Experimental investigation of decontamination factor dependence on aerosol concentration in pool scrubbing

Because a pool scrubbing is important for reducing radioactive aerosols to the environment for a nuclear reactor in a severe accident situation, many researches have been performed. However, decontamination factor (DF) dependence on aerosol concentration was seldom considered. DF dependence in the pool scrubbing with 2.4 m water submergence was investigated by light scattering aerosol spectrometers. It was observed that DF increased monotonically as decreasing particle number concentration in a constant thermohydraulic condition. Two validation experiments were conducted to confirm the observed DF dependence. In addition, characteristics of the DF dependence in different water submergences were investigated experimentally. It was found the DF dependence became more significant in higher water submergence.

Mechanical strategies for remediating radiocesium contaminated soils, e.g. at farms, schoolyards, gardens or parks, lower air dose rates in one of two characteristic ways. The first is to physically remove radiocesium from the environment, for example by stripping topsoil and sending it for disposal. The second is to redistribute the radiocesium deeper within the ground, e.g. by mixing the topsoil or switching the positions of different soil layers, in order that soil attenuates radiocesium gamma rays before they reach the surface. The amount that air dose rates reduce because of remediation can be calculated using radiation transport methods. This chapter summarizes modelling results for the effect of topsoil removal (with and without recovering with a clean soil layer), topsoil mixing, and soil layer interchange on dose rates. Using measurements of the depth profile of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs activity in soil at un-remediated sites across North East Japan, the potential effectiveness of remediation work was estimated considering remediation to different soil depths and different time lags after the accident. The results show that remediation performance would have been essentially constant irrespective of the time at which it was undertaken in the initial five year period following the fallout.

原子力機構は、茨城大学, 熊谷組およびグループ会社であるテクノスとともに、森林からのセシウムの移行を抑制する新技術を開発した。この新技術では、ポリイオンと呼ばれるイオン性高分子と鉱物である粘土を併用し、降雨や雨水の流れといった自然の力を利用して、セシウムの移行を抑制する。福島県飯舘村で新規技術の実証試験を行い、森林から森林に隣接する牧草地へのセシウム移行に対する抑制効果を証明した。

Measurement of radioactive contamination on work clothing of workers engaged in decontamination operations

To rationally judge the necessity of the contamination screening measurements required in the decontamination work regulations, a field study of the surface contamination density on the clothing of the workers engaged in decontamination operations was performed. The clothing and footwear of 20 workers was analyzed by high-purity germanium (HPGe) $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy. The maximum radiocesium activities ($$^{134}$$Cs + $$^{137}$$Cs) observed were 3600, 1300, and 2100 Bq for the work clothing, gloves, and boots, respectively, and the derived surface contamination densities were below the regulatory limit of 40 Bq/cm$$^{2}$$. The results of this field study suggest that the upper bounds of the surface contamination density on the work clothing, gloves, and boots are predictable from the maximum soil loading density on the surface of clothing and footwear and the radioactivity concentration in soil at the site.

The Volume reduction method of radioactively-contaminated plant waste through extraction and removal of radioactive cesium

After Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accidents, a lot of contaminated wastes have been produced by decontamination works at contaminated areas around Fukushima prefecture, Japan. At some temporary storage sites, it was found that contaminated leaching water was accumulated under stacks of contaminated "plant" wastes. To handle the wastes and the solution properly, decontamination tests of the leaching water were examined with molybdophosphate type cesium adsorbents synthesized by radiation-induced grafting method. At batch adsorption tests, 75% of radioactive cesium was successfully removed with cesium adsorbents. At column adsorption tests, radioactivity concentration of the leaching water could be reduced under provisional limit value up to around 500 times volume as large as an adsorbent volume. For development of volume reduction method of contaminated plant wastes, radioactive cesium extraction tests from the wastes and removal tests from the extracts were executed using contaminated oil cakes of sunflower seeds as a model of contaminated plant wastes. As a result, 65% of radioactive cesium was successfully extracted from the oil cakes to liquid phase, and more than 65% of radioactive cesium could be collected from the extract by grafted cesium adsorbents. These results showed a possibility of an application of these processes to volume reduction method for contaminated plant wastes.


Estimation of the cesium concentration in spent zeolite vessels

Zeolite is used for adsorption of cesium in the treatment system for contaminated water generated at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Spent zeolite enclosed in stainless steel vessels needs to be stored for a long term; therefore, the hydrogen production by radiolysis of water and corrosion of the vessel under zeolite coexistence needs to be clarified for the safe storage of spent zeolite. The kinetics of cesium adsorption on herschelite, which is used as a zeolite-like adsorbent at the Fukushima site, was investigated to estimate the cesium concentration in spent zeolite vessels. The distribution of cesium in the bed depends on the salt concentration of the feed solution. A simulation code was developed to calculate both the concentration and distribution of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs in spent vessels, and the results of calculations were in good agreement with those of experiments.
