In order to reduce the influence on a plant schedule of the MONJU by the maintenance of dew point hygrometers, The JAEA examined a capacitance type dew point hygrometer as an alternative dew point hygrometer for a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer which had been used at the CV-LRT in the MONJU. As a result of comparing a capacitance type dew point hygrometer with a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer at the CV-LRT (Atmosphere: nitrogen, Testing time: 24 hours), there weren't significant difference between a capacitance type dew point hygrometer and a lithium-chloride type dew point hygrometer. As a result of comparing a capacitance dew point hygrometer with a high-mirror-surface type dew point hygrometer for long term verification (Atmosphere: air, Testing time: 24 months), the JAEA confirmed that a capacitance type dew point hygrometer satisfied the instrument specification ($$pm$$2.04$$^{circ}$$C) required by the JEAC4203-2008.

The power distribution and core characteristics in various configurations of fuel subassemblies with an innerduct structure in the Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor were evaluated using a Monte Carlo code for neutron transport and burnup calculation. The correlation between the fraction of fuel subassemblies facing outward and the degree of power increase at the core center was observed regardless of the compositions. This indicated that the spatial fissile distribution caused by innerduct configurations was the major factor of the difference in the power distribution. A power increase was also found in an off-center region, and it tended to be greater than that at the core center because of the steep gradient of neutron flux intensity. The differences in the worth of control rods caused by innerduct configurations were confirmed.

Improvement of transient analysis method of a sodium-cooled fast reactor with FAIDUS fuel sub-assemblies

In order to evaluate transient behavior of Japan sodium-cooled fast reactor (JSFR) with fuel sub-assemblies with the innerduct structure (FAIDUS) precisely, a new model for a plant dynamics code HIPRAC was developed. In this new model, inner core and outer core channels can be divided into three channels, respectively, such as interior, edge and near innerduct channel, and calculate coolant redistribution and coolant temperature in each channel. Coolant temperature distribution of interior and edge channels calculated by this model was compared with previous study by the general-purpose thermal-hydraulics code $$alpha$$-FLOW. Coolant temperature behavior inside the innerduct was analyzed by a commercial thermal hydraulics code STAR-CD ver. 3.26. Based on this result, horizontally-uniformed coolant temperature in the innerduct was assumed as a heat transfer model of the innderduct. Reactivity coefficients for 750 MWe JSFR with low -decontaminated transuranic (TRU) fuel were evaluated. Transient behaviors of an unprotected loss-of-flow (ULOF) accident for JSFR with 750 MWe output calculated by previous and new models were compared. The results showed that the detailed evaluation of coolant temperature improved overestimation of the coolant temperature and coolant temperature feedback reactivity of the peripheral channels including coolant inside the innerduct and in the inter-wrapper gap.

This paper presents the typical characteristics of sodium combustion and subsequent reaction heat transfer behaviors observed and investigated in sodium columnar leak and fire experiment which was conducted in an enclosed steel vessel with large inner volume of about 100 m$$^{3}$$. Especially the experiment was carried out with the main focus on the burning phenomenon within a limited spatial area in the case of large sodium leak rate as well as on the multi-dimensional thermal-hydraulics both near a sodium burning zone and in a whole region in the vessel. The investigated experimental results show us that the sodium combustion of columnar leak and its splashed droplets would lead to important oxygen deficiency behavior near the burning region, and be followed by the limitation or saturation of maximum sodium burning rate.

The research on Innovative Water Reactor for Flexible fuel cycle (FLWR) has been performed in JAERI for the development of future innovative reactors. The workshop on the FLWRs has been held every year since 1998 aiming at information exchange between JAERI and other organizations. The 8th workshop was held on Feb. 10, 2005 under the joint auspices of JAERI and North Kanto and Kanto-Koetsu branches of Atomic Energy Society of Japan with 75 participants. The workshop began with 3 presentations on FLWRs entitled "Framework and Status of Research and Development on FLWRs", "Long-Term Fuel Cycle Scenarios for Advanced Utilization of Plutonium from LWRs", and "Experiments on Characteristics on Hydrodynamics in Tight-Lattice Core". Then 3 lectures followed: "Development of Evaluation Method for Accuracy in Predicting Neutronics Characteristics of Tight-Lattice Core" by Osaka University, "Development of Cost-Reduced Low-Moderation Spectrum Boiling Water Reactor" by Toshiba Corporation and "Design and Analysis on Super-Critical Water Cooled Power Reactors" by Tokyo University.

The present report contains the achievement of "Research and Development on Reduced-Moderation Light Water Reactor with Passive Safety Features", which was performed by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), Hitachi Ltd., Japan Atomic Power Company and Tokyo Institute of Technology in FY2000-2002 as the innovative and viable nuclear energy technology (IVNET) development project operated by the Institute of Applied Energy (IAE). In the present project, the reduced-moderation water reactor (RMWR) has been developed to ensure sustainable energy supply and to solve the recent problems of nuclear power and nuclear fuel cycle, such as economical competitiveness, effective use of plutonium and reduction of spent fuel storage. The RMWR can attain the favorable characteristics such as high burnup, long operation cycle, multiple recycling of plutonium (Pu) and effective utilization of uranium resources based on accumulated LWR technologies.

Measurement of $$^{238}$$U Doppler Effect using various samples in FCA XVII-1

$$^{238}$$U Doppler effect measurements were carried out using 6 uranium samples with various composition or diameter varying self-shielding factors of $$^{238}$$U. Calculation accuracy of the standard analysis method for fast reactor cores at FCA was investigated.The Doppler effect were measured by the sample-heated and reactivity worth measurement method up to 800 degree in the FCA XVII-1 assembly, which simulated Na-cooled MOX fueled FBR. In the analysis, the Doppler effect was calculated using the effective cross sections obtained by the PEACO-X code. The calculated values based on the diffusion theory agreed well with the experiment for the U-metal and UO$$_{2}$$ samples. The calculation underestimated the experiment from 10% to 30% for the UO$$_{2}$$ samples containing BeO. This underestimation was improved by the use of the transport calculation. The calculation, however, underestimated about 20% for the sample whose background cross section is greater than 300 barns.
