Contents of $$^{107}$$Pd in a spent nuclear fuel sample was determined with laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). With its long half-life of 6.5$$times$$10$$^{6}$$ years, the accurate determination of the amount of $$^{107}$$Pd in spent nuclear fuel is essential for evaluating long-term radiation effects to the environment after the disposal. Pd in spent nuclear fuel solution was separated by precipitation triggered by photoreduction of Pd(II) with pulsed laser irradiation. The laser operation conditions of LA were optimized using a non-radioactive Pd precipitate prepared following the same procedure with a simulated spent nuclear fuel solution including a $$^{105}$$Pd -enriched stable isotope standard. The results obtained through direct measurement with LA-ICP-MS agreed well with those obtained in conventional solution nebulization mode which requires dissolution of the precipitate.
