochemical and rock mechanical properties of the granitic rock, and evolution of the groundwater geochemistry. Technical knowledge and experience have been accumulated, which allow application of the methodologies and techniques to characterize the geological environment in crystalline rock. The results from these R%D activities were used as prime inputs for the H12 report that JNC submitted to the Japanese Government in l999. The Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory Project (MIU Project) is being pursued by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency to enhance the reliability of geological disposal technologies through investigations of the deep geological environment in the crystalline host rock at Mizunami City, Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. On the occasion of the reform of the entire JAEA organization in 2014, JAEA identified three important remaining issues on the geoscientific research program based on the synthesized latest results of research and development: Development of countermeasure technologies for reducing groundwater inflow, Development of modeling technologies for mass transport and Development of drift backfilling technology. The research and development of three remaining important issues have been carrying out in the MIU Project. The achievement and future plan of the MIU Project are summarized in this presentation.
